About Fender Telecaster Guitars

The iconic Fender Telecaster electric guitar is a masterpiece of design and functionality. It was the first commercially successful solid body electric guitar. No other electric guitar captures the Fender Tele’s simplicity, elegance, reliability and versatility.

Musician's Friend carries the complete Fender Tele assortment. Current models include Fender Player Telecaster guitars, which launched in 2018. It replaced one of the most popular guitar models of all time, the Fender Standard Telecaster. The Made in Mexico Player Series Telecaster is among Fender's most affordable guitars.

The Fender Telecaster’s release in the early 1950s changed the course of modern music. It continues to be a best seller to this day. New Fender Telecaster electric guitars use the same basic design. You’ll find several variations on its basic theme here at Musician’s Friend. Those include Fender Tele’s with single coil pickups, humbucking pickups, and combinations of the two.

Hollow body electric guitars existed for years before the Fender Tele's introduction. A few guitar builders experimented with solid body electrics. But, it wasn't until Leo Fender unveiled the Telecaster that the solid body electric guitar really took off. Leo Fender developed the Telecaster at his workshop in Fullerton, California.

The earliest version of the Fender Tele was the single-pickup Esquire, released in 1950. A two-pickup version, christened the Broadcaster, replaced the Esquire several months later. The Fender Broadcaster name quickly drew a trademark complaint from Gretsch. At the time, Gretsch marketed a line of drums under the name Broadkaster. Experts estimate that roughly 500 Nocaster guitars were produced. Fender trademarked Nocaster for use with replicas of the originals.

Fender removed the Broadcaster name from the headstock design. Several months passed without a replacement name on the headstock. Players later dubbed these nameless, highly collectible guitars as Nocasters. Fender finally adopted the name Telecaster, inspired by the television.

The Esquire returned as a single-pickup version of the Fender Tele. The now-familiar two-pickup model quickly caught on with country pickers, blues and rock players. It eventually caught on with pickers in virtually every genre from jazz and punk to psychedelia and beyond.

Today, the Fender Tele is available in an incredible array of models. There are lefty versions of most series available. Check out Fender Artist Series Telecaster guitars. You’ll also find all the parts and accessories you might need to complete or create your dream Fender Tele. You can even replace your neck and body, or custom-build your own guitar from scratch.
