The potent hum-sing-hum pickup combo make this axe a contender.

This hum-single-hum guitar delivers the beauty and brightness of a maple top with a wide array of tonal possibilities due to the push/pull control and 5-way blade switch. This PRS Special electric guitar is loaded with covered sweet sounding vintage style 245 humbucking pickups. These pickups and their placement under the strings give the Special a voice that is classic, eminently recordable and gig ready. Comments about PRS SPECIAL with Wide Fat Neck and Birds Electric Guitar:

Paul Reed Smith Special with Wide Fat Neck and Birds Electric GuitarThere is not one part of this guitar that isn't first class, as one would expect for the price. Here's the list and my impressions:The tuners and nut are the best I've experienced. No slipping. No sticking. Stays in tune more or less forever. The tremolo is the best I've played. Wang it over and over and it doesn't lose tune. On most tremolo equipped gutars I take the bar off unless I specifically need it. I won't have to do that with this. The intonation is uncanny. I'm used to guitars (Gibson, Godin, Fender) with very good intonation. I haven't taken an oscilloscope to it but every note up to the high teens is spot on.This is a delight to play. The stock setup suits me well. The neck shape feels invisible, that is I just don't notice it because playing feels completely natural. The weight and balance of the guitar is very low fatigue. The pickups and electronics are lovely. You have access to 9 basic pickup configurations (coil splitting). Not all are ones that I would use (extreme twang that you can get with the bridge pickup doesn't figure in my playing.). The pickup outputs are fairly hot, very low noise, even from the SC or coil split HBs, and even from position to position. Add in the excellent sustain of the body and I've been able to get pretty much any tone I want. (Been playing through Digitech rack processor, Boss GT-PRO, Tech 21 PSA-1.1, out to a Tech 21 PW-60/112 or an Audiofire 4 for recording in Logic.)Cosmetically its gorgeous (violin amber burst). No lapses in fit or finish are detectable. In sum this is a versatile instrument that makes me want to play. It's a bit pricey even considering how superb it is, but compared to high end Gibsons for example, It's a steal (it's also better than any Gibson I've played, in versatility, intonation, signal quality). If you can afford one, buy one and cherish it by playing it a lot.
