OVERVIEW

(Open Box) The sound and feel of a grand piano, in a smaller digital form.

The PX-780 is a stylish digital piano from Casio's Privia line that has a look as classy as its sound. The PX-780 has the grand piano sounds that you're looking for, plus 250 built-in tones with split and layer, so you can get that big piano feel in a much smaller space. PIANO SOUND
The award winning grand piano sound in Privia has been dramatically improved. The new PX-780 utilizes more than three times the memory of the previous generation for a more natural piano tone. In addition, Casio's new proprietary sound source "AiR" (Acoustic and intelligent Resonator) provides unmatched realism and detail. This engine provides seamless dynamics for a remarkably expressive and powerful performance. For further realism a new Damper Resonance and Hammer Response simulator provides the rich sound of the strings when the sustain pedal is used.

KEY ACTION
The new PX-780 also features a new redesigned 88 note Tri-sensor scaled hammer action keyboard. This new action features new simulated Ebony and Ivory textured keys for an incredible feel and it's three sensors capture the dynamics of a performance with unparalleled speed and accuracy. To further enhance the experience, the action and the sound engine take into consideration the speed at which different sized hammers move inside acoustic grand relative to velocity the keys are pressed, this timing nuance provides the ultimate key to sound experience.

POWERFUL FEATURES
In additional to grand piano sounds, the PX-750 has many other instrument tones including strings, organs, electric pianos and bass. The PX-780 provides split and layer capability allowing you to play bass in your left hand and have two layered tones in your right. Duet mode splits the keyboard into two equal ranges, allowing student and teacher to use the piano simultaneously. A two track recorder can even record and playback your practice and performances. The matching keyboard cover, stand and pedal board make this a complete digital piano that is a welcome addition to any home d¨cor.

USB MIDI

This allows Privia to be used with Mac or Windows computers without the need for downloading drivers. Class Compliant USB MIDI also allows Privia digital pianos can also be used as a controller the Apple iPad simply with the use of Apple's Camera Connection Kit.

AIR SOUND SOURCE
To reproduce the sound of the finest acoustic grand pianos, the new Privia series features Casio's proprietary AiR (Acoustic and intelligent Resonator) processor. Comments about Casio Privia PX-780 88 Weighted Key Digital Piano:

I'm a semi-pro, but purchased this instrument strictly for home use. Definitely don't purchase it with stage expectations. Too heavy, and impossible to break down and set up, unless you only take the keyboard.

Some plusses: Nice piano, electric piano, and organ sounds. Nice look, and nice cover, so it's acceptable in a living room as furniture. Nice sound from the speakers, at least to the player. Nice to have all three pedals like a real acoustic. And its main selling point for me--a line input, so I can easily add a vocal mic and get a good idea of my piano/vocal mix without hooking up a separate mixer and running everything through it. But...

The negatives: My old, cheap Yamaha P-90 has about 16 sounds, all of them usable. This Casio has 250 or more, but 90% are junk. If, like me, you have no use for the quite extensive rhythm accompaniment offerings, stay away from this model. It's all just silliness to me, and if your playing is not super precise, you can easily set off the accompaniment in the middle of a tune. Most disappointing to me is the layer function. I like having a touch of strings behind the piano for a few tunes. Again, the old P-90 can get me just the right amount. Not so this Casio. Even at the lowest level, the layered strings are too loud. Also, there's no way to alter the decay and sustain, so they swell if your foor is on the pedal. If you're trying to end a song with strings fading out, forget it. There's one string setting, called "warm pad", that has a low enough default volume, that, if layered in to its minimum, is almost suitable, if you don't mind a pleasant but unrealistic tone. Instead of the hundreds of totally unusable sounds, an extra dozen string sounds, with different attacks, decays and sustains, sure would have been nice. Another minus is the variance offered in the chorus and reverb levels that you can add. There's four reverb levels, and I can barely hear the differences. Finally, the manual sucks.

Comments about Casio Privia PX-780 88 Weighted Key Digital Piano:

I'm pretty much a beginner at the piano. This digital piano is a perfect way to practice and learn how to play. Plus it feels like you're playing a real piano.

Comments about Casio Privia PX-780 88 Weighted Key Digital Piano:

I'm a 73-year old student of two years. This Casio plays as well as most of the pianos and keyboards I've tried. I like the feel of the weighted keys and that feel is consistent across the keyboard. The sound is good for home use, but for an auditorium or multipurpose room I think it would require a house amp. I use headphones (corded inexpensive Sony) most of the time and the sound is very good.

The Casio is equipped with a lot of extra features and functions. Getting to most of them is a pain and the manual isn't that helpful. Casio could use an expert on user interface and navigation if they really wanted to step up their game. My suggestion is, once you figure out the functions you want, make copious notes in the manual. You can store lots of different setups in "banks," but good notes are necessary to know what you did and how you did it.

As a piece of furniture the Casio is okay. It's black, it's matte finish and it's kind of unobtrusive with the keys covered.

I think the Casio PX-780 is a good choice for the beginner who has been playing long enough to know he or she will be playing for many years to come. It's also a good choice for the more experienced piano player who is looking for a versatile keyboard, but doesn't want to invest in a high-end professional keyboard or piano.
