Comments about Johnson FI-220 Lap Dulcimer:

For the price, this is a remarkable dulcimer; the sound is excellent as is the action (height of strings above the fretboard and the amount of pressure needed to produce a clear note). The sound is exceptionally bright and clear; the construction is very solid; the tuners are good quality and makes easy adjustments when tuning the dulcimer; the size is excellent for both a young person or full-size adult; the sound chamber produces a very loud sound and the frets are accurately positioned to play the exact note in pitch; the dulcimer is well made and the cedar fretboard adds a pleasant fragrance when playing. This dulcimer is very easy to play; I would HIGHLY recommend this instrument to anyone, including those in the experienced audience. Regardless of where it was made (in China) and the complaints about using rare woods in its construction, it is one of the best dulcimers I have played on for the price.

Comments about Johnson FI-220 Lap Dulcimer:

First time dulcimer player. Ordered the apple dulcimer and thought that was a good deal. As a strictly introductory instrument it is. However, if you plan on getting more involved with playing and jamming with others the FI-220 is a great choice. The construction is good, tone is good and it stays in tune. It is comparable to dulcimers costing somewhat more and is an excellent entry/intermediate instrument for the price. Plesantly suprised

      Excellent service, as always.

Comments about Johnson FI-220 Lap Dulcimer:

I ordered the Apple Creek dulcimer first but had to send it back because of a broken plastic tuner key. I then decided to buy a better dulcimer; this one. It is bigger, has a great tone, and metal tuning keys. It also stays in tune way better. The intonation is a little "iffy" high up on the neck on the bass string but that is the only complaint. It comes with a case too!

Comments about Johnson FI-220 Lap Dulcimer:

Bought this for my wife. She has never touched an instrument. After alot of time on the internet, and saving many good websites, she has found a fun hobby. You have to do some research on tunings. Once you understand how to tune it, you can proceed. Not hard to learn, 2 common tunings are DAA & DAD, we started with DAA, but found DAD to be more pleasing. Felt Picks work great as well, or you may be able to use your fingers to pick. The instrument itself is built pretty good. The tuners hold Great. You can spend more money on a higher quality unit, but for a beginner to learn on, this is it. Only downside is the Mfg chose not to include anything with the unit, Nothing whatsoever. Google is your best freind here. Wife is happy, so everyone is happy.

Comments about Johnson FI-220 Lap Dulcimer:

I regret buying this product. Immediately out of the box one of the doubled treble strings buzzed. This I fixed by refiling the slot groove for that string at the nut. But more alarmingly was the far-too-high action. So high that at the octave strings were more than 20 cents sharp. The good news was that at least the fret was set correctly at the octave. The problem arises from the string slots on the (non-adjustable) bridge not being grooved correctly. Fixable, but will require a bit of woodworking to adjust the action. This is all rather annoying as I had waited over half a year because the instrument was on backorder to allow the company making it to re-source (actually substitute with another) one of the woods used in its construction. I was content to wait because of the previous rave reviews. Perhaps the company also re-sourced the people doing the construction. Or maybe the design specs. In any event I hope I'll be able to salvage the instrument with a little woodworking this weekend so that it can serve as a reasonable beginner's instrument. Of course, had I know before what I know now I would have bought a different instrument.
