OVERVIEW

One of Martin's favorites given a special torrefaction process to give you a more broken-in look and tone right out the box.

This exclusive Custom HD-28 VTS acoustic dreadnought couples classic sound with modern playability and craftsmanship. This guitar was designed to target the highly-collectible vintage sound and tone of Martin’s Golden Era, the 1930s. As many of you know, this time period produced the finest steel string acoustic guitars in the world. Martin guitars from the 1930s are considered by many to be a benchmark for the acoustic steel string guitar. Today, if you could find one, you would pay anywhere from $100K to $400K.

However, with Martin’s revolutionary Vintage Tone System, a proprietary temperature aging process, they are able to target the sound of their vintage acoustic guitars within a decade. Martin has honed this process by benchmarking some of the finest examples of their 182-year history, found in their Nazareth, PA museum. Once they have aged the top to the correct moisture content and look of the period, it is ready to be placed on only the finest custom and authentic models.

With the custom HD-28 VTS, they selected a premium-grade of Sitka spruce for the top, and temperature age it to target the sound of the 1930s. They then combined this VTS top with the precision and playability of a modern HD-28 to create a dreadnought guitar that has an extraordinary sound, with the playability of modern precision and technology. The HD-28 VTS has a clear, defined treble and midrange tone, with a very balanced, punchy bottom end. .

USA-made in Nazareth, PA.
Comes with 640 molded case.

I ordered this guitar in late July and still can not claim to have in my possession as of yet. The sound of the guitar is awesome, wonderful rich tone. The first guitar I received had scratches on the back, at least 20 or more light scratches, so I returned it, then musicians friend sent me the same guitar again, only it appeared someone tried to buff out scratches since they appeared less visible but scratches still there non the less. The reason I know it was the same instrument was I took pic of serial number and I still had the return label which also had serial number. I resent same guitar back and then I was sent another guitar this time it was a different one but it had the pick guard plastic overlay removed already and there were several areas on the sides of the guitar that looked as if though the stain was not applied on the guitar, and it was under the top seal finish so there is no way to correct it. Currently I am still waiting on a new one to be shipped. No one at musicians friend had offered to see if a different model would be acceptable for all the inconvenience. I guess I will wait to see what happens next, whatever happens I will do a follow up review to see if musicians friend will redeem themselves.

Comments about Martin Custom HD-28 VTS Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I have been a M.F. customer since the late 70"s, so YES I Like the company. I was sold a returned product that had slight damage. Not Happy. I did strum it before I returned it, and comparing my other Martins and Gibson J-45 Custom, it sounded very cheap, heavy upper midrangey, thus the reason for the previous customer returning it I'm sure. They allowed me to return it, I appreciate that. I have written several reviews about this and they never print them so I don't expect to see this one. However, if you are reviewing this to see if you want to print it, its not honest to leave out negative reviews, and we musicians talk amongst ourselves. There are other places we can go.

Comments about Martin Custom HD-28 VTS Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

This guitar is one of the best guitars I have ever heard. I have played Taylor, Collings, Santa Cruz, and many other high end guitars. This Martin is as good if not better than anything I have played. I am a huge Taylor fan and do find the playability more stiff and physical than my Taylors. Partly because it requires a little bit of a different approach. I am getting calluses in slighty new positions and finding the guitar more physical to play over all but am getting used to it. The tone is just so sweet I can't stop playing it. Perhaps that's why I am more tired in my wrist and forearm when I put it down. Worth every penny. I found it difficult to play out of the box but had a local Martin service professional set it up to my liking and Now has better string action at 12th fret than my Taylor. Can't wait to play it out for its first gig.

Comments about Martin Custom HD-28 VTS Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I played this for the last two weeks before reviewing. It joins my collection of multple instruments, both vintage and modern, and has become my "go to" daily player. Fit, finish, and build... inside and out, is Custom Shop Martin. The sound is a brilliant , shimmering, rich classic Martin. It captivates your soul. The VTS concept certainly works for this guitar. I own and have played multiple vintage Martin guitars. Side by side with my all time favorite D35, this Custom HD28 VTS, holds its own... and them some.
My only quibble is this... This is advertised as a "Private Reserve" Custom, HD28, VTS . It comes with the CS 640 series case, The guitar should have come with a "build sheet" to complete the experience.

This guitar blows any other guitar I've ever played out of the water.
This guitar is very loud deep warm nothing like a mahogany guitar.
I'm very addicted to the sound of this guitar and the sustain.

I thought long and hard about getting a Martin D-28. I had long thought about a used one, that was ,"broken in ". As my other guitar have been well played for many years. But I decided on the HD VTS-28. After reading about the way the top is baked, to increase the tone. And straight out of the box it has beautiful tone. Construction is beautiful, no issues. Nothing bad too say, Great American made guitar! This guitar plays as well as any guitar I have ever played, and I've been playing for almost 50 years.

Comments about Martin Custom HD-28 VTS Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I love this guitar! I'm a bit of a guitar-a-holic, as I also have a Martin D17M, a Yamaha A3R and others. This guitar was great sounding right out of the box. I'm going to put bone bridge pegs in (as it seems to come with plastic ones). I've been trying different strings on it, and I'm now on the Martin MSP7200 SP Lifespan 92/8 Phosophor Bronze strings. They give it a nice sound without being "boomy." I have a Fishman Neobuster Humbucker pickup, which works well for temporary electric capacity for my HD 28 VTS. It's a beautiful, understated guitar with the only real decorations being the herringbone around the edges, but I bought it for it's tone, and it doesn't disappoint.

I was looking for a certain sound which I only found in older D-28's. This guitar has that resounding base and pure treble that I simply fell in love with. Straight out of the case it sounded like angels singing and it has continued to do so. It is everything I hoped for and better than I imagined. This guitar makes practicing a most wonderful pastime! My undying gratitude to the Martin engineers that developed VTS!
