Don't Forget

A celebration of the original Strat with all the right stuff.

The Fender Custom Shop celebrates the diamond jubilee of the world' greatest electric guitar with the 60th Anniversary 1954 Heavy Relic Stratocaster guitar. This special guitar honors the Stratocaster' very first model year and is finely crafted with a rich selection of features and appointments, in addition to a heavy relic treatment that evokes decades of use, abuse and hard-fought wear and tear.

The one-piece ash body features a battered nitrocellulose lacquer finish in a choice of colors. The one-piece quartersawn maple neck has a comfortable 1954 œU-shaped profile and tinted lacquer finish, and the maple fingerboard has a 9.5 radius and 21 6105 frets for smooth modern playability. Three 1954 single-coil Stratocaster pickups deliver a singing original-era voice.

Other features include modern five-way pickup switching, a single-ply white pickguard, synchronized tremolo bridge with six œpatent pending saddles and serial number-stamped tremolo backplate (a special 1954 touch), vintage-style tuners and nickelchrome hardware. The guitar comes in a tweed œcenter-pocket case with Stratocaster 60th anniversary embroidery and an included 60th anniversary commemorative book.

Comments about Fender Custom Shop 1954 Heavy Relic Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Bigger neck with soft shoulders. Very vintage pickups. Old school Strat with bigger frets and a flatter fretboard. Nothing bad but it does cost. Better to have one instrument you love than a dozen so-so that do not inspire. Always love picking this up. Mine has a natural finish, no color.

Comments about Fender Custom Shop 1954 Heavy Relic Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Jazzmasters and Les Pauls have been my main guitars since the 1990s. I finally got the itch to get a "Real" Strat. I had narrowed it down to an AV 56 or a (used) 50s style Custom Shop. Then one weekend MF had (most of) these 54s at a sale price which would qualify for SDOTD. I pounced. The 1954 Heavy Relic and 1954 NOS were both available in this sale. I chose the Charcoal Frost at 7.05 lbs in Heavy Relic. I don't wow over the look of Relics, but I can ignore that. Other factors such as price, color, and weight came ahead of relic job.

I was super happy for the big neck and low output pickups on this '54. The radius and bigger frets are welcome additions. Regarding the pickups, I should probably point out that these are surprisingly low output. They nail the classic pristine and glassy Strat sound. That's just what I wanted, but it's going to be too quiet for some people.

Yeah, I'm delighted with this Strat -- given what I paid -- and I probably have all the Strat I need for a long time. My Jazzmasters have been feeling neglected since this one arrived.
