OVERVIEW

(Open Box) Gibson's classic J-200 style with eSonic2 electronics and generous cutaway.

Epiphone's version of the Gibson classic J-200, known as the "King of the Flat Tops", a guitar that has graced stages across the world in the hands of musical legends from Elvis to Emmylou. This modernized EJ-200SCE, features a jumbo maple body with a select spruce top, a stylish mustache bridge, gold hardware, crown inlays on the fingerboard, and a huge sound easily amplified by the an eSonic2 preamp with built-in tuner and NanoFlex/NanoMag pickups. Case sold separately.

A body full of grace
The EJ-200SCE's construction features a solid spruce top with select maple, back and sides and a striking cutaway that provides you better fret access than its predecessor. This 25.5" scale beauty also comes with Epiphone's SlimTaper select maple neck which helps give you a smoother ride up and down the rosewood fingerboard. The rosewood fingerboard has vintage style pearloid crown inlays and a 1.68" nut along with our iconic Sloped Dovewing Epiphone headstock with premium die-cast gold 14:1 tuners.

A fresh spin on classic tone
The tone from the EJ-200SCE's select maple top is enhanced by the classic rosewood "mustache" bridge and synthetic bone saddle. A tortoise-style pickguard with a unique dandelion art pattern helps round-out the EJ-200SCE's iconic look. Thanks to it's combination of tonewoods and construction, the EJ-200SCE provides you with a solid, yet balanced tone which lets rhythm guitarists and singer-songwriters feel like they're being backed up by a band even when they're playing a set pared down. The rich and complex tones the EJ-200SCE will truly inspire musicians everywhere over and over again.

Plug it in, plug it in
Taking the J-200 to whole new levels sonically, the EJ200CE features the Epiphone eSonic2 preamp system which features a built-in, easy-to-use tuner. And when you're playing, you don't have to worry about any accidental popping as the eSonic2 automatically mutes your output. When you push in the tuner button and unplug your guitar, it also keeps it "pop" free. The EJ-200SCE also provides you with tone-shaping options - NanoFlex Tone, NanoMag Tone, Stereo Blend - as well as Master Volume, and a Low Battery indicator and a Phase switch to help eliminate unwanted feedback. The eSonic2 is powered by two 2032 lithium watch batteries which are not only lightweight, but also last significantly longer life than more traditional, heavier 9V batteries.

Revolutionary stereo pickups
The EJ-200SCE features a compensated saddle with Shadow Germany's proprietary NanoFlex, low-impedance pickup. The NanoFlex's unique flexible sensing material has integrated active electronics that picks up string vibration as well as top and body vibrations for a truly acoustic tone without the harshness usually associated with piezos. As a compliment, there is a NanoMag pickup mounted at the harmonic-rich end of the fingerboard. It features three Samarian-Cobalt magnets and an integrated active circuit to capture all the highs and lows, including a wide range of harmonics. The preamp allows you to chose 1/4" mono output blending both pickups or 1/4" stereo output splitting the two pickups, giving you incredible flexibility and opportunities to create the perfect acoustic tone live.

Check the drop-down menu to the right to select Black, Natural or Vintage Sunburst finish.

I have been looking at this guitar for some time but was hesitant to get one. I had never played a jumbo before. I played a used one in my local guitar shop and liked it so much I ordered one from MF the next day! First thing you notice is the finish. Mine is the Vintage Sunburst and it is flawless... The way the color wraps around the guitar is stunning. It looks great from any angle.... Mine was setup perfectly. That is saying something! I like my Epiphones but most need work. This one is really nice. Plays very easy. It sounds great acoustic. Plenty loud. It really comes alive when plugged in! The electronics are amazing! From finger picking to hard strumming, it sounds fantastic! Line in a chorus pedal and magic happens! I am still getting used to the Jumbo size but it is over all very comfortable to play. It does jack your arm up a bit while sitting but you get used to it. I got this guitar to do acoustic gigs with my son. Very glad I did. This guitar is the whole package. Beautiful looks, great sound and great price! The only other Epi that I have played that was any better out of the box was the Masterbuilt. This Jumbo looks just as good or better, has the same electronics and is cheaper. I Am very happy with it!!!

I'm writing this follow up to my original review. I really wanted to like this guitar but, I'm used to smaller body guitars and, I just couldn't get comfortable with it. I have a Hummingbird Pro and, the electronics are astounding! I figured that since the electronics were Shadow in the EJ 200 that this would be a major improvement from the Hummer-not! I sold it and, went with a Breedlove Discovery Concert CE and, I will add that I went to the store and, played one B4 I purchased. No more ordering online unless I'm sure that the instrument is exactly what I want. I'm not saying that ordering online is bad, because my Hummingbird Pro came from MF and, I got a Great deal and, the guitar is awesome. I've been playing solid body electrics for well over 50yrs. and, there are no surprises, I know what to expect there but, the acoustic market can have a lot more variations and, I would definately recommend getting your hands on one to see if it is the one for you before you order or purchase directly. Just friendly advice.

After one year of playing...

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200SCE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

...I received this guitar last year. I decided to play it for a year and then give it a review. I play about 275 shows a year in various size venues both inside and outside, year round, alone in a solo setting as well as in acoustic duos, trios and in full production bands. I have used this guitar in all of those live performance situations as well as numerous recording situations and general 'around-the-house' playing. So, how did it hold up? This is a absolutely great guitar. For years I have dreamed of owning a Gibson J200, but I actually play music for a living and it is my only source of income, so the price has just been too prohibitive. The price on this guitar is ridiculously affordable, well within anyone's ability wiling to save up for a few weeks. The sound of this instrument both plugged in and unplugged is pretty diverse. The two pickups blend well and stand alone fine. The stereo function is a real plus. I experiment with two gtr cables and blend two channels on my mixer with various settings and slightly different effects. It's about the funnest guitar to play that I have ever owned. The body is very well constructed and light, especially for a jumbo bodied guitar. I've had to do seasonal adjustments on the neck, but I have never owned a guitar that didn't require this.It is a great sounding guitar with an ease of playability that is usually reserved for guitars I've played worth thousands of dollars. When it comes to the looks of the guitar... I have a black one with gold hardware and it is a beauty. I get comments on it everytime I take it out of its case at a show. I can't bear to keep it in it's case when I am home. I always seem to have it within arms reach or at least in my line of sight. If you do buy this one, you will definately have to buy the case that goes with it as not many genaric cases will fit around this big guitar. The case I bought for mine provides great protection, but one of the clasps doesn't fasten (had to be something). After one year of dragging this guitar from gig to gig and session to session I can truely say that this is one thing I have bought in the past 5 years that has actually been worth the money spent. I would highly recomend this for songwriters as wll. Strum one chod on ths, and you'll feel like writing a song with it. A pure joy to play.

A GREAT guitar, with full sound

By GusMan

from Bellingham, WA

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200SCE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I own 3 $$$ Taylor guitars (710ce, 812ce, T5 Custom) and wanted a less expensive guitar for taking boating, camping and jamming outdoors. So I bought this EJ-200CE (maple) guitar because the price looked great and the light color wouldn't get too hot in the sunlight. Wasn't expecting it to become my MAIN guitar!!! I use it all the time. It has a great full sound. Played finger style using the palm of my hand for rhythm makes is sound as though I've got perussion thing going. And the unplugged volume and sound quality (when playing outdoors) is better than my $3000 Taylors. Plugged in, the sound is very good, although the Taylors do sound better in that regard, because of their "expression system". My only complaint was the top 3 strings rattled off the frets when I received it so I spent $50 and had it setup correctly. Bottom line, if you want ONE guitar to take with you that has great action and sound, and not worry about it getting dinged...get this one.

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200SCE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

overall this guitar is an unreal steal for the money
bought this guitar 2 years ago and was astonished by the tone, finish, and just every all around feature of this guitar for the price
AMAZING!!! this guitar has insane tone plugged and unplugged...ive played through tons of amps and pa's and no matter what type or quality of amp ive used i still get awesome sound...
great amazing guitar for the price...i was planning on forking out the cash for a high end taylor till i played this and then i was sold...the low tones are unmatched, and it doesn't drowned out the highs, plus the great tuner, not to mention the insanity that comes from both of the pickups, the nanoflex and the magnaflex!!!! couldn't pass it up...and you shouldn't either...

Worth the bucks !

By Richard Raley

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200SCE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Came to me in short order. Action needed no adjustment out of the box. Plugged into my little Roland AC 60, and was blown away with the nanoflex pickups. Sounds as good as my Martin OMC Aura or my Taylor 714, The finish did have a couple of imperfections. Really not visible, unless you're really up close and personal doing an inspect. Certainly livable for the price. I have other Epi's from 64 and 65. The Caballero and the Cortez. Both have served me well though the yrs! I expect this to do the same!

I have played for 25+ yrs. Toured with Toby Keith from 1982-1995. I really do like this guitar. No it's not a Gibson J200 but it's not $4000. either. My opinion your hard pressed to tell the difference in sound. I really like this guitar. Built solid, Sounds great, Wonderful buy. Looks good too. This guitar is priced way to low. I own 9 different guitars and 4 of them are Epiphones. What else can be said...

I don't think you can buy a better guitar at this price. My Martin Shenandoah doesn't hold a candle to it. Excellent craftsmanship combined with a warm resounding tone and great playability. The built in tuner is a great added feature. Mine came set up by Epiphone in the USA and number 18 did a magnificent job. An all around great guitar.

Great Looking "eye candy" Guitar lot of flair
      Good sounding guitar limited resonance
Versatile player bluegrass, counry, western, blues, folk styles.

Construction: selected Top; select Spruce means, it does not mean that it is Laminate. It is solid wood, just not of the same cut. Which means it will have different grain patterns, that is all.

This guitar lookd like a Gibson J-200 and plays like a Epi DR-100. I had thrre of them two from China and one from Indonesia in SNBT and BLK.

      Horrible Longevity and Reliability

      By Patrick Surls

      from Kansas City

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200SCE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Don't buy this thing. If you want a jumbo, shell out for a nice one. This one will not last.
Well Epiphone and I have been through alot together. Played many many shows with epiphone guitars and they have all been great... Until this one. Got this baby and plugged it in just over a year ago and it sounded great. The 2 pickups really gives it a good rich tone. Sounded great and played several shows with it. Now just after my warranty is up... The electronics in it have gone bad. This has angered my beyond belief. I would expect a pickup out of a $200 guitar to last 1 year, but this is pathetic. This will be my last Epiphone purchase. I don't recommend buying this.
Good for 1 year until all electronics died suddenly
worth about $100. Might as well consider it just an acoustic as apposed to an Electic Acoustic.

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200SCE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I gave it higher than average rating because this guitar has so much appeal to the eye. It has a good balanced sound but lack resonance
Good features, neck strap button, gold hardware, nice elegant bridg work, neck with plastic inlaids, great pickguard design
I had big problems with the neck and still this guitar has no solid Top. The setup was crappy and the guitars were unplayable. I owned three of these and will be selling them.
The lack of a solid top compromises the resonance the guitar lacks and I compared my three to a Lakedwood jumbo and my D-15 mahogany.
This is an Eye-Candy guitar. It is not bad for a beginner who has a big frame, but I prefer solid top guitars now-a-days. And there are many at this price

      Epiphone EJ200 CE

      By John Callahan

      from syracuse

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200SCE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Excellent guitar with a nice setup out of the box. Tones are great and the playability is what I was looking for without the cost.
Like the electronics and the on board tuner. We changed the strings to Martin's and went to a heavier gauge and this made a difference in the sound- very positive. Would get the case. This is a jumbo and will not fit in a normal acoustic case as the Epiphone headstock elongates past the upper case closure. We made a sock for this so the headstock would not get damaged in transport. It is such a pretty guitar, get a case for the trouble it saves.
Very nice quality and it smells like wood. The electronics amplify this really well and the different pickups are very cool to adjust and play around with. People are blown away by the nice sound and the amplification is a plus -but unplugged as well, it sounds great.
Great value in comparison to a similar Gibson. Gibson wins hands down, but I would not want to take my Gibson out to where it could be damaged. I lend this to my son and have no worries. He really is just playing the heck out of this all of the time. We are very happy to have found this and tike the cutaway access too.

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200SCE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Upon opening the box, I was blown away by the beauty and craftsmanship in the fit and finish. Solid maple back and sides. Spruce top Rosewood bridge and fingerboard. Out of the box,, it was playable, but I knew it could be better. The neck has a slight up bow. I turned the truss rod slightly to my right, facing down the neck from the headstock.. After playing a couple hours, I made another adjustment equal to the first. The neck has a slight relief and plays much better

I have played live for 27 years now and love the jumbo acoustics. Epiphone has a beautiful sound and the guitar comes setup nicely. I literally unwrapped it and took it to work with me the same day.

Near perfect finsh and detailing. Very clear and powerful tone.
This Guitar is the same as the Gibson version and sounds the same. I noticed that it was used on stage at the Kennedy Honors this years for Neil Diamond. It is my 19th guitar and my third Gibson one of which is 50 years old.

A Great priced, well made guitar. Works straight out of the box. It's made of great wood, so you can take it anywhere, i even had mine out in the forest one night. The only con is that my G string tuner isn't working well. But i could highly recommend it!

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200SCE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I just took delivery of the guitar today, so the above are just my first impressions. I'm sure I'll like it even more when I've played it for a while and get it set up to suit my style of playing. Just repeating what I've said already, this guitar is outstanding for the price. If you want a great sounding, nice playing guitar, and you don't want to worry so much about gigging it or playing it at parties etc. don't hesitate, buy this one!
The electronics are very good, quiet and great tone. I like the cutaway design. Sounds great unplugged too, although I think the strings it shipped with aren't very good, will be replacing them ASAP with some D'Addarios coated. I just play at home and at parties these days, so the price point of this guitar is a great feature too.
The finish is excellent, I can't find a mark or a blemish anywhere, love the sunburst colour and it really shines nice. Feels great to hold and play, well set up, straight out of the box (almost in tune too, just a tone flat!). My says "made in china", but I believe they're know made in Indonesia and that they are better? Wonder if mine is from old stock? Anyway, I can't fault the quality at all.

I bought the matching Epiphone case for it too (see separate review), just $89! It's a really tight fit in there though, but I expect it will get easier with use.
Amazing vallue for money! I've never played a Gibson J200, but I do own a 1969 Gibson SG and the action on this Epi isn't far off being as good, the intonation is actually better than my SG. I've seen a lot of pros playing Epiphone, so I figured they must be OK... now I know why!

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200SCE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I really like this guitar…obviously I would prefer the gibson but who has 2k to spend in this economy? This is not a comparison because in reality…there is none. This completely about the Epiphone and how well it holds up. The guitar itself is built very well and seems sturdy. The body is exceptionally thick but that helps the bass sound a ton although, compared to other guitars and how big the body is… the sound is weak. Plugged in it sounds great/adequate. Overall this is a guitar you must play for yourself.

Comments about Epiphone EJ-200SCE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've been playing this guitar for about three months now. It is, by far, the best guitar I've ever owned. In my opinion, this is the best guitar on the market in this price range.
Sounds great unplugged as well as plugged in.
Mine has different electronics - it doesn't have the E-sonic. It has the Elan-4TN electronics system. I'm not sure if that is new or if maybe the E-sonic replaced this system.
I can't figure out how to get the tuner to work properly - it's possible the battery needs changed or something. But this guitar stays in tune very well.
Physically, it looks like a Gibson. Epiphone is, of course, owned by Gibson and is a sister company. This is the Epiphone version of the Gibson J-200. The only real difference is that this guitar (mine anyway) was made in Indonesia and the Gibson J-200 is hand-made in Nashville. And this guitar is over three-thousand cheaper. I've played both of them and there is very little difference in tone. Gibson does use a higher quality wood and it's solid whereas this guitar has a spruce top and maple back and sides.
The finish is gorgeous and it looks much more expensive than it actually is.
Out of the box, I changed the stock strings to Black Diamond lights (11s. The guitar comes with 12s I think). That elimited a buzz on the low E string. I also had it adjusted just slightly and it sounds great. Maple will mellow out over time, so give it a chance.
I play a lot and I play hard (classic rock, progressive rock, Roy Orbison style rockabilly) so I change the strings once a month.
Fantastic guitar at this price. It's not a Gibson but it might as well be.
Mine is the Vintage Sunburst color.
