Of all the luthiers in the world, none are better-rounded than Gibson. Even before they became a driving force behind the development of the electric guitar as we know it today, Gibson was building world-class acoustic guitars and setting the standard for that instrument as well. The company was originally founded in 1902 and became famous within a few decades for inventing the archtop guitar. By the 1930s, they were building flat-top acoustics, and it's from those vintage pre-war designs that today's J-29 guitars are derived. Today, well after Gibson's centennial, they're staying faithful to their traditions with a current lineup as impressive as anything they built in their early days.

The main bragging right of J-29 guitars is their winning combination of sitka spruce and rosewood, producing acoustic guitar tone that's second to none. The scalloped 1930s-style X-bracing pattern adds richness and depth, helping models like the Gibson J-29 Rosewood Acoustic-Electric Guitar to achieve a well-balanced and broad dynamic range suitable for any musical style. And being an acoustic-electric instrument, it's stage-ready in venues of any size using your favorite guitar amp, backend sound system or a combination of the two.

To get your hands on a recent version of this iconic instrument, check out the Gibson 2016 J-29 Slope Shoulder Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar. Like all J-29s, it's based on a body of solid rosewood and sitka. But a heap of new updates were added with the 2016 model, including a revised truss rod cover, L.R. Baggs Element VTC preamp system, refined fingerboard edge and even an upgrade in the finish quality. Making these kinds of subtle improvements year-over-year is exactly how Gibson manages to produce guitars that meet modern standards for playability while remaining true to their heritage.

As cliché as it may seem, Gibson's J-29 guitars really are great examples of instruments built by players, for players. These guitars are designed to handle any performance, even the most demanding professional gigs - and that means they're made with the passion and craftsmanship you would expect from one of Gibson's flagship models. So whether you're a pro yourself, or simply a recreational player with high standards, a J-29 is always a solid choice to get amazing acoustic sound.
