Behringer Vs. Mackie

By JazzyRick

from Wisconsin

Comments about Behringer B415DSP 600W 15" Active Loudspeaker:

I don't own these, but I've used them as well as the older Mackie SRM450s. I saw the comparison in a previous review about power and weight and wanted to clarify a little bit. The Behringers are certainly heavier, but they are also a 15" speaker vs a 12" speaker. The Behringers also come with full DSP vs just a passive crossover theoretically evening out the response. I'm no fan of Behringers cheaper stuff, but there are exceptions. The EP2500 amps, and the microphones come to mind(don't like the EQs or Mixers though). These speakers also fall into the "Behringer stuff I like" category. The 15" will give you a bit more THUMP than a 12" Mackie. If you are using these for a band or DJ work that means more kick drum or more low end in general.

Look twice

Comments about Behringer B415DSP 600W 15" Active Loudspeaker:

I looked hard at these. Behringer designs some very good equipment at a very low cost. Compare these to the Mackie VM450's. It would seem Behringer has more power, BUT Behringer is rated in peak power. Peak = .707 x RMS power. Mackie rates in RMS. Take this into consideration and the power ratings are the same. Now look a the weight. Behringers weigh SEVENTY FIVE pounds. The Mackie's are 50 pounds and the new Mackie V2 is only 40 pounds. The difference in weight is very significant in my mind...

I use them live for electronic drums bass is awesome!!! I own them for almost a year. One is powerful enough for my drums and a monitor. I use two live one for sound reinforcement and one for the monitor. I use both for band practice and sound great. I acttually dropped one from my truck and never any problems are a little heavy.

Comments about Behringer B415DSP 600W 15" Active Loudspeaker:

Purchased extra warranty under advisement of other users and used it on day one.
One unit arrived without the horn! MF shipped me another one right away(Good Customer Svc)

Once I had the pair running, I thought it sounded pretty nasty, but realized I had to simply recalc my positioning, and they really do sound great.

Weve had these running in a commercial space for parties, and they can achieve pretty good SPL, and the freq response isnt too bad going through different power levels.

Solid speakers for the price(Get the warranty though!)

They are kinda heavy, and it wouldnt be much of an issue besides the handles. Handles on this do not align well with how most people lift the cabinets, perhaps I should approach it in another way?

The molded enclosure is pretty tough, but I'm thinking they could have stiffened it just a bit more, cabinet does not produce sound, but does have a slight excursion from it, which I personally dont like, but very marginal.

Bottom line, get em and warranty.

If I blow any of these drivers, I may opt to void my warranty, and replace with some nice eminence drivers as an experiment.

Comments about Behringer B415DSP 600W 15" Active Loudspeaker:

I was scared when I saw the other comments on how heavy these cabs were HOWEVER...I took a chance to buy them anyway. I'm 52 years old and I have no problem picking these cabs up, just lay the speaker on the side, insert your speaker pole, then life the speaker problems on my end. The sound...well, I will have to say it's the best sounding speakers I've ever heard in my 35 plus years DJ business. I did hear some, no so good things about behringer customers services so I would get the extra warranty. my advice....GET THEM.

Comments about Behringer B415DSP 600W 15" Active Loudspeaker:

Based on the reviews, this is a great sounding powered speaker but it weighs more that my Vox AC30c2. What is in this thing lead? The price is great but not at the cost of what's left of my lower back...

Comments about Behringer B415DSP 600W 15" Active Loudspeaker:

    * I've only used these twice, and not pushed them very hard yet. I plan on following up here after I have more experience. The main purpose of these speakers is to move air, and they appear to be able to do that pretty well.

    * Comparing them to my much more expensive Bose L1 system, probably isn't fair, they aren't as tight and crisp, but they they don't sound like garbage, either. And the L1, although higher quality, just can't fill the room like these. I also use a couple of Peavey SP2's with an 800w amp. The Beringer bass isn't as tight as the Peavey, and there is a bit more mid mud, but nothing that can't be easily fixed with a little EQ.

    * So as far as the functionality of these speakers, I'm satisfied. I have no use for the built in mixer or the other "gadgets" built in, so no comment.

    * I don't know what they were thinking when they designed the carrying handles... apparently whoever came up with this design had never carried a 75lb speaker or tried to lift it up on a stand.

    * I suppose the 75lb weight might actually be a good thing, as it could be an indication of quality, heavy duty components. Time will tell.

Bottom line... good bang for the buck so far. I hope I can remember to follow up after a few months.
