Comments about Dean Backwoods 2 Acoustic-Electric 5-String Banjo:

My husband wanted to learn banjo, so I bought him a used version of this. It said that it needed repair, but when we got it, we didn't notice anything wrong with it, except bad strings. Easy fix. Taking it to guitar center to have it looked over just to be sure. Very happy with the quality and appearance of this banjo! Would definitely buy from musicians friend again!!!

Comments about Dean Backwoods 2 Acoustic-Electric 5-String Banjo:

Bought this banjo as the price was right and I really like the look of it. Upon receiving it I noticed that the 5th string tuning peg just kept rotating in place meaning it could never be tuned. I re boxed it up and shipped it back. MF were very nice and professional. They shipped me back a replacement and it was in perfect shape. I am very happy with the banjo and the customer support. The acoustic sound is a tad tinny (lacking bass) but when plugged in this banjo really shines. A solid workhorse and a good deal.

Comments about Dean Backwoods 2 Acoustic-Electric 5-String Banjo:

Not a professional instrument. The pick-up is weak and has a vary thin tone. When playing with out amplification, there is no where near the acoustic volume of other banjos. Be careful when adjusting the neck. It's very flimsy.

Comments about Dean Backwoods 2 Acoustic-Electric 5-String Banjo:

I will have to get back to you. I very much dislike initial, out of the box reviews. But for now, my only real concern is the narrow neck. I began on a Rogue B-30, which for a cheap, off brand beginning instrument was made very well and is my favorite non-guitar instrument. But even the B-30 is listed as having a wider neck at the peghead. I have trouble down here with my fat fingers. So basically, if I have the same or worse problem with the Dean BW2-5, then I have spent good money for something I cannot use. Couple things you need to know. A great banjo if you can make your fingers work. Seems to be great quality. Neck is a bit thin overall. On new instruments, Banjos do not come with the bridge in place - too easily damaged in transit. It's simple, look it up online and you can easily do it yourself. Before you do, you might also consider a new set of strings. Most guitars shipped by most instrument sellers come with terrible strings - banjos are no difference. Set up your bridge and get a good set of strings, and I think you will be happy with this instriment. It looks awesome. (PS. If you measure the distance from the nut to the 12th fret, this will be the starting position to measure from the 12th fret to the placement of the bridge - then check your harmonics.

Comments about Dean Backwoods 2 Acoustic-Electric 5-String Banjo:

I play in a bluegrass/folk punk band. When I decided to switch from guitar and pick up the banjo, I chose the backwoods mostly because of the pre-installed pickup. The problem is that anyone with the ear of of a performance level musician will probably not be happy with the tone or playability of this instrument making a pickup kind of pointless. Its very tinny even for a banjo. Also, the 1 inch neck is hard for my stubby fingers to make chords without muting the other strings. I have since aquired a gold tone ob250 with a wider neck and the difference is amazing. I would probably recommend this banjo as a starter instrument for a child/ teen with smaller hands just to see if they'll stick with it. But buy it with the knowledge that once their ear and technique develops, they will out grow it and you will need to upgrade. If you're sure you're going to keep playing or if you already play, I would keep looking.

          Service and delivery comments:

Plan on a trip to the guitar shop to get it set up once it arives. It was delivered with the bridge uninstalled and the head completely out of tune.
