Don't Forget

Based on the original built in 1937 for cowboy star Ray Whitley.

The Gibson Western Classic Acoustic Guitar offers just about every luxurious touch Gibson's luthiers could think of. The Western Classic captures the guitar's vintage feel perfectly. The exotic woods”including a premium solid Sitka spruce top, solid Indian rosewood back and sides, eastern curly maple neck, and ebony fretboard”are just the ground work. On top is built one of the most brilliantly ornamented Gibson guitars ever with 4-ply top and back binding, multi-ply fingerboard binding with birdsbeak, moustache bridge, mother-of-pearl graduated block fretboard and bridge inlays, Grover tuners, multi-layer SJ-200 shaped pickguard, 3-rope marquetry, and nostalgic torch headstock inlay. Gibson builds fewer than 30 Western Classic Prewar 200 guitars each year.

It's all about the sound

Comments about Gibson SJ-200 Western Classic Acoustic Guitar:

This guitar is a real boomer. A rosewood J-200 is really something as far as sound goes. The bass is like no other guitar. Plays like a dream also.Mine, like the other reviewers, has slight imperfections in finish. Hard to understand why Gibson cannot get this together. They are very minor. I saw them when I bought it but purchased anyway. The sound rules over everything else.

Where does Gibson go from the J-200 Western Classi

Comments about Gibson SJ-200 Western Classic Acoustic Guitar:

When purchasing my Western Classic,(Sept.2000) I wasn't sure if this was right for me.mostly theprice and the purpose in owning it.having a keenear for music I learned right away that this Instrument topped the tone and sustain of any major brand flat top I ever played or heard played. The buttery melow tone in recordings nearly blew me away at first and after almost ten years,it seemes to sound better with age.I found out that it doesn't mix well with Instruments that are not of high quality. thereis definately a noticable difference in the outcome of the overall sound. I've never once, since owning this flat top had to look over my shoulder looking for something better ! Can Gibson TOP this flat top ?

Comments about Gibson SJ-200 Western Classic Acoustic Guitar:

What a beauty... and a great sounding guitar. I had to own one and don't regret it. However, the quality of finish in the "small details" department is really lacking on this instrument. For instance, mine had finish flaws on the top edge of the peghead... something most people never see, but it's really ugly. The top surface of the guitar face also has some dimples... depressions in the spruce. With such a mirror-finish, these are pretty easy to spot in the right light. In this price range, I think Gibson Custom shop should be more careful. On the plus side, the sound is really special. I added a walrus ivory bridge to mine and it is heavenly-rich with harmonics. Got rid of the cheesy bridge pins and replaced them with some nice sold-rosewood replacements. It's a great guitar... If you can accept less-than-perfection in the finish details, you'll probably enjoy it for a lifetime.
