I"ve had thisHonher model since the early 70's. Had tried using other harmoincas without success by myself... just didn't make sense..gave them away UNTIL I bought this model with a professional neckholder: FIRST day I was able to use it playing melody on four songs while accompanying myself on guitar...it all made sense. Used it to play solo gigs, with bands in small and large venues. Opened up a whole new world for me. Used it many times to tune my guitar. BOB DYLAN and NEIL YOUNG were major influences on me... because of them I bought this harmonica...don't really need the 64 octave..the smaller one works well. the sound is just amazing..especially when played thru a professional PA system. Crowds love it. I don't play it alone.. only while playing guitar... but others can pick it up and use it alone to accompany a band..rock, folk, Christian. if you want to play an instrument..this is it. Actually, I learned how to sing many songs by using the harmonica with guitar for the melody first... helped me to find my voice 'key' on certain songs. buy one, or the smaller model.. and sit down with some other musicans..play along. I've shown 8 year olds how to play successfully while I played guitar. Can't say enough... except COST... it's worth it, but for many musicians it's a little expense on a tight budget If it was less expensive i'd buy another one today. large or smaller one. *adds a lot to eagles songs, neil young songs, etc. buy one, try it, come away smiling.

What happened to quality control? First harp had multiple non sounding and out of tune notes, can't play octave west coast style if your octaves are different pitches. Second one inconsistent again in the registers and a slider that stuck like mud. Do we really have to pay twice as much for a decent 64?
I will say that the notes that were in tune had that sweet brass reed sound.

I sent 2 back; 3rd one seems to work

Comments about Hohner 280/64 Chromonica 64 Chromatic Harmonica:

The first 280/64 I received had one reed/note that would not play (and I tried everything). I sent it back; new one arrived. How happy I was until I discovered the screw, that holds slide in place, was missing. Sent THAT one back. I have received a 3rd one which seems to be working. It does sound gorgeous (although one low reed has a slight buzz).
I would recommend this model to a friend but only after warning him to watch for occasional shoddy work that must have been done at factory.

64chromonica..a musical wonder

By murf3622

Comments about Hohner 280/64 Chromonica 64 Chromatic Harmonica:

I have owned and played a 64 chromonica for several years along with several other hohners. It is, in my opinion, the best harmonica I have ever played. I hope others will enjoy it as much as I have.

    Super 64

    By eddie kibbee

    from albuquerque, NM

Comments about Hohner 280/64 Chromonica 64 Chromatic Harmonica:

The super 64 chromatic is an essential part of any harmonica players inventory. With a mic & amp it's amazing the sound that can be produced ... just plain fun. On the down side, the paper/plastic buffer reeds go out frequently and require maintenance. This harp has a big thumbs up from me.

Comments about Hohner 280/64 Chromonica 64 Chromatic Harmonica:

This is the classic of professional harmonicas. This is a true musical instrument and is not a toy. The 280 Super is for the serious musician who does not want to be limited by set scales or octaves.

    Have Some Bucks To Spare?

    By MusicalRides

    from Houston, TX

Comments about Hohner 280/64 Chromonica 64 Chromatic Harmonica:

This is what you need for Lennon's harmonica riff on "I Should Have Known Better". Quite beyond the typical blues harp price range, but essential for that on-the-money early Beatles sound. Schweeeet. After that easy-peasy song, you will find plenty other tunes - don't forget the larger 7 & 1/2 inch holder if your hands are gonna be busy on the keyboards or strings.

Comments about Hohner 280/64 Chromonica 64 Chromatic Harmonica:

Actually my first time to handle a chromatic harmonica so I can't say I have much experience with it and also no comparation with other brands, but for me, it works well with no difficulty in both low and high region notes. I really like the rich tone of the first several notes. That's great!

And one thing I want to mention is that for the last week, I noticed the windsaver is a little bent over so it's not contacted closely with the groove. Guess it's because the way I play it is not correct or because of the temperature/weather...definitely it does not have this problem when shipped to me.

I am a musician of fifty years. I am blessed to play several instruments on a regular basis in a church worship band. My church likes my harmonicas a little better than the other instruments because our group is built from a group of ex-country players. We have guitars, bass, drums, keyboard, mandolin, viola, etc. all from experienced players. Because of the quality of this 280/64 in all facets, I will anxiously wait for every opportunity I have to play this fabulous instrument!

Instrument has wonderful range and a great sound. Still learning the instrument and it gives plenty of space to grow. Playing "simple" Bach pieces (like Minuet in G) from Anna Magdalena's Song Book. What a prospective buyer needs to know is that the slide should be lubricated with WATER (only!) before and after each session. Just dip a matchstick with a drop of water into each hole. Doing that keeps the slider from freezing when not in use. Recommend distilled water to avoid the calcium. This seems to be a chronic problem with chromatics, at least from what I read.

Requires greater volume of air than the two octave 50 year old Chromonica I have played many years. That makes it more difficult to sustain notes that require drawing air (rather than blowing) like A,B,D and F on a C instrument. And it will take time to play the highest octave with confidence. Overall, a fine choice.
