Really I'd give this guitar a 4.5.

I've owned one of these for a year. I mainly use it to record and write songs on. The workmanship is flawless. As with a good archtop, every note and position will sound with equal volume with equal picking strength. It is extremely expressive for lead work compared to all my first name solid bodied guitars.

Positives:

The look was breathtaking. But then, I love archtop guitars. The action is very low. Frets nice. Tuners great. Inlay work is well appointed. There is even inlay on the back of the headstock. It is on the edge of gaudy. The guitar pickups sound full, yet clean. If strummed with reasonable force (more on this later), they pickups are warm with distortion. The guitar is a fine jazz box and would really deliver some nice old style country lead guitar. Blues too.

Soundwise, this is not a guitar for everyone. Mr. D'Angelico built guitars for jazz and some country (Old Country) guitarists, not for thrash metal, hard rock, etc. Interestingly, light touch shredding seems to come across well. Effects pedals respond well to the signal from the guitar. Overall playing this guitar is more a coaxing of great sounds. Banging or slamming will not deliver much.

While the guitar is a high quality build, it isn't heavy duty compared to a good Les Paul, or Heritage, or Stratacaster. And it wasn't perfect. Very nice, but not there are some negatives:

I don't think the guitar will take a lot of abuse, either cosmetically, or physically.

The guitar came setup well action wise, but my first impression was the pickups were set close to the strings as my heavy picking would overdrive the pickups, but not in a good musical way. I lowered the pickups a few twists and that took care of it, but doing it robbed a good bit of the expression from the guitar. Then I realized that many jazz guitarists pick with their fingers like Wes Montgomery did. So then I put the pickups back up where they were, and adjusted my playing to a lighter touch, and all is well. If I want to go crazy on something, I will use one of my solid body guitars.

This might be a positive or a negative. The neck is not as wide and the strings are closer together than most Gibsons, Heritages, or most guitars. Not a problem once one adjusts a bit. Original D'Angelico guitars were known to have slimmer fretboards so there is a touch of lineage with this trait.

Despite being a thinline hollowbody with tone blocks, the guitar will feed back much more easily than the semi-hollowbody and solid body guitars I own. I do have fat hollow bodies that feed back more easily than the D'Angelico. Feeding back can be good or bad depending upon what you are doing with the guitar.

The last negative was that occasionally the tailpiece would "clack" onto the body of the guitar. Back in D'Angelico's day, guitarists didn't jump and dance around the stage. Tailpieces were anchored to the base of the guitar and slung forward loose toward the bridge. This guitar's tailpiece is like that. The "clack" sound was surprising and disturbing the first time it happened. I cured it with a 10 cent felt spacer from the hardware store. The unanchored tailpiece could pose a problem with players jumping around.

All in all, for the money this is a wonderful guitar. It has been very handy for recording many types of music. With it's expressiveness, it has delivered everything asked of it.

Bought it on stupid deal of the day. Very nice looking. Worth every penny i paid for it. Not sure id pay full price for it. Tailpiece made so much noise. D Angelico support said there should be felt pieces on the tailpiece to prevent it but mine must have fallen off. I couldnt find any felt pieces in the case. I fixed it with 50 cents worth of stuff. My felt adhesive job looks awful and takes away from the great look of the guitar. Would have been better if it arrived ready to go instead of relying on my arts and crafts skills

Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series SS Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar with Stairstep Tailpiece:

This is a beautiful guitar, built well and just wonderful to look at. Tone is very satisfactory and great for jazz and blues through a clean channel. I use it mainly for amateur recording. I have no opinion as to road worthiness but the attention to detail is awesome. Playability is great with low action and no buzzes anywhere up or down the neck. Going to restring with flatwound strings so should warm up the tone even more. For the price, this is definitely a guitar worth having and playing for years to come.

Bought without prior playing. Every bit as beautiful as the pictures. Terrific action. I have played for about a week and I was surprised at the clarity and warmth, yet it growls when dirtied up. Sounded glassy with a slide. More lightweight than other semis.

This guitar is a top quality instrument. D'angelico makes some the best guitar strings in the world, so I took a chance buying it before playing it and I'm glad I did. If this company made guitars, I would have to check them out. I have been playing over 40 years, and this guitar is good for every style. The craftsmanship is super.

I should have said D'angelico use to make the best strings in the world. I know they don't produce strings anymore because they sold the company. The new owners are keeping the tradition of producing some of the best guitars ever. I've had my Ex-SS for 2 years now and love it.

Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series SS Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar with Stairstep Tailpiece:

The guitar plays amazingly well. The factory set up was average I'm probably going to lower it at some point but no one absolutely no one can say this guitar is bad. The tone its just..you have to play one to even know what I experienced the moment I plugged it in. It's very different very very very different, but in a good way. The case it came with is super nice and not cheap at all.

Despite that there is still some problems I have with it.
              1. The quality control on these guitars doesn't seem to be on par with similar priced guitars. There is what looks like a chip on the guitar that finish was applied over on the side of the guitar.

              2. The tailpiece does resonate with the whole guitar causing a ring (though it might be the nature of this guitar) doing so causes my playing to change and be more cognizant of muting.

Will I be returning this guitar? To be honest no! Its still a great guitar to begin with.

Everyone always talks about american guitars are the best, but this Korean made guitar is just as good. I think we all have to consider that other people in the world are as passionate about guitars and music as we are.

Why am I being nit picky about the small chip that is hard to spot? well for 2 reasons.

              1. I got this guitar for 650 so I got lucky (stupid deal of the day + backstage pass points). It still retails for 1600 and something that expensive should not have any cosmetic oversights.
              2. Unfortunately the american made stereotype is strong with this one. (Ignoring the last few years of Gibson) At 1600 its usually an american made guitar and that cosmetic oversight would not be there.

Right out of the box it played great, awesome neck, excellent playability. Craftsmanship is superb. I bought this as a blemish, however in my opinion it was mint. The Kent Armstrong pickups are awesome. Tuning is not rock solid, but not really problematic either. The only upgrade I would consider with this is maybe higher quality machines, but I can live with it. Overall, I'm very pleased with it. This guitar sounds GREAT.

I WAS ENTICED BY THE PHOTO AND PRICE. I WAS DISAPPOINTED IN THAT THE BRIGHT RED COLOR IN THE PHOTO IS NOT QUITE WWHAT I RECEIVED. THE COLOR I GOT WAS A DARKER RED. BUT, IT PLAYS WELL, IT WAS A GOOD PRICE, AND I AM A BID FAN OF D'ANGELICO. (I HAVE 4 OTHER MODELS!)

As I opened the case is can hear the "Ahhhh" sound from the heavens. Such a fine design and craftsmanship. I got the surf green and the pictures don't do it justice. The pictures make it look washed out. There was a slight, ever so small inconsistent deviation in the clear coat at the binding. Undetectable to most anyone. I was good with it. No one said life would be fair.
Plugged it in to my old Fender Twin. Yea. That right there. I believe right then I was completely satisfied with my purchase. The neck isn't chunky and the action is very low. Just the way I like it.
My only issue is that it seems too pretty to gig with it. Well, at least the places I've been to.

There is a reason why D'Angelico guitars made it in the metropolitan museum of arts exhibit when featuring guitars that are works of art. This guitar proves that.

Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series SS Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar with Stairstep Tailpiece:

I was very worried about the black/grey with black hardware. The photos on the web looked pretty bland, even though the description indicated the finish was gloss. But the ratings were almost all "5's" and as a SD of the Day, the price was really right. Plus, I did some research and found it should come with a case. Well, when I tore into the box and found a beautiful hard case with a breath taking guitar inside! After I got it home and let it acclimate, I stretched the strings, tuned it up, and plugged it in and was blown away with he low end articulation and the clear ringing of the higher end of the scale. Going for the Clapton "Woman Tone", all of the notes were beautifully clear and punched right through. I have about 30 guitars ranging to 5 grand and none of them sound as good as this. The black hardware kinda has that stealth, bad boy van look and took some getting used to. The color is actually black with a translucent base. Very nice. And I have never seen or felt a nicer set of frets! Sparkling gold and as polished and smooth as can be. Perfect fret end treatment. A real treat as the last LP I bought hurt my hand when I picked it up be the neck. Smoothing sharp fret ends is not my favorite was to spend an afternoon. I read a review somewhere that the tuning machines were not very good. I found them to be very nice. After tuning it and giving it a road test, I picked it up the next morning and none of the strings were more than a cent off. Pretty good for a brand new guitar. It would be nice if they were locking but that's not a big deal for me. They are very smooth and feel like about 18:l. I would say the nut was cut very good, just needs some lubrication. Almost every new guitar I have purchased was cut too high and threw off the intonation, especially on the first 5 frets. This guitar is not only perfect on the nut, but only needs a couple of very small tweeks on two or three bridge screws to zero it right in.
