I received my AJ 500RE about a week ago. I have been a full time pro bassist for over 30 years and deciced to start playing guitar because of my recent endevors in song writing, and home studio production. I could have spent thousands of dollars if necessary, and had decided that I would if it meant I would feel inspired to commit to the dicipline of learning a whole new axe! I read the hands on review on this web site and was impressed with the story about the new "Masterbuilt" line from Epiphone. So I decided to try one. After all, they do offer that 45 day return policy. When I received the guitar there were a few minor flaws. I was a little disappointed that the saddle would require a bit of correction. Also there were 3 fret ends left razor sharp! I was able to smooth them very easily myself. So with those small imperfections corrected. The instrument has turned out to be a remarkable value. It sounds, and plays as good as some of the Gibson J45's I tried.Although I myself am only a beginner on guitar, I play with some "monsters". They checked it out (along with the luthier I use for my basses), and everyone is blown away with the neck shape, the satin finish, quality of woods, and 99.9% of the quality craftsmanship. I would say BUY ONE! You can't go wrong with the instrument, and there is always that return policy if it doesn't tickle your fancy.

I really wanted to like this guitar. Looked beautiful with a great "vintage" vibe. Sounded gorgeous in 1st position. Buzzed like mad above the 5th fret. Took it to a shop, where they helped it a little, but it was still not great. Sent it back for a new one. New one had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM. Both inspected by the same guy at Epi: #29. That guy must be asleep at the wheel. There was a small hump in the neck where it met the body - the term used by the shop was "roller-coaster neck". To Musician's Friend's credit, they are cheerfully taking it back a second time and replacing it with a completely different model (I learned my lesson). The first time was a rather slow turn-around though - they had it in their hands for a week and a half before they sent out my new one. Hopefully this time will be a bit quicker.

Cannot put it down!

Suddenly I got good. I can't put it down. I love what I hear and I cannot believe it is coming from my hands. Great tone. I bought this on reading reviews. I cut through the hype and went for tone! I played it's older sibling the Gibson J-45 Rosewood. The Epiphone sounded more alive. It must be the satin finish. Either way, I bet when you pick it up, you'll see/hear what I mean.Even my 7 year old said we could now give away the little Fender. He too couldn't put it down.

Amazing

By Fidlinround

from Edmond, OK

I've owned this guitar for about 2 months. The first thing I did was take it to my freind at a local guitar shop, who is a retired (semi) mechanical engineer. After a little fine tuning and minor adustments, it has turned out to be an outstanding guitar, with remarkable tones, easy playabillity, and superb quality. Features, such as the baggs pickup, rosewood back and sides, solid sitka spruce top, all at an affordable price, is nothing short of amazing! I would highly recommend this guitar to anyone who plays professionally, as well as casually. You won't be sorry!

Epiphone Masterbilt AJ-500RE

By David A. Tiangco-g5jST

from Virginia Beach, VA

Thick beautiful tone that rings loud and clear. I bought this guitar online as a beater, one that I wouldn't be afraid of playing every day and banging up. I hadn't even heard it yet, but the price was right, so I thought I'd give it a chance. After the first 5 minutes of strumming, I was convinced that this was my new main acoustic. Bass and resonance you can feel in your chest. Glassy high end with complex overtones. Epiphone has made something very special, indulge yourself!

This Guitar Has Heart

I have owned many guitars over the past 30+ years of playing semi-pro and I haven't found the full distinct tone of this Masterbilt in an acoustic near this price. No quality issues at all with mine, but it did need a bit of setup tweaking. I gave it a 9 on features because so many acoustic-electric guitars have tone controls or an eq. case is much cooler than I thought it would be.

Play one

Someone said they were looking for a banger guitar. Play this one and it will become your baby. Nothing striking about the appearance. This guitar was built to be played and you'll love playing it. I've done alot of solo work and this instrument is the orchestra I wish I had behind me the past thirty years. There are some beautiful guitars I'd buy to decorate my living room but this is the one I'd play to entertain. Play one.

Don't let the price fool you

By Winchester 4570

I bought this guitar for my daughter initially. I have a Martin OM42 that is considered my guitar at the house. I looked the Epi all over and played it. I was shocked by the quality and sound. I turned around and ordered one of the EF models to compare it to my Martin that has a retail price of 6k. It plays and sounds every bit as good as my Martin does. I still can hardly believe it. If you're thinking about buying one, treat yourself. If you know true value in a guitar, you'll quickly recognize that these are a steal. I'm going to buy one of the Classic models next. They are just that good.

Ask me a question

I received my AJ 500RE about a week ago. Sound & Value

By TC-7tCto

Sounds great. Each time that I play my Epi-Masterbilt AJ500-RE unplugged,it seems to sound better than my Martin D-28. It's really is a "Masterbuilt". Not to mention the well-built guitar case that came with it FREE. You get what you pay for. I recommend this fine instrument whether you already have a collection of guitars. Happy Holidays! This is not your stereotypical Epiphone.

By WontGetFooledAgain420

See all my reviews

When most people think about Epiphone, they think of cheaper versions of Gibson guitars. That is completely not the case with this guitar, and with all the Masterbilt series for that matter. I purchased this with part of my graduation money, and I haven't stopped playing it yet. I only gave it 4.5 stars for features because it doesn't have EQ. This is not a real problem though, since any acoustic amp or soundboard has plenty of EQ. The neck is the smoothest thing I've ever felt, and it has a greatly balanced tone with a very full bottom end. Beautiful!

Light and Loud!

By Goodfrequency

from Statesville, NC

I am very pleased with this guitar. I did a lot of research before deciding on the AJ and feel I made a good choice. The guitar is very loud and has great sustain. A lot of reviews I have read state this guitar sounds as good as those costing two and three times as much. Although I don't have much experience with high-priced guitars, I can't imagine higher-priced guitars sounding that much better than this one. Not hundreds or thousands of $$ difference anyway. While the appointments are simple, the satin finish looks great...a nice change from the 'glossy' guitars I've have/had. Very clean build, and the electronics sound great, even through my little practice amp. The guitar arrived promptly and well set-up with good action and a great gig-bag complete with hygrometer. Overall, I'd say the quality and sound of this guitar are excellent for the price.

Worth every penny!

This is a wonderful guitar that was 'handcrafted in China'. It has surprising depth and richness for its price. I can't find a flaw in craftsmanship anywhere. The set up is good right out of the box. It comes with a great semi hard gig bag. As for the sound, I always look for a certain depth and richness out of any guitar I play or buy. Regardless of its brand name, reputation and price if it doesn't have it I am not interested. Well, this one does and I couldn't be more pleased. Money well spent!

Forget About Quality for Price...

By 19andCounting

from NYC

...this is an excellent guitar at any price. Mine came from MF set up very nicely, a quick change of strings and I was ready to go. The wood is very resonant, it is solid rosewood back and sides..very loud. I don't love the dreadnaught shape, but it does give you a nice bass sound. Fingering is easy, although slighly higher up the neck. I am sure if I take it to my guitar guy he can adjust it, but not necessary for the here and now. The case is very cool and came with the instrument..a hard soft case with plush lining will protect it from the elements..I have a Martin D18, sounds are comparable and this feels more substantial in my hands.

AMAZING SOUND.

By TAYLORFANFOR LIFE

I am truely amazed at the sound this guitar produces. Booming base and crystal clear higher end. I mean this baby is super loud unplugged. Really a beautiful guitar at a reasonable price. I really like the sound the jumbo body produces. It's like night and day compared to regular sized acoustic. And easy to play. Very smooth action. Another bonus is the outstanding case it comes with. Very slight buzzing in higher strings but the large sound really overcomes this pretty much. Haven't had the need to change strings, usually an automatic when purchasing a new guitar, but this baby sounded so good as is. I recommend the masterbilt jumbo. Best sound for the money. Why spend thousands on american made when you can get all the sound you need from the cheaper model? (cheaper in price not quality) The masterbilt series is definitely one of Epiphone's greatest achievement in a long line of excellent and affordable guitars.
