I bought this with the intention of "altering" it. As another reviewer found, the guitar has intonation problems when tuned to concert pitch... It is a short scale guitar so this is bound to happen. I installed a Fender Strat pickup (angled to get the pick-up under the strings) a jack, and a volume pot, and this thing Rocks! Tuning to an open scale and playing as a slide guitar works well for this instrument. It is a good size for kids without any alterations. A good starter guitar. I bought mine when it was on sale and the result with a little work was well worth it.

First of all the good reviews on here must not play guitar or are in need of a good eye doctor.I wouldn't even hang this on my wall. The finish is nothing like in the stock photo. The finish is horrible, with solid drips of paint on the headstock. The top fret was glued in out of position so it stuck out on the bottom of the neck. I wish you could attach photos to these reviews so you can see I'm not just putting a bad review for no reason. I do not suggest this guitar for anyone. Very disapointed in the quality of dean and lost faith in their company .

Average Guitar

Comments about Dean Playmate JT 3/4 Size Acoustic Guitar:

I own this guitar and I've owned it for around 1 1/2 years now. If there are any young guitarists who are looking to discover if they like playing the guitar or not this is perfect. A good price. If they do not like playing it you do not waste any money practically. After they know they like it and they will continue then this guitar is of no use.

Not Bad!

By Tori-qXzOF

from Pacific Northwest

Comments about Dean Playmate JT 3/4 Size Acoustic Guitar:

This little guitar is a nice size (I'm quite short, with hands to match), sounds decent, and I don't consider it a waste of money at all. The bridge pins were shabby, and broke, so I had the adventure of trying to replace them. Nothing fit, all the holes were too small- even the Hot Rod "Jellyfish" pins that were reviewed as being too small for most guitars! I just ended up drilling out the holes a tiny bit and using the Jellyfish pins. The buzz this guitar had when I first got it was resolved by using a lighter gauge string. Don't expect an amazing guitar at this price, but this one is a great little economy instrument to have kicking around the house!

I ordered this guitar for my niece who is two.I was not expecting much for such an low priced guitar however it was much worse than I thought. The paint is horrible and looks nothing like it dose on the website. The fret board is a disgrace.Over all it is not a good idea to buy this guitar even if it is for a two year old.

Comments about Dean Playmate JT 3/4 Size Acoustic Guitar:

I don't even really play guitar, but I know a waste of money looks/sounds like. This guitar seems like a steal at first, but after just a few minutes of use, you find out why. The strings come out of tune extremely quickly. The paint on the fret board rubs off on your hands. The only way this guitar would be a wise investment is if you know your child is not truly interested in playing, but you still want to give them a chance. Bottom line, not worth your money.

Comments about Dean Playmate JT 3/4 Size Acoustic Guitar:

I've had this little guitar for six months. I did not care for the tuning and intonation. Today I tuned up to ADGCEA, just like the capo to the fith fret. It's built well enough to handle it. Sounds great now.

Untuneable. Unplayable. Even after installing a bone saddle and a set of Grover copy tuners.Don't waste your money. Get a baby Taylor.

This is a Great Little Axe

By GL1A.DMib

Comments about Dean Playmate JT 3/4 Size Acoustic Guitar:

I got a pair of these for my daughter's first guitars and I found the value and quality exceptional. Nice quality, closed back tuning pegs, a nice finish, labeled and serial numbered, great Dean quality. It's Chinese made, the binding is painted on but the guitar stayed in tune (I tuned them to an open D) and they stayed in tune pretty well. Cool cut on the bridge made the girls think they were cool. Gig bag included. This is a great value for a small beginner.

This is a toy!

Comments about Dean Playmate JT 3/4 Size Acoustic Guitar:

This 3/4 size Playmate guitar appears very nice, but is difficult if not impossible to tune. It appears to be in tune with the open strings, but when chords are played it is terrible! This unit must have been made improperly since I see the same criticisms by others. Only buy this as a toy, not as an instrument to play music!

Better Luck Next Time

By John-54Sqa

from Altanta, GA.

Comments about Dean Playmate JT 3/4 Size Acoustic Guitar:

Bought the guitar for to travel. Look was good., but like many other reviews, tuning was an issue. Open the tune was good, play a chord and BAM out of tune (intonation). I also would get a very dirty left hand (fretting hand). The guitar didn't look dirty but after five minutes of playing my hand was filthy.

Not Good to Learn On

By KD-cEQYO

from Montana

Comments about Dean Playmate JT 3/4 Size Acoustic Guitar:

We've had this for a while now, and although it's a great price, it's difficult to play, even with nice light gauge strings. My daughter can do better playing my full sized acoustic because the fretboard is so much better and easier on the fingers. If you're looking for a kids guitar, I'd probably put the money towards a small full sized one instead of this one.

Doesn't note accurately,

By Mando

from Midwest

Comments about Dean Playmate JT 3/4 Size Acoustic Guitar:

"You get what you pay for." The guitar is solid in construction, nice easy action for a child, but it notes terribly. The guitar can be in perfect tune with the strings open, but once you make a chord, it is way out of tune. Very disappointed. Bought it as a starter for our 5 year old.

Comments about Dean Playmate JT 3/4 Size Acoustic Guitar:

If you are going to get a guitar, spend a little more money and get something that is useful. I bought this for my son and it is a pretty sad guitar. It does not stay in tune and it sounds very tinny. It is more a toy than a real guitar.

Just A little Work

Comments about Dean Playmate JT 3/4 Size Acoustic Guitar:

I got this guitar for my wife who is just starting to learn. And when she saw the color well I relized if it needed something done it I would just go a do it. First I replced the strings with a set of D'Addario held open tuning but quickly lost it when she did a chord. Replaced the tuning machines and bridge and it held in tune. The sound improved greatly, Would I recommend this guitar not unless your going to do a little work to it. Built pretty good.
