The perfect guitar if you want that Strat sound and PRS quality

By Darren Nelson

from Colorado

Comments about PRS 305 with Maple Neck Electric Guitar:

This guitar plays itself with the rigth setup. Be sure and have a luthier set it up right for your style.
I have been playing Paul Reed Smith (PRS) guitars for over 20 years. I love the way they feel and how easy they are to play. I bought the 305 model for several reasons. Number one is for the new 513 single coil pickups. They may say 305 pickups, but the word from the factory is they are the same as the much more expensive 513 model. I LOVE the sound of a good Stratocaster, with those bright bluesy tones that you can only get from a single coil pickup. All the PRS guitars I have owned prior have all had humbucker pickups, and I have always had to tweak my Mesa Boogie amp and my Boss pedals to get a nice Strat sound out of them. But these pickups give you that classic Strat sound right out of the box. All 5 positions sound incredible. With the humbucker pickups I would only ever use 2 positions, but each one of the 5 positions on this guitar sound exceptional. Surprisingly, I found the best fat Strat lead sound on position 3 and 4 (middle and middle/neck). If you want more variety, then I suggest you look at the 513 model, which will give you 13 different tone options.

The number two reason I bought this guitar is for the maple neck. I like the feel of a maple neck over the dark wood necks that most other PRS guitars use. And there is a good reason: This neck has VERY little varnish on it, which I think makes it smoother an easier to slide up and down the neck (especially when you are sweating on stage). It reminds me of the Indian rosewood necks that you can only get on special McCarty and 513 models. I prefer the feel of those unvarnished necks. And with the maple neck you will never need to apply oil to keep it lubricated.
.I also tested the sustain on this guitar using a tuner, hitting a string and seeing how long the tuner registers the note. It was an impressive 26 seconds. And that was before I did any adjustments on it
Some things to keep in mind if you buy this guitar. One is that the factory setup needed work. I had to adjust the height of all 3 pickups to get a level sound that doesn’t change volume when going from one position to another. Also, the action was WAY too high when I got it, just over 1/8” above the frets. I adjusted it down to 1/16”, added some EB Super Slinky strings and now this guitar plays like a dream!
Bottom line, if you love the feel of a PRS guitar but want the sound of a Stratocaster, this is the perfect guitar for you. It took 25 years, but PRS has finally come out with the perfect guitar for a player like me.

Perfect Intonation

By PrsRocks

Comments about PRS 305 with Maple Neck Electric Guitar:

This is a true PRS, beautiful finish, perfect neck, great tone. Much more worth the value than a Gibson. You can get very Stratty sounds out of it, but also more humbucker sounding tones as well. The intonation is pristine....the best I have ever played.
