Distressed for a classic mandolin look, crafted for rich tone.

The Washburn M116SW A-style mandolin features a vintage look and its expert craftsmanship upholds the standards to which all Washburn instruments are made. The mandolin is built on the popular A-style platform-a classic teardrop acoustic folk design belting out full, warm tone.

It starts with a carved solid spruce top for warm, balanced tone right out of the box. The back and sides are bookmatched flamed maple, offering tremendous beauty not regularly seen in mandolins in this price range. The ebony fingerboard over the maple neck offers a warm sustain, while the A-style design keeps your attack punchy and quick-ideal for chopping away in barn-burnin' bluegrass settings.

A subtle rope purfling outlines the teardrop body, while the mandolin's distressed Allan style tailpiece and distressed stained matte finish continues the vintage look. Four inline open-gear distressed tuning machines offer precise tuning in an aged appearance.

The Washburn M116SW A-style mandolin comes out of the box looking and feeling like a family heirloom. The distressed wood and natural finish maintains a timeless folk look and sound. Includes case.

A very good mandolin for the price

Comments about Washburn M116SW A-Style Mandolin:

I had seen one of these before I ordered it and was very impressed with the "distressed" or vintage look. It really does look like something from the twenties or thirties. More impressive is the sound and playability of the M116SW. I did have to change the strings and adjust the bridge slightly but once I did, it gave a great bluegrass sound and also sounds great for fiddle tunes and the like. It plays very well with a nice feel on the neck. It is not the cheapest mando on the block but it is a pretty good one. Even the case has a nice vintage feel while being protective, and frankly, kind of neat. I'm glad I bought it.

Comments about Washburn M116SW A-Style Mandolin:

For this price, this is both an excellent looking and good quality instrument. Its tone is definitely more suited to bluegrass than other mandolin styles. Construction quality is excellent.

My personal instrument required a bit of set up to get the best out of the instrument. Thus you either need to know what you are doing, or have access to somebody who knows something about mandolins (no, they are not 8 string small guitars and no, they are not just 8 string violins).

In my particular case, the bridge positioning had to be changed and there was some fine fitting of the bridge needed to ensure optimal contact with the instrument top. While these are simple things to do, if you don't know what to do get a good technician to do them for you. For a final touch, I added a front strap button (a personal thing).

A new set of strings was essential.

This little bit of final fit out was well worth the effort and the instrument has a fine bluegrass tone and a surprisingly good and low action. Based on studies with a stroboscopic tuner, the intonation up the neck is excellent (within +/- 5 cents) once the bridge is correctly setup and positioned.

This is an excellent instrument that outperforms many much more expensive mandolins of its type once it is correctly set up.

Amazing instrument!

Comments about Washburn M116SW A-Style Mandolin:

I have just recently purchased this mandolin. I must say it is absolutely incredible! The tone of this thing is insane. I compared it to a 1930's Gibson mandolin, and for the projection they were just about the same, obviously the tone was warmer and deeper in the Gibson, hence being from the 30's, but it doesn't matter much. Also, the playability is perfect. Because of the neck being a little thicker than other mandolins it makes it a lot easier to play it. I would Recommend this to anyone who wants a GOOD sounding mandolin at a mostly reasonable price.
