OVERVIEW

A European collector's classic returns after 23 years.

Serious guitarists worldwide are jazzed about the reintroduction of the Hagstrom Super Swede, especially at such an amazingly low price. Brilliant craftsmanship is evident in every detail of the mahogany body with carved maple top, flamed maple veneer, set mahogany neck, and bound Resinator fretboard with pearl block inlays. The queen of the Hagstrom line, the Super Swede sports Custom '58 humbuckers with thick, rich bottom end and warm clarity on top plus coil splitting for single-coil sounds.

H-Expander Truss Rod
All Hagstrom guitars feature our revolutionary patented H-Expander truss rod. Providing tension at either end and running the entire length of the neck, the rigid yet lightweight alloy truss rod allows for very low action and a thin neck, earning us our reputation as the "Fastest Neck on the Planet."

Resinator Fretboard
Yet another Hagstrom exclusive, the Resinator Fretboard is an extraordinary, homogeneous wood composite that maintains a strong fundamental harmonic and eliminates wolf tones. Resinator Fretboards offer the articulate sound of high quality ebony but with more consistency and durability. Silky smooth, reliable, and fast, the Hagstrom neck is a guitarist's dream come true.

Yes it is made in china but it is well made.I have a Gibson standard as well so I can compare the two of them. My Hagstrom is as well made as the Gibson and looks nicer due to the inlay at the headstock. The neck is very smooth and very fast. The pickups are very well made and the versatility is quite amazing due to the single coil capability. Overall I like my Hagstrom as much as my Gibson and I think that in terms of quality they are equivalent except that the Hagstrom is a fraction of the price of the Gibson. Nevertheless in terms of sound they have a different personality and the Hagstrom is very enjoyable with great versatility with sound on a darker style. If you want to emulate a Gibson, don't, the hagstrom is a guitar of its own that can compete against any American made $2000 guitars

I bought the original. It had a good deal for fret buzz on the low e string. It went back to Hagstrom for an exchange. The replacement had a black pick guard and pickup surrounds versus the aged white, and had the same fret buzz. The second replacements, again had black trim, and a loud hum.....it went back, the third replace came with a rattle in the body..it had a loose nut inside. The fourth replacement came with the off with trim. I was once again take aback by the guitar's beauty. Just several months later, the fret buzz is worse than ever.

A sound unlike any other

Comments about Hagstrom Super Swede Electric Guitar:

I traded a few pedals for the Black Super Swede, and when I first opened it, I found the sound that I had been looking for. If you are looking for a Les Paul copy, this is not your guitar. It has a very dark sound, even with 8 and 8.7 ohm pickups, that can be best compared to the British sound. Many people compare the coil tapped sound to that of a Strat, but I think it sounds most like a P-90, because of the metal coil covers. I gave this a 4 for features because the regular Swede has a switch for low and high pass filters, which I really would have liked on this guitar.I gave this a 4.5 for quality because it has a polyurthane coating, which is standard in this price range, but all other features on this guitar are comparable to a reissue strat or les paul class instrument. People often comment on how beautiful this looks, and their eyes light up when they hear how it sounds. The cream coloring is much darker in life than it looks in the picture, and it makes it look very vintage. Overall, this is a fantastic instrument, and very unique.

Comments about Hagstrom Super Swede Electric Guitar:

I play for the band Tripping Icarus. I've heard all my life of a guitarists defining sound but never understood it. This guitar gives me a defining sound. It's deep, dark, heavy, but also light and sparkly. You can get any sound you need from it. It came set up, ready to play, I haven't changed a thing but the strings since I bought it.

Comments about Hagstrom Super Swede Electric Guitar:

This guitar is a dirty little secret that I hope stays this way so the price doesn't get jacked up. Personally, it's one of the best guitars i've played. There are no issues with the one I recieved. I only bought it new because there are no dealers or stores where there would be a used one locally. I have had no issues with it other than specific ones that are limited to my own preference. I play with extremely low action and anything lower than about 1/8" will cause some buzz past the 14th fret (which is pretty normal for most guitars w/o trimmed nuts. The neck is thinner and the fretboard is more narrow than most guitars so it was a bit of getting used to. The guitar definately has it's own personality. It is a really sturdy guitar and everything about it is simple and to the point and just begs to be abused. I would love to recommend this to someone but I would prefer if the prices stay where they are for them.

    Epiphone Les Paul Killer!

Comments about Hagstrom Super Swede Electric Guitar:

The guitar is very heavy but that is where it gets the incredible tone and sustain. Don't buy it if you are on the frail side.If you want a beautiful, high quality Les Paul style guitar - this is your Baby!
Incredible bite, growl, and sustain! The neck feels just right and is easy to chord and bend strings.
The neck is super strong and the tuners are perfect. Stays in tune! I could not find any cosmetic flaws in the finish or other quality issues in the guitar.
Great value considering the incredible finish and coil taps for tonal selection. The resonator fingerboard works as advertised - super sustain. Extremely well made guitar!

I own an Epiphone Les Paul and by far prefer this guitar over it.

    Opinions?

    By CNote77

    from Maine

Comments about Hagstrom Super Swede Electric Guitar:

Hi guys! I have read alot of good reviews on this site and on the Net about this guitar. I was looking for a decent guitar at a reasonable price and thought this fit the bill. I was in a working band 10 years ago but have since 'settled down' - I want to pick up my rocking ways again. The Super Swede sounded and played great when I got it but about a month in I had terrible fret buzz. I had the guitar professionally set-up and some frets resurfaced. It played well for about a week and then the neck started rattling. Must have been a structural defect. Hagstrom was great and sent me a replacement. Immediately I discovered that the volume control for the neck pick-up didn't work. As soon as I manipulated it the sound cut off completely. Additionally, whenever I flipped to the neck position the pick-up had alot of static...like a short-out or something. I am waiting for guitar three. Just wondering if anyone else is having problems or am I just having bad luck. Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks!

    A Well-Crafted Instrument

    By Tiny Hands

    from WOODBRIDGE, VA

Comments about Hagstrom Super Swede Electric Guitar:

I just received this yesterday from Musician's Friend. This is a well-crafted electric guitar. It's made in China but just looking at the instrument, you know Hagstrom is keeping a close eye on it's quality control. The finish is top-notch, the hardware is well made. Frets that used to be sharp at the edges back when the Hagstroms were first reissued are now gone. The sound is probably the best humbucking sound for a solid-body I have ever heard in my life. It's full-bodied, very rounded (according to my wife), and thick. I've been playing for 30 years and I own quality high-end guitars but this Hagstrom beats them all, in terms of price, quality, and sound. The neck is fast. The Hagstrom is much heavier than a Gibson LP. It is HEAVY. Go get this guitar. You won't regret it. Don't let the country of manufacture scare you. This is a well-made guitar. You will love it. Trust me on this. Go on...press that Add to Cart button.

Comments about Hagstrom Super Swede Electric Guitar:

I have the select super swede in dirty blonde and the guitar is a great value. The coil tap switch is a great feature and lets you switch from bright clean chords to overdrive with the flip of the switch. The pickups are quality so no need to switch them out at all. The guitar is heavy like the LP but are a 25.5 scale line the Strat. Nothing bad to say at all about this guitar. It is made in China but they don't press out as many like the Epi LP. If you are looking for a LP type guitar this one is light years ahead of the EPI no doubt

    Buzz!

    By Anonymous

    from Undisclosed

Comments about Hagstrom Super Swede Electric Guitar:

A beautiful guitar that I loved immediately. I had been away from the guitar for quite a while and was looking for a decent guitar at a decent price. For my purposes the Super Swede was a great find. I picked up a 30W Vox amplifier and lovd the sound. BUT the fret buzz is starting to get me down which is dissappointing because I love this axe. It is starting to sound more like a sitar than a guitar. If I tune down at all to an open G or dropped D it sounds like I'm playiing a flight of bumblebees. I am sending it back and hope the exchange will make me happy.

I had been shopping for a Les Paul for 6 months and stumbled onto the name Hagstrom. Thank goodness for that. I went to a guitar shop and brought a Gibson, Epiphone and the Hagstrom Super Swede into the sound check room. Take a guess which I preferred.Sound, feel, quality and best of all price, are great! Check out their website for additional specs and information. My next purchase may be one of the Ultralux XL5's.

Comments about Hagstrom Super Swede Electric Guitar:

This guitar is amazing. When your telling people about it, they will say "what the hell is a hagstrom," because its not a popular guitar. But when they hear you play it makes them wish they had it. When you play this undistorted you get very clean sound. the only complaint I have is the single cutaway

i bought this guitar about 2 months ago, and i havent played my stratocaster since. the first time i ever opened the case, i was amazed at how beautiful it was. the top is stunning in cherry burst. i plugged it in right away and i loved the sound of it. its very versatile. the only thing i dont like about this guitar is that it will not stay in tune. but thats a simple fix, ill just throw grover imperials on it. other than that its great. i only paid $350 for it on ebay, and its amazing value. i would definitely recommend trying this guitar. i can almost guarantee anyone can find a sound they like.

New Super Swede vs The Original 1979

Comments about Hagstrom Super Swede Electric Guitar:

I now have both The tap is 2 posisition rather than 3 The Original had No Zero fret and a Gibson style bridge. The New one does not have the Heavy Maple Body, even with these changes I can still get a better sound that my Les Paul Supreme. What a wack for the price It's awesome! So much for paying for a Name not a guitar. I goes with me on Gigs and the Paul stays at home.

    Ask me a question

Comments about Hagstrom Super Swede Electric Guitar:

I have wanted a Swede ever since Larry Corryell used one in the 70's when he played with his llth House Band. I have Les Pauls, Fenders, a Gretsch Brian Setzer Nashville, Martins and assorted other less expensive guitars. I have spent my musical life in search of the ideal tone. I bought a Super Swede from another internet vendor. The guitar arrived almost perfectly tuned and was cosmetically perfect. It's weight exceeds that of my LP Standard, but the contoured back makes it very comfortable. Stays in tune, sounds great..much like a Les Paul. The Coil tapping feature gets you a Fender-like sound, but seems to have significantly lower volume..I'll have to see how this works in a gig situation. The neck and fingerboard profile are outstanding. Intonation perfect...ends of frets could be a bit smoother, but I've seen worse. Absolutely beautiful tone in all pickup settings/combinations. Amazing for a guitar that is 1/4 the cost of an LP. Really a great deal..I consider this guitar the equal of my LP, Gretsch, Strats etc. Buy one and you won't regret it. Case is well made also. Rock on!

great guitar, especially for the cash

    By Anonymous

Comments about Hagstrom Super Swede Electric Guitar:

I got the super swede about a week ago and I love. I have the amber sunburst (very similar to Gibson's finish of the same name) and it is a beauty. The neck is as fast as the description says, and is as solid as a rock becuase of the H trusse rod. The fretboard is super smooth and the action was low but had no buzz right out of the box. The Pups sound great and the coil tap gives you a wider variety of sounds. There are a few bad things about the guitar I got. The pickguard edge closest to the pups was rough/unfinished. The tone knob for the bridge isnt totally attached and kind of comes up. The last thing I have noticed was the bing and nut dont quite match up on the low E side of the neck. these aren't really that big of a deal but they bring the overall quality down.In the end I think this is a great guitar for an intermediate player like me. The wood is good, the pickups sound great, and the thing plays like a dream. It doesn't have the quality of a gibson lp or american fender, but it costs half as much. Overall its a great guitar for the money.

    An Awesome Axe

    By Steve Frandsen

    from Plano, TX

Comments about Hagstrom Super Swede Electric Guitar:

I've owned this axe since 1986. It's been a great bargain for a beautiful guitar. I actually got it slightly used. The only minor problem is the nut fell off when I recently restrung it but it's over 21 years old and glue dries out. I only gave it a 9 on quality as one tone control knob is slightly off kilter - I'm being really picky here. It's got a great neck, never any fret buzz, very fast, and pretty too with the dark wood and inlays. The coil tap gives you free additional sounds over a standard Les Paul. The tuning heads look and are wonderful - they just don't fit the plastic winder that well - no big deal. The tailpiece and bridge are both high quality. Since I'm not a great player despite the years, I have never done my Super Swede justice. I'd pay to hear Jimmy Page put it through the wringer!

Comments about Hagstrom Super Swede Electric Guitar:

CRAFTMANSHIP: At first I was skeptical due to its assembly and/or construction being from China. However, I was impressed on the craftmanship upon examination. (I am critical on craftmanship and the appearance is beautiful. (I used to be a woodworker so I like to think of myself somewhat knowledgeable on the craft. Anyway, you will not be disappointed in its craftsmanship.COMPONENTS: The surface seems to be constructed from two pieces and in my judgment a softwood. (I am not sure why the two pieces) It looks like they tried to match the grain together as best as they could which is really difficult when fusing two parts into one. The back and neck seem to be of the same wood (my guess is mahogany) The back looks like one piece in its construction.HARDWARE: The tuners are precise. The knobs are neither tight nor loose when turning. The hardware is nicely secured with the exemption of the plug in (this was quickly remedied with tightening it down securely). The fretbars in their height is generous in my opinion and may slow the sliding fingers effect. The inlays are a nice cosmetic touch but I would have combined a couple of shades instead of predominately white. The pickguard is a gloss black. I think a nice shade of red and yellow would compliment the whole appearance to the instrument.SOUND: Warm, subdued and sustainment qualities. Toggle gives it kick. Pickups are subtle yet distinctive.OVERALL: I am not dissapointed and I dont think you will be either.
