I am a guitar repairman and had a customer bring one to me to set up. I was really surprised, first of all at the finish and the parts. I then decided to look the guitar up and look for specs. I also looked in YouTube and found where a guy spent more money for a bridge because he couldn't adjust the stock bridge down to improve the action. I looked at the low cost Epiphone SG's for comparison and realized that the tuners, bridge, pots, jack etc. were imported and the same on each guitar. The fret edges were as bad as any guitar I've every worked on. Please don't take this all wrong because I have worked on MANY quality Gibsons.....this model, at the price listed, is over priced.

Plain Mary Jane

By A ColumnOfFilesFromThe Right!

Comments about Gibson 2017 Firebird Zero Electric Guitar:

I dunno! I saw it at my local store and was attracted to the price tag, and that it was a Gibson. It sounded good, but looked unattractive and plain. I don't get why Gibson neglected to paint the neck; did it really make it cheaper by not painting the neck? Don't get me wrong, it feels fine and sounds okay; but I want to get excited by playing a Gibson, and this guitar is not exciting. It's just like owning a Gibson just because it's a Gibson. There are much better and more exciting guitars from G&L, ESP LTD, Dean, and even Epiphone at this price tag that are made overseas.

Great Lil' US Built Axe for the Money

Comments about Gibson 2017 Firebird Zero Electric Guitar:

Where to start. Loved this axe right off the wall. Great acoustic qualities. Easy on the shoulder with very good strap balance. 3 days later realized it needed some upgrades to truly live up to the Gibson logo on the headstock. I use a '65 Blackface Deluxe at low volumes, no pedals, and let the gear do their thing... This Bird fell short of what I expect. After a set of Gotoh nickle tuners, lightening bar bridge w/lags & studs, DR Pure Blues 11s, nickle covered P94 (neck), nickle covered 498 (bridge), CTS 300K linear pots, .002 Panasonic poly film cap as a treble bleed, .022 Orange Drop 100v cap for tone, vintage shielded wiring, Schaller mushroom head strap buttons, fret ends groomed, enlarge the side markers, shellac soak & buff the fret board, wet sand & buff the satin neck finish, wet sand & buff that stupid looking gloss from the body finish, Top hat knobs with pointers... This axe has the look & snap you'd expect from a neck thru Bird. Very sweet voice. Solid & stable on stage. I still want to knock some height & put a shoulder only crown on the frets. I'll put an amber toner on the neck at the same time. That can wait until a bit more of a break-in period. Still have less then 750. in it & it sounds, looks & plays like a million. How great a deal is that?

I have purchased many guitars, most are good and some not so good, this one is one that Gibson should be ashamed to have their name on, imo.
At least they chose the right name for it; ZERO!

Comments about Gibson 2017 Firebird Zero Electric Guitar:

What a find! I've receive Musician's Friend catalog for years! And I always flip pass the Gibson page, for the fact I can never afford one. This previous issue featured the Gibson Firebird Zero at a very affordable price! I ordered one, and received it rather quickly, and right out of the box it's amazing! The action is incredible, the intonation is already set, ready to go! The folks at Gibson did not miss a thing! Just to own a piece of pure Americana at an affordable price is priceless!

      Good guitar, needs tweaking

      By Nathan

      from RKansas

Comments about Gibson 2017 Firebird Zero Electric Guitar:

Have owned Gibsons from nearly every era, starting with a 1938 L-00, 1950's ES's, 1960's L-0s, 1970's (SGs, LPs, LP Customs, L-5s), 1980's LPs, 1990s (LPs, SGs, ES), and All sorts from the last 2 decades, including custom shop. That beings said, this is my first "Firebird". The bridge is horrible. You need to have it lower to the body for the action to be low. Because it is not a tight fit on the posts, the bridge is slightly angled. This combination causes the bridge to dig into the finish and wood if you want low, smooth action. I thought about a replacement bridge, but came up with a cheap solution. I put a thin, plastic sheet shim under the front of the bridge. Lowered the action, prevents damage. Nevertheless, this is a HUGE mistake for a brand new model. The pickups sound good and crisp. The balance and feel are great. I like the Gold Mist finish. Would like it if the pickguard was black and had the Firebird on it, but you know. That all being said. For the price, you can't really go wrong for a full size USA made Gibson. You just can't. I hope they fix the bridge issue.

Comments about Gibson 2017 Firebird Zero Electric Guitar:

This is a beautiful guitar, and it was rarin' to go right out of the box. Need nothing but a slight tuning. Killer sound from the excellent pickups and with a little experimentation, you will enjoy rock, heavy metal... even country and jazz sounds are easy to evoke from the Zero. My only disappointment was that the color is less blue than it appeared on my computer screen, and frankly, the finish is not nearly up to Gibson standards. That's the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5. But take it out for a few good gigs and none of that will matter at all.

Really nice to have American made goods because... they're GOOD. The Firebird Zero especially. Had to tweak the neck and install some Les Paul strings, but that was expected. Feels a little light, but I'm comparing it to my Les Paul. Love the color and quality of finish. All the joints are TIGHT and crisp looking. Thank you Gibson, for keeping it in the states!

Comments about Gibson 2017 Firebird Zero Electric Guitar:

Horrible! This is such a wasted effort by GIBSON to even produce this guitar. I went through three units from MF and each unit had substantial faults. I bought a Blackberry, Pellham Blue and a Faded Pellham Blue unit.

#1: Paint blemishes...........each unit had light and dark rough areas from poor paint work. There was impressions in the paint from being handled prior to curing.
#2: Body routing...........was not consistent and very uneven around the entire perimeter.
#3: Low output pickups..........The DS-C pickups measured just 7.25ohm across all three units I had. The bridge and neck pups are the same. They are stamped GIBSON on the underside but have a paper sticker displaying a different model number for each. They are exactly the same!
#4: Improper pickup sizing..........the pups are designed as a one size fits all method which means they all measure exactly 48mm's pole spacing, yet the bridge spacing is 52mm's. This does not allow for correct string oscillation (and poor alignment).
#5: Poor tuners.........the tuners are 14-1 ratio and do not hold tuning well. I tried down tuning and they still had to be retuned after several minutes.
#6: Cheap Head-stock design.........it's a piece of plastic laminated to the wood (had poor routing on the edges). The truss rod cover is painted logo, not embossed.
#7: Broken components..........one of the units came with a defective 3-way switch and another had screws falling out of the pick guard plastic. How does that get past QC Gibson?
#8: Fret boards were unfinished.........one unit had sanding dust still one it and another looked as though it was never finished out. It was as rough as an old rustic barn wall. The frets weren't dressed properly either.
#9: Improper balance........neck dives because GIBSON routed out TOO MUCH of the body cavity for the electronics. Hint to GIBSON = Less is More.
#10: High action.........could not be resolved.
      #11: Cheap metal components.

      By Marcus

      from Utah

Comments about Gibson 2017 Firebird Zero Electric Guitar:

When I played it initially it wasn't set up too bad. The fret ends were sharp but that's something that can be fixed. The reason I purchased it was because of the sound. It's got a mid woody "sg" kind of tone. Not exactly sg but still sounds great. The frets though.. are you sitting down? The overall surface of the frets are great, it's the cheese grater/lawn mower blade ends that are bad. Otherwise an amazing buy for a great sounding guitar. Get it now for the price, then get the fret ends worked on. Use a 15 or 20 percent of coupon, then use the remainder for set up and you've got an awesome guitar.

      Cons

      Best Uses

      • As a second guitar mostly........

Comments about Gibson 2017 Firebird Zero Electric Guitar:

I saw mine hanging behind the counter at my local GC and the price attracted me to try it out. I plugged it into a '65 Deluxe reissue as that's what I gig with and was instantly impressed. It played great right out of the box and the tone was clear and even... I'm mainly a Tele player but feel the need for a humbucker equipped guitar for some tunes as I gig three nights a week and my Tele sounds a little think on some rock, western swing or jazzy things. I've been taking my Les Paul along for those tunes but since I've had this guitar it's been filling that need just fine. My gigs are probably more country orientated than anything else and this guitar actually has the twang factor going for it. I've had it modified with two mini toggle switches activating a phase switch and a coil tap on the bridge pickup.... I took it to my Monday night gig this week as my only guitar and it never let me down on any style we played even the Bluegrass tunes........ I don't see anything wrong with the bridge either, works fine for me.....JH in Va.

Never has a guitar had a more fitting name than the Gibson Firebird ZERO, it is EXACTLY that a big fat Zero. This guitar is a Prime example of why Gibson is on the verge of going under, you can point the finger at TWO men CEO & Chairman Henry Juszkiewicz and President David H. Berryman. Well that's not entirely true you can add every member on the Board of Directors past & present since 2006, personally I think it started much earlier. It's sad to thing some poor Tree gave it's life for this monstrosity but Fret not...(get it FRET not) you're not alone Firebird Zero your even uglier older brother "Firebird X" joins you on a evrr growing Loooong list of Failures. Gibson was so ashamed of the Firebird X that they bought back all the unsold ones which were a lot, money well spent Gibson. Amazing how 2 individuals can take a Golden Goose and turn it into a Dodo.

Comments about Gibson 2017 Firebird Zero Electric Guitar:

Sounds great and much different than my favorite stratocaster. Needs a little fret work but otherwise I'll keep playing it before changing anything else. As of now it plays well, setup is pretty good, and it stays in tune. The weight issue is a non-issue... just get a good leather strap and the neck/head does not drop at all. Worth full price??? Probably not, but if you get it on sale like I did it is well worth it.

The strings on the guitar were only for looks, not even a full wrap. I wish I had taken a picture. Other than that the Guitar is fine after lowering the bridge a bit and setting the intonation and changing the strings of course which is a breeze. I got the stupid deal of the day so even the small issues are nothing.

I think this is a great bang for you buck USA Gibson guitar. The only 'con', if you can call it a 'con' is the profile of the bridge could be a hair shorter. I got mine all set up nice action wise, intonation, etc, but, ya, the bridge profile could be a little shorter. However, keep in mind many people pay far more money for guitars and they still swap out the bridges, tuners, pickups, etc...

I bought this guitar because I love odd guitars that are different plus it had a good price. I had played one at a store and it sounded and played great. Unfortunately when I got mine, It did not. The intonation has been off since I bought it and when I got it fixed, it unfixed itself later that same day. I almost barely play it until I can get it fixed just because I am that disappointed with the sound.

I really like this guitar. It looks and feels great, which is expected from Gibson. One of its selling points for me is its thin body that feels really good when playing live.
