Great value for beginners and hotrodders

By Greg

I took a flier last month on a sunburst Retrorocket X for $99 on a Stupid Deal of the Day. I was looking for a Strat-style guitar with single coil pickups and couldn't pass it up for the price. The neck is great - straight, smooth with satin finish, and the fret work is pretty good. Stock, the sound is every bit as good as a MIM Strat for a lot less money. Also, from what I can tell, all of the Fernandes X series guitars have similar build quality. Great guitar for a beginner. For hotrodders, it's a good, inexpensive platform for modding. I spent another $100 for a set of GFS Texas Alnicos (with a hotter bridge pup), and upgraded the pots and switch. Now I've got a great sounding, easy playing Texas rocker for $200! Check out Fernandes.

Great little guitar

I bought the sunburst model for $99 SDOTD. For $99, this was a ridiculously good guitar. I bought it mainly because of the price and 16" radius. That flat, thin neck allows for some easy, fast fingering all over the fretboard. The pickups are ok, voiced very trebly and a little harsh but not in a bad way. Quite a bit of hum in pos 1/3/5. Frets are good, filed but not polished. Set up was good out of the box. Major plus for me was it's as light as a feather. Trem is a little wacky, not like a strat at all.

Gigged with it, more info

Ok, I've gigged with this guitar and I've been playing it like crazy. The trem only goes down, I forget what they call that. It looks like the neck is one piece of wood. It's really, really fast and combined with the 16" radius, it plays super easy. Typical overseas budget guitar issues, loose parts, a little cheap but overall better than most. The fretboard floats over the pick guard for an inch or two and the "Made in China" sticker is killing me. The frets are finished nicely, almost polished even though I see a little more wear than I should given the short time I've had it. I thought the pick guard was trashed until I realized it still had the protective plastic on it. It's a nice two ply pearloid with little geometric shapes. I usually never change pu's on cheap guitars but I might on this one. It plays well enough to want to improve it. The finish seems to be a little thin. It's reacting to my arm sweat and it's picking up little swirls that really shouldn't show up so quickly. But it still looks beautiful. For the money, this is a great guitar. At any price, it's a really good guitar.

Musicians friend was clearance-ing these retro rockets for 99 dollars once. I picked up mine in candy red. I have 6 other mid priced guitars and this thing plays as good or better than anything I have ever owned.stays in tune beautifully. Smooth action and frets. great sound. this guitar is a bargain at any price. I will never part with it!

Ask me a question

Bought it as backup. For the money it a good sounding guitar. It is a good playing guitar and the finish is really quality looking. good tuners that hold a tune. Mine is red and really good looking. I can play Santana licks with control on this fretboard. and it has good sustain and actionThe only thing I might ask Fernandes to improve on for a guitar of this price range is to have some a better looking headstock. This is a keeper for the money I have enjoyed playing it. I have other guitars by Fender, Gibson, Parker and Martin...this one is a back up to my Fender and I love playing it. It is light sustains well and has a fast neck and pretty decent pickups for a model in this price range. If you want a under 300 dollar strat copy this is a good choice.

Great guitar for the money

By TropiRock

First - my Fernandes is the RetroRocket Pro (with the sustainer) and not the RetroRocket X. Quality-wise, they are probably very similar. I bought the Fernandes about 2 months ago (sorry, MusiciansFriend, I love you guys but you don't carry the Pro model that I wanted) and it is a joy to play. I don't gig any longer, but dedicate my spare time to studio recording. I have a few expensive guitars, but wanted the brighter Strat-sound and greater sustain. The Fernandes does a great job, tone is superb and the sustainer pickup on the Pro model is unbelievable. Way cool. The guitar is built with better-than-expected quality, neck is quite fast, and the finish is beautiful. The keys might not look as finished as those on my Les Paul, but they hold up well and I seldom have to re-tune. The tremelo bridge works fine and doesn't throw the guitar out of tune. If you're looking for a fun, decent quality guitar without breaking the bank, Fernandes makes a solid product. If you were to buy one of the models (Pro or Elite) with the sustainer pickup, it'll blow your mind. You can hold a note until your next birthday and the harmonics are outrageous.

A great beginners guitar!!

By Dillinger56

from Randolph, MA

I played one about a month ago, and it really isn`t a bad sounding axe. I put it through a rigorous test, and the action isn`t bad at all, and pretty much stayed in tune. Reminds me of an old Fender Mustang I had years ago. For the money, it will make a great X-mas gift for those aspiring guitar players in your life.

Everything I Was Hoping For

First of all, this is one hot looking guitar...totally looks the part of a surf guitar. But does it play like one? The answer is pretty darn close to it. You can get killer treble out of this, and the single coils really put out some sound. Whammy bar doesn't pull it out of tune either. I'm just totally impressed that something so inexpensive can sound nearly or as good as a real strat. And need I say again, this guitar really looks good. The red is deep and gorgeous and the pickguard is just like the one on my last surf guitar. Frets aren't sharp but could be slightly smoother and the tuners seem rather cheap although they function well enough. But it meets my needs without killing me on price. I am way happy with this.

Bottom line, this is a beautiful guitar with some quality issues. My Epiphone Dot is a better made guitar, but the Retrorocket gives me a strat-like sound at a small fraction of the strat price. I may replace the nut, and try some better strings to see if that helps my tuning issues. I am still very happy with my purchase. With my RP150, I get some killer tones. The Fernandes Retrorocket gives me the flexibility to play all the classic tunes I love, from Pipeline to Beatles to Steppenwolf to all my favorite 70s rock. If it had a better quality nut and could stay in tune a little better, this would be incredible. Even so, it is way worth what I paid.
So I've been using this red Retrorocket for over 6 months now. It is still gorgeous and great to play. It has replaced my Epiphone Dot as my go to guitar, although the Dot is definitely better made. I just love the sound of the 3-single coils on this baby, and the neck seems to be quicker. I do enjoy the whammy bar on this but herein lies one of the quality issues I've come across.
Finish and general quality are very good. This thing is beautiful. However, after 6 months, I can say the nuts on these Fernandes X guitars really suck. In at least half the Fernandes X series guitars I have played, the nut needs to be shimmed at the 1st and/or 2nd string. Also, if I bend let's say the 1st, 2nd, ot 3rd string at the first fret, it pops out of the nut. Very frustrating when you're trying to play a lead. Also, the whammy consistently pulls some of the strings (mainly the 5th and 6th) out of tune, so you wind up having to tune this baby a lot. The tuner machines seem to be low quality. I am happy with the pickups and electronics...no issues here.
