Ibanez Munky Electric Guitars
For two solid decades, James "Munky" Shaffer has been teaming up with Ibanez to put 7-string guitars through their paces. It's no surprise: after all, he was part of the generation inspired by Steve Vai, and even got his start on a Universe - the original Vai-Ibanez 7-string collaboration. Today, he's got a line of signature Ibanez Munky electric guitars all his own, and with one of these instruments in your hands, you'll be well on your way to re-creating Munky's churning 7-string style, or to coming up with a sound that's all your own. The versatility you get out of that seventh string has a lot of musical potential to offer, so there's plenty of room to experiment with a Munky guitar.
There are two models to choose from: the standard APEX20 Munky Signature Series 7-String Electric Guitar, and the Prestige Series APEX200. Both of these instruments come loaded with DiMarzio Blaze pickups, designed to make the most of the 7-string design by emphasizing treble and bass with outstanding 7th-string clarity. They're also both equipped with rosewood fingerboards and ship with whole step-down factory tuning - but that's where the similarities end, and choosing the best Munky axe for your tastes depends on what you prefer from the other stats.
For example, the APEX20 pairs a basswood body with a 3-piece maple neck, while the Prestige model joins alder with a 5-piece maple/wenge affair. The bridge on the standard model is a Gibraltar Standard II-7, versus the Lo-Pro Edge 7 on the APEX200. And of course, being a Prestige model, the 200 can also boast the highest tier of Ibanez craftsmanship. Even with these differences, they're both amazing instruments and the choice is really a matter of preference (or budget). Either of the Ibanez Munky electric guitars is a solid choice, so don't sweat the small stuff - just think about which one is right for your needs, and you'll be on the right track!
