OVERVIEW

Revolutionary low-volume cymbals your neighbors will appreciate.

As a leader in cymbal making, Zildjian is always looking for new and innovative ways to bring a better musical experience to the drumming community. One area where drummers commonly express difficulty is lowering or dampening cymbal volume for practice and smaller gigs, or for the sake of close or sensitive neighbors. To really practice, it’s best to just play as you normally would, rather than ease up to cut volume. Zildjian has come up with an ideal solution—the Low Volume Family of cymbals.

Through tireless research and development, a specialized pattern was achieved to deliver the best of both worlds: musicality and lower volume. This innovative pattern is combined with a special proprietary alloy with a unique matte finish that enables the Low Volume cymbal to have fewer high frequencies and is up to 80% quieter than a traditional cymbal.

Comments about Zildjian L80 Series LV468 Low Volume Cymbal Box Set:

I use an electronic kit for practice to keep the neighbors from complaining about noise. One of the things I've always hated about e-kits are the cymbals and hats. They just don't sound or respond like real cymbals do. My intention in buying the L80 cymbals was to replace the "e-cymbals" with these. Just mic them up and mix them in with the e-drums. I've only had these for two days but I've got to say it's a success. They do exactly what I hoped they would even though they don't sound exactly like "normal" cymbals. I had to experiment with mic placement for a while to get them to sit well with the e-drums in my headphones. For me, I have the mic's close, aimed pretty much at the bell of the cymbal. Good attack and some sustain without too much overtones.

My favorites are the hats (and that was the main thing I wanted them for.) Mic'ed up properly, the hats sit well in the mix with e-drums and have all the dynamics and nuance of normal hihat cymbals. Briefly, I used normal hat cymbals with my e-kit because they just felt so much better to play, but they were too loud. These L80's solve that problem.

I can't really speak to their use in quiet gigs as advertised. They have very little sustain at all. In fact, all you really hear is the stick noise with a very subtle decay. I tried some of the Vic Firth/Steve Smith Tala wands to see if I could minimize the stick noise but it just wasn't loud enough. These cymbals feel and play exactly like normal cymbals but they don't sound like normal cymbals.

I guess my suggestion would be, if you intend to use these as quiet practice cymbals, they will be excellent. If you can play a rubber practice pad or e-kit pad loudly and not bother the neighbors, I doubt these will either. Just stick noise.

On the other hand, if you want these for playing quiet gigs or recording, I'd suggest actually trying out a set before buying to see if the sound suits you. Hope they release individual cymbals eventually like chinas/splashes/etc...

Comments about Zildjian L80 Series LV468 Low Volume Cymbal Box Set:

What I like most is that if I want to turn them into Gen 16 it's just a matter of a module and pickup. Even though there quiet they still have a great acoustical sound.

        Pros

        • More realistic than electronic rubber cymbals
        • Much quieter than regular cymbals

Comments about Zildjian L80 Series LV468 Low Volume Cymbal Box Set:

These def cut sound by a lot. I can play them without hearing protection if needed. And it's possible to have a conversation with a student while they are being played. They feel very close to real cymbals although are much lighter. Be aware that this affects the feel and regular cymbals will feel heavier after using these. For example. the ride/crash cymbal moves a lot when I really lay into it. It took me a bit of time to adjust. Overall, they do exactly what they claim. Highly recommended if you are a drum teacher and/or need to practice quietly.

Does the trick. Better than the Gen16's for acoustic practice. More realistically priced. They don't have the annoying ring after being struck that the Gen's do.

Comments about Zildjian L80 Series LV468 Low Volume Cymbal Box Set:

These cymbals were an immediate great addition to my practice kit. When I got the set, I really just wanted the hihats and the ride, but I ended up really liking the 16" crash. It has a good ride sound of its own and is much nicer to crash than the 18" crash/ride.
Only two minor concerns, neither enough to merit knocking off a star. The hihats are a little trashy and brittle sounding. I tinkered around with them to improve their sound, and now they're fine. And although I like the overall look of the cymbals, the matte surface texture is fairly rough and wears down the tips of wooden drumsticks - especially maple. I mostly use nylon tip sticks with these to avoid tip wear.

Comments about Zildjian L80 Series LV468 Low Volume Cymbal Box Set:

This is an overall great cymbal. My mom loves it, and my neighbors love it. They do, however, have a very dark and almost sparkly look. Almost look like they are from recycled cymbals or something. You can also hear the stick hitting the cymbal at a loud level. If you wear headphones when you play, it should not be a problem.

Comments about Zildjian L80 Series LV468 Low Volume Cymbal Box Set:

Excellent response, high quality and does not bother the neighbors, even when playing at usual level of exertion. The tail of the crash doesn't linger quite as long as a regular cymbal, but the sound is great, and allows a full practice/rehearsal without having to shout or wear earplugs. Would be perfect for giving lessons, too!

Where have these been all my life. With the use of these and Aquarian super pads I can now practice anytime I want. The combo of the L80s with the pads is as close as you can get to the feel of my real drum heads and cymbals, but with 80% less volume. Perfect for it's intended use.

Very quiet product with great feel compared to rubber cymbals. The lightness of the hihat makes the pedal respond somewhat differently. A great solution to an age old problem that is very cost effective.
