the 542/20 Golden Melody Hohner is an especially airtight harmonica with a strong, full-bodied sound. The curved ends provide extra holding comfort, and it's ideal for overblowing. Get the one virtuoso Howard Levy prefers. Curved cover plates extend the entire length of the harmonica, providing increased resonant capacity. Reeds are set close to the open-framed mouthpiece and respond to the most subtle of commands, making the Golden Melody perfect for overblowing as well as bending.

I recently received 7 Golden Melody harmonicas and they are truly wonderful. I have always used mostly Marine Band and the odd Blues Harp but I now find the wood combs are not as much to my liking as it used to be. Don't get me wrong, these are great harmonicas however I now like the feel of plastic combs. Before the Golden Melody I bought some Hohner Special 20's, which have plastic combs and I do like them however I now find the Golden Melody feels even much better not only to hold due to the rounded edges but also for easier bending. The sound seems more crisp and more full bodied, probably due to the reeds which are set closer to the mouthpiece then other models. Another reason I like these are the tuning, true perfect A440 pitch. Esthetically they are a cool looking harmonica with their trademark red plastic combs and rounded edges, which make them stand out to all others. I mainly play Chicago Blues style, I would say these harmonicas would handle most other styles of playing as well. Give it a try! I wish I would have a long time ago. In fact I like these so much I have just ordered another set, this time a full set of 12.Cheers.

Nice tone, sharp reed plates, ouch!

Sweeter tone than Lee Oscar, but, Lee Oscar takes alot less wind!! Sharp reed plate extends too far beyond comb, it's hard on the lips!

Stick with the higher keys

Comments about Hohner 542/20 Golden Melody Harmonica:

I own 3 of these harps: E, D, and A. The E and D are my go-to harps when I'm playing a gig and want to bust out an acapella blues jam. They are smooth, responsive, and bend like butter. Best harps I've ever played. My key of A GM stays in the box as a practice harp, however, and I play my Special 20 A-harp at gigs. The Golden Melody doesn't seem to have enough "oomph" in the lower notes. If I had my harp set to do all over again, I'd get the GM for everything C and above, then go with Big River or Special 20 for anything below C. This harp wants to sing tenor, not baritone.

Comments about Hohner 542/20 Golden Melody Harmonica:

Great resonance. Good volume on the draw notes. Best harp for both single bends and double bends that I've ever had. If you're just taking up blues harp and have been getting discouraged about your ability to bend notes--don't give up until you've tried a Golden Melody!!!

Good For Single Note Action

Comments about Hohner 542/20 Golden Melody Harmonica:

This is a great Harp if you can pull off Overblows and Overdraws and like to play Single Noted stuff, but you will not like this for Chord and Rhythm Playing. It is tuned to Equal Temperament which makes the Chords Sound Harp. A Good Harmonica for Rhythm Playing is the Special 20 or The Marine Band.

If it is good enough for the greats, it is good enough for me. Also, it plays SOOOO well, bending is pretty easy on this harp.

I like it, it is expensive for what it is but I like it... I will probably continue to buy Lee Oskars though.

Comments about Hohner 542/20 Golden Melody Harmonica:

This is a great sounding harp. I have one of these and a big river band. In my own opinion, I think the golden melody is a better harp for rhythm than for lead licks, but it is still a great harp for the price. I would recomend this harp to beginners due to it's ease of play.

This harp sounds great, it's comfortable to grip, and it is priced right. It is tight and it doesn't catch my whiskers as much as other harps. I'd recommend this harp highly.

Comments about Hohner 542/20 Golden Melody Harmonica:

I started with a Piedmont Blues, then I decided to make a upgrade in my gig and I bought 4 hohner Golden Melody in C,D,E,F keys. I tryed to make many blues licks and melodies and I just can say: WOW! What a great sounding harp! At a super afordable cost. All reeds sounds sharp and clear and sings loud and proud. I ll complete the set, I ll buy the A,G and Bb right away! The best Hohner harp at a afordable cost, there's no dissapointment here. Buy a Cowboy hat, a Golden Melody and You ll be singing the blues...!

Comfort and tone

By Anonymous

Comments about Hohner 542/20 Golden Melody Harmonica:

Comfortable all around. Easy to hold, easy to blow, very responsive. The mouth holes are narrower than on a lee oskar, special 20, or pro harp. same width as a blues harp or marine band, except the comb is plasic. Best of both worlds. I converted from a set of blues harps to a set of g.m.'s after giving one a try. Loud, airtight and durable. Great quality for the right price.

Comments about Hohner 542/20 Golden Melody Harmonica:

Love the Golden Melody Harps. The most comfortable Harp I have played. I only wish they were as durable as Lee Oskar and had replaceable reed plates. Great harp for any style very responsive. Great tone.

For overall ease of holding and hand effects, this model just cannot be topped. It produces a great amplified sound to use in straight harp gospel playing.

To learn and/or perfect your overblowing (think Howard Levy), this is THE daddy (or Momma) of harps. Sweet, smooth, and a looker, too. Oh, wait, I'm describing a harp, not my wife...

BEST HARP SO FAR FOR ME

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

Comments about Hohner 542/20 Golden Melody Harmonica:

I've only been playing harp a year but 50 shows so far this year as a solo guitarist/harp...these harps are easy for beginners and sounds the best so far for me. I've tried Lee Oskar and some other higher priced...but seemed like these required more skill to play and I quickly donated all of them to the Salvation Army...I have 12 of these and am getting replacements because I play them everyday and never tend to them whatsoever...

More Blues for the BUCK!

By Bud Marshburn

from Kernersville, NC

Comments about Hohner 542/20 Golden Melody Harmonica:

One of the best Harps I've ever played. I bought one 25 years ago to quit smoking. IT WORKED! I still have it and play it, and since have bought 20+ in just about every Key. I like the A, D, C, & G the best for country and throw the Ab and E & B in for the Blues. The Frame is much more comfortable than most other models including the Blues Harp when learning, and it bends notes every bit as well. You can dismantle it for cleaning and/or reed replacement if you get really crazy and blow one out. Not to mention Hohner really stands behind their products. I own cheap ones all the way to the Meisterklasse models, and overall...I would have to rate the Golden Melody the Best Blow for the BUCK.
