Comments about Yamaha FG820 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I've owned and played regularly an fg720s and love it. I have other more expensive guitars but learn new songs on the Fg and once I have it down I bring out the expensive ones. So, I had to get the 820 to see what the fuss was about. I thought that there is no way that it would compare to my 6 year played in upgraded 720. The 820 arrived, I tuned it with stock strings still on, and was blown away! The bass is deeper and louder and resonates longer. I thought my 720 had good bass but it decays much quicker. The 820 is very "Martin like". The strings are very balanced across the spectrum. Also the 820 is noticeably louder than the 720. I'll be looking for a new home for my 720 as can't seem to stop playing the 820. The sound is full rich and loud and I can't wait to see what it'll sound like in a year as my 720 improved greatly in the time I've owned it. Great for learning, practicing, or taking to the fire or the party. This is a guitar that I would immediately replace if lost, my others I'd probably look around first....

Comments about Yamaha FG820 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

This thing sounded unbelievable out of the box. Booming bass, clear midrange and treble. Sounds better and more "Martin"y than a lot of Martins I've played costing hundreds more. The only downside is that the sound rapidly diminishes as strings go dead. Really steep downward curve on the sound/dead string axis. But string it up with new strings and fall in love all over again. Well built and beautiful guitar

Comments about Yamaha FG820 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I've played guitar for 45 years, and have also become an amateur luthier to better set up my guitars. I prefer as low an action, without buzz, as I can achieve. Most guitar's action can be brought to the 1.5-2mm height at the 12th fret, but many also require some fret-filing to get rid of high frets that buzz. This Yamaha only needed a new bone nut, sanded down at the appropriate angle to the nut/neck. All frets are perfect, and though they undoubtedly will shift over time (humidity, age & playing-in) only my Taylor 714CE allowed me to achieve perfect action without any fret adjustments. That speaks volumes about Yamaha's dedication to quality-control, even for inexpensive instruments.

The blue color is even better than Musician's Friend website images and the tone is evenly balanced between bass, mid-range and treble. Heck, even the strings are great-sounding (I think an 80-20 bronze, perhaps D'Addario). I added some brass bridge-pins as I like their conduction of sound better, and the guitar is equally good at heavy strumming and finger-style ( a rare capability for any price-range guitar).

Almost anybody can sand down this guitar's bridge saddle and have a perfect-playing instrument, that has great sound and beautiful visual appeal. I can honestly say it sounds as good as my 18 year-old Taylor, and while it may not last as long (thought I'm betting it will) it is a great every-day practice instrument, that saves the frets on my Taylor for live performances.

I choose to not get a guitar with a cut-out, as I feel there is a loss of tone, and didn't want to pay for extra electronics. My hope was that this would translate into more of the money ending up in good quality, and I'm extremely please that this is the case with the Yamaha FG 820. I have already ordered an inexpensive LR-Baggs Anthem knock-off from Amazon that I have used in other guitars. This will allow me to use the Yamaha on-stage as well. Simply put, I am extremely pleased!
