OVERVIEW

A single cutaway archtop with custom P-90s pickups and D'Angelico tailpiece.

Originally designed by master-luthier John D’Angelico in 1959, the EX-59 is a classic archtop but equipped with P-90 pickups, ideal for the player who wants to exercise some attitude. Its 17" wide by 3" deep body and signature D’Angelico headstock come together to create excellent balance and playability. An exact replica of the original EX-59, this reissue keeps the ’59 flair, accentuated by the absence of a pickguard and complete with retro-vibe volume and tone knobs. Buttery but unafraid to bite, the EX-59 has been adopted by blues icon Robert Randolph as his guitar of choice. Includes hardshell case.

Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series 59 Hollowbody Electric Guitar with Stairstep Tailpiece:

I've both gigged and recorded with the '59, and I gotta say, its a real favorite in my stable of guitars. It isn't my primary live instrument for the very simple reason that I don't have a flight-worthy case for it, but when I am writing, recording demos at home, basically everything BESIDES playing live, its the first guitar I go to. The single coils are buttery and warm played through my AC15, and with a little dirt dialed in, it sings. It sure looks like a rockabilly or jazz guitar, and its certainly proportioned like one, but frankly, on of my favorite applications for it is drenched in reverb and delay, to conjure up that modern, clean sparkly sound that people love these days. Think Band of Horses, stuff like that. I also love finger picking on it; think the guitar part to These Days, the famous Nico version. Anyway, long story short, its a beautiful instrument that does a wide range of tones with ease, and it wicked fun to play on top of it. Nice looking, too, but that goes without saying.

Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series 59 Hollowbody Electric Guitar with Stairstep Tailpiece:

I was leary about an import jazz box until I picked it up and started playing. Acoustically it rings clear, plugged in it plays smooth, mellow jazz tones that rival guitars 3 or 4 times the price.
The P90 pick ups are exceptional and when you add a bit of dirt to your tone it is just as sweet sounding for great R&B and blues tones as it is for jazz played clean.
A great guitar for the price. I will be looking at other D'Angelico guitars soon!

Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series 59 Hollowbody Electric Guitar with Stairstep Tailpiece:

Wanted to try this guitar out to replace my telecaster to get that retro rock sound.  The P-90 pickups are incredible and really give off that retro sound that's perfect for any rock or jazz guitar player.  It's also the sickest looking guitar I've ever seen. It has a really full punchy sound and the tone controls are very effective and easy to use.  Love this guitar

Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series 59 Hollowbody Electric Guitar with Stairstep Tailpiece:

Been playing for 40 years now, I have always wanted a big "Jazz Box" but couldn't find one under $3000 that sounded and played very well, including the Gibby ES175.. I tried the Joe Pass Epi, Ibanez Artstar and Washburn big box electrics and they seemed stiff and not nearly as playable as this D'angelco.

I play rocking blues and some funky jazz now and this really does it for me. I like P90s and this guitar is a great player! I put some 1/2 wounds on it and they are a perfect combo with the stuff I play. The neck plays smooth and fast. Sounds great through and amp.. I have played it through my Victoria Double Deluxe and my Savage Rohr. Sounds good with fuzz and was too..
