OVERVIEW

Great-sounding mixer with smart capabilities at a manageable price.

In a market that has a glut of small format mixing consoles, the Alto ZEPHYR ZMX862 is an excellent option. Its combination of low price, good build quality and smartly designed feature set has made it a real leader in a very competitive category.

The ZEPHYR ZMX862 is a 6-channel, 2-bus mixer with two phantom power-equipped microphone inputs, a three-band EQ and two AUX sends on each of the two mono channels and on the two stereo channels, and two-track inputs for audio playback.

You can plug dynamic, condenser, and wireless microphones into the first two channels, and you also get two stereo channel inputs for keyboards, drum machines, and other instruments. What's more, you can easily plug in your MP3 player, CD players, or audio from a DVD player into the CD/TAPE inputs. But, you also have two AUX sends that you can use to send streams of audio from your mixer to a digital effects unit, stage monitor, TV screen, or any number of sources. Choose the ZMX862 as the audio central command for your live performances, home studio, or video suite.

All Alto Professional ZEPHYR ZMX mixers are designed with high headroom and ultra low-noise mic preamps, so you get the full dynamic range of your mix every time.

Sometimes venues are dark and it can be hard to see what you're working with. Alto Professional solves this problem by not only color coding each section of the mixer, but also by using brightly colored knobs so that you can easily find what you need to adjust before you ever lay a finger on the mixer. The blue, red, yellow and white pots are instantly easy to identify in dim lighting. LED indicators for output level, peak, and phantom power also assist in making sure that you have multiple visual cues that compliment everything you're hearing.

The Alto ZEPHYR ZMX862 is a good sounding, reliable compact mixer for solo and duo acts, or for venues that have a need for a good sounding, small-format mixing console.

I had never heard of ALTO before, but I read a lot of really good reviews of this, as well as other ALTO mixers. In fact, it was difficult to find any negative reviews about it. I felt confident that this unit would be just what I needed. I think I made the right choice.

First of all, this mixer feels solid. Connectors are good and tight and controls have a nice tactile feel. One thing that impresses me is the eight segment output meters. They hit the mark with that one. Most units in this class have four or less LED's for "meters".
Next is the signal routing flexibility. With not one but TWO Aux sends (nearly unheard of in this class) you can rout your signals through different FX/Monitor setups. Stereo AUX return plus the tape in jacks, both with their own level controls, give you a very flexible way of routing signals out and back into the board. The only thing that is missing (and in reality, you seldom see this feature on smaller boards) are Channel Insert points on the mic channels.
Let's talk about the channels. The two mic channels have switchable +48 volt phantom power. This means you can use just about any mic you want with this board. The fact that you can turn it off when it is not needed is handy as well. All four (six) channels have a pre-gain control. This helps control the input signal before it gets to the channel strip. The preamps are very quiet and give a fair amount of gain without clipping or distorting. The EQ section is very "friendly" and responsive. It doesn't take a lot of turning to get the sound you want...yet the controls are not so "tight" that they are overly sensitive. Pan pot's and channel gains work as expected with no real issues. They are smooth, yet responsive.

Sound quality is very impressive. This little board rivals some of the "pro" boards I have used over the years...and that is saying something.

Naturally, there are things that could be improved on and maybe upgraded a little, but for the price of this little mixer, I don't think you can go wrong. This thing has really impressed me, and I am not the easiest sell in the world. I believe this board is going to serve its purpose (along with many other uses) very well. I do not regret buying this mixer, and given the need in the future, I will look at the ALTO line again.

Right out of the box, most of the Effects didn't work but I was satisfied to have the EQ; then, the phantom power went south; finally, the OUTPUT went KAPUT. Probably, about 16 hours of use: very disappointed: not worth my time to rectify the purchase. I should have just burned my money.

Comments about Alto Zephyr Series ZMX862 6-Channel Compact Mixer:

I produce a weekly radio show and was looking for a mixer that was portable yet packed with features. This is it! I love the 3 band EQ on each channel and the very small foot print. I will be using it to record show segments in restaurants and museums. There is NO hum or buzzing. Fully satisfied and happy.

Comments about Alto Zephyr Series ZMX862 6-Channel Compact Mixer:

I play drums and sing backing vocals, and I constantly am in need of a good monitor system. I play along with a metronome and use some great noise-cancelling in-ear monitors, but also need to hear the other vocalists and some guitars/keys. Using this mixer, I can plug in the metronome to channel 1, and an aux send from the main mixer with my own custom mix to channel 2, and listen to both in my in-ears through the headphone out. Great monitor mixer, and even has 2 aux sends of its own.

I bought this as a small DJ rig and for showing movies at campgrounds and events. It works well. I only wish it had some internal effects to it, but it can't be beat for the price. It is unpowered, so I run it into my 300 watt amp. Nice, clear sound without any noise. Overall a great product.

Comments about Alto Zephyr Series ZMX862 6-Channel Compact Mixer:

I was looking for a small mixer to compliment my Bose system which only has four channels. I purchased this solely on the reviews written and I am extremely pleased. I am a sound consultant for churches and I found the sound quality to be exceptional for price. The independent channel EQ has a nice wide range that will make whatever you plug into that channel sound good. Time will give a better idea of the durability but I think if protected (I purchase a case for everything I own) it will last a long time.

I have several small mixers including a Peavey PV6, a Mackie 802 VLZ3, a Behringer XENYX 1002B, a Phonic Mm1002 and 3 of the Alto ZMX862s. They are all good mixers, but the Alto's out perform all of the others. It's built like a Peavey, has the sound quality of a Mackie and a price that rivals a Behringer. If you're looking for a reasonably priced small footprint mixer that is functional without all the bells and whistles, then this will fit the bill!

I bought one of these a few years ago to use for DJ and back yard drive in movie use and have never had a problem with it. I have a regular Behringer DJ board I usually use for gigs, but I use one of these when I don't have a lot of announcements to do (it doesn't have any effects, so the mic comes through a little "dry"). It is compact and just works, so well in fact, I bought another one, just to have on hand, should the first one ever fail

The XLRF input connectors are mounted 180 degrees wrong. You cannot use a right angle XLRM mic input cable, as it will route the cable over the mixer knobs. Vertical cabling (not right angled) on a mixer this little is asking for trouble. Neatness of cabling is everything, especially with a small mixer. It makes no sense that they did it this way. Otherwise, it is an excellent small mixer.

Comments about Alto Zephyr Series ZMX862 6-Channel Compact Mixer:

Right out of the box, most of the Effects didn't work but I was satisfied to have the EQ; then, the phantom power went south; finally, the OUTPUT went KAPUT. Probably, about 16 hours of use: very disappointed: not worth my time to rectify the purchase. I should have just burned my money.
