Compact, unobtrusive, and designed for the modern world, the 88-key Korg SP-170 digital piano solidly delivers the essential elements of a piano: rich, vibrant sounds and an authentic grand piano feel. Styled to mimic an acoustic piano, the SP-170 boasts a simple and clean design that eliminates the need for a control panel. The built-in stereo sound system features two efficient speakers housed in a bass-reflex enclosure to deliver powerful sound. The KORG SP-170 is lightweight and easy to transport, making it an ideal electronic piano for concerts or for live use.

The KORG SP-170 digital piano features a duo of concert grand piano sounds, each lavishly recorded with meticulous care. In addition, the 88-note piano contains sounds such as electric piano, harpsichord, and organ are also provided, delivering a total of 10 premium sounds at your fingertips.

Faithfully reproduces an acoustic piano touch and feel:
KORG's Natural Weighted Hammer Action (NH) keyboard is accurately weighted like a traditional piano, with a heavier touch in the lower ranges that becomes progressively lighter in the higher registers. 3 levels of Key Touch Control allow the keyboard response to be matched to nearly any playing style, preserving all of the subtle expression of the original performance.

Self-contained sound system:
Inside the compact KORG SP-170 keyboard is a full stereo sound system. The clean-sounding stereo amplifier feeds power to a pair of full-range oval speakers. The speakers are housed in an internal bass-reflex cabinet, resulting is a well-defined, robust, and dynamic sound.

Reverb and chorus effects:
Individually selectable Reverb and Chorus effects add an extra dimension to the KORG SP-170 digital piano's sound. The Reverb provides a lush spaciousness while the Chorus effect adds motion and warmth to the sound.

Dual headphone outputs:
The rear panel of the 88-note KORG keyboard provides 2 headphone jacks, allowing 2 people to enjoy the sound simultaneously. This is ideal for playing duets or sharing songs with a friend; in addition, parent and child or student and teacher can share a lesson with complete privacy. A great set of keys for the price..

Comments about Korg SP170 - 88-Key Digital Piano with Full Stereo Sound System:

I've had this keyboard for about a year now and it has proven itself, despite my original skeptisism (I hoped KORG wouldn't let me down). I chose this over a Casio Privia when I purchased it and have been able to use it for endless practice, light/quick recording, rehearsals, and live performing.
To keep the rest simple... Pros:
The PRICE... for what you're getting is the main awesomeness.
The Build.. pretty sturdy, weighted keys, you can play pretty heavy, and travels well even without a case.
The Sound... speakers are great for home without plugging in. Piano, pipe organ, and strings are pretty good, although I wouldn't use these sounds if you are investing in studio time.
Can also be used as a full size midi controller.
The Connections; only 1/8 out jacks, don't understand this. Even my cheap Yamaha's have had 1/4 inch outs. And the two piece power adapter, make sure you get to a gig with both pieces!
Voices/Effects... You only get a few sounds and not really any effects to put on them. Reverb on/off, chorus on/off, and that's about it.

The only other thing is getting used to changing settings and sounds using the keys themselves, but you get used to it. And you can turn the beep off, since that was mentioned in other reviews.
Overall this is a pretty good axe and is great for home practice or ok for gigs, or keep as a backup to your $3000 stage workhorse. A year later it turns out it was a good investment.

Love it but....

Comments about Korg SP170 - 88-Key Digital Piano with Full Stereo Sound System:

Sounds are fine. Read several reviews online and most were very good. But Chose this over the Casio PX-130 because we didnt need all those bells and whistles. The first Piano sounds great, the second is no big deal. Love the pipe organ and the strings. The remaining sounds, harpsichord etc arent anything to write home about. At first was very skeptical regarding changing settings, but my daughter and I mastered it quite quickly. As for the clicking sound thats made when changing a setting, it can be turned off. My only other thing is the chorus effect is hardly noticable. The reverb is fine. I will be calling Korg on this.Overall very satisfied with our purchase.

Meets Expectations - Doesn't Exceed Them

By Boxter9

Comments about Korg SP170 - 88-Key Digital Piano with Full Stereo Sound System:

I was very excited to get the limited edition red Korg-SP170 for myself. My aim: get a budget-friendly keyboard that looks sexy onstage. More or less, this board achieves just that. Beware the 1/8 inch line-out jack, and make sure to order an adapter with the keyboard, otherwise you'll do what I did and sit around whining about how Korg failed to clearly mention a rather important spec. =P Also, if you're going to be using this in a performance situation, make sure you have a fairly powerful amp or sound system, because the speakers are somewhat wimpy by themselves. I would strongly recommend getting a better pedal as well, along with the matching stand. As for the actual sounds, the first piano sound is probably the most notable. It's not practical to use any of the other sounds onstage, because none of the other timbres are fantastic, and also the board makes a clicking sound when you change to other instruments. All in all - this is a simple product that gets the job done but does not exceed expectations. It's a great concept, and I hope that Korg continues and improves this line for the future. They should keep the red too. Because it's awesome.

Not A Viable Stage Piano

By David Murray

from Ellenboro, NC

Comments about Korg SP170 - 88-Key Digital Piano with Full Stereo Sound System:

I already own a Korg SP300, which I love, so I expected this SP170 to be similar with the exception of front panel buttons. Sadly, it's dumbed down more than I'd like. It's not a viable lightweight option for that piano player who really only needs one good piano sound to use on stage.Korg's official specs and the specs listed at Musicians Friend neglect to mention the two headphone/line out jacks are a flimsy 1/8 inch size rather than the 1/4 inch jacks you'd typically find on a quality Korg keyboard. Another downside for a stage performer is that the internal speakers are muted whenever anything it plugged into the line out jacks. The SP300 features an on/off switch for the speakers that isn't affected by the line outs. The quality of the built-in speakers in the SP170 is also degraded from the SP300's speakers. I expected some difference, but these are worse than I anticipated. If you're thinking about buying this keyboard, just keep in mind it's intended for students and little old ladies to use for practice at home. The shipping cost to return it would be prohibitive, so right now I'm trying to resell a student or little old lady.About the only thing I really like about this keyboard is the color. I got the limited edition red model.
