Comments about CHAUVET DJ FootC DMX Footswitch:

Was looking for a foot controller to control the few fixtures I have for my band. Currently I have a simple foot switch that literally turns the fixtures off and on for control. I have no black out function and lights are always in sound active modes. This seemed like the perfect solution since I could potentially have the ability to control specific scenes and chases through dmx.
Being new to dmx, I didn't realize it only sports fixtures with up to 6 channels. Fixtures like mine that have more than 6 channels either do not work at all or work in a very limited fashion. I found that only 3 out of 7 lights were fully compatible. 2 had limited function and the rest did not work at all. My Chauvet intimidator 250 spot led moving heads were 2 of the fixtures that were not compatible. I called Chauvet support to see if there was anything I could do but they told me that this controller was only intended for low cost stationary lights and not for moving heads.
I ended up returning the unit and buying an MBT sc-80 instead. not really any better off from a control perspective but at least I can turn them off or on individually.
If you have a simple light array then this is the controller for you

Comments about CHAUVET DJ FootC DMX Footswitch:

It took me quite sometime to set it up. Each fixture I set up had different parameters. If used with matching fixtures it would be a little easier. Finally got all fixtures (light) working. Manual was not very clear. If you have never set up dmx lighting this would be a tough way to go. Now that it is working I love it.

Comments about CHAUVET DJ FootC DMX Footswitch:

Maybe I was wishing that this was the magic floor footswitch for the DMX. I run at a minimum four of the four bar DMX lights. Was hoping I could program the lights with scenes and chases. The footswitch that comes with it actually operates two better than this does. Unfortunately I will be returning this.

Does Not Respond to Program Change Commands as Advertised

Cons

  • Complicated To Use on Stage
  • Does Not Respond to Midi Program Change
  • Speed Setting Affects Both Scenes and Chases

Best Uses

Comments about CHAUVET DJ FootC DMX Footswitch:

I was hoping the Foot-C would be a simple way to program lighting for use on stage in a live band setting. There are supposed to be two modes, Scenes and Chases - but in reality there is only one as the Speed and Fade settings affect both modes. Ideally one should be able to program a chase with desired speed and fade settings and also have fixed scenes that do not change. The only way to accomplish this is by changing the speed and fade settings on the fly by pressing the Up/Down buttons repeatedly when you want to change modes - this makes it too complicated to use on stage. There could be a workaround if the unit responded to Midi Program Change commands, which according to the manual would allow one to set Speed and Fade times. However, the Foot-C as shipped only responds to certain note commands and ignores the Program Change commands. This unit is really only good for constantly changing scenes that you can sync to music. Even Blackout is needlessly complicated in that one has to hold down the blackout switch for a couple of seconds for it to take effect. Forget about timing those to the performance.

Comments about CHAUVET DJ FootC DMX Footswitch:

I almost sent it back ! Until I realized the error was ALL MINE. Very easy to set up(ONCE YOU GET IT)
THE MANUAL IS A JOKE !! It would be nice if .....it allowed speed & fade to be "programmed" into chases. I like the fact that it can still be manual run while keeping setting in tact.
Still room for improvement. I had to skip 7-13 because 7 will still work on my 1-6 lights(7 ch.)

      Lots of compromise

Comments about CHAUVET DJ FootC DMX Footswitch:

I bought this product along with some cheap 6 channel lights. The foot c-2 controls the lights as it should. However, for most musicians, this is better suited to a single scene per song. I had expected more of a 'bank and preset' such that there would be a few scenes available, but instead you have to navigate to the correct scene with UP/DOWN buttons and then ENTER to select, which could be 12 presses to get to the right setting. That didn't work for us.

For our first show, we programmed chases for each song, set the foot c-2 to program mode, and manually stepped through the steps in the chases with the UP button, and then ENTER to move to the next song. This also wasn't great, because a wrong button resets the whole set and you have to step through each song again.

We're going to use midi for the next show and have it triggered with a computer running Logic. If I had known this is where we would be after one show, I would have purchased a more powerful controller (more scenes, controllable scene fade times) without the pedal functionality. The foot c-2 can only respond to NOTE ON commands, not PROGRAM CHANGE as the manual suggests (verified by their customer service), which mean lighting changes have to be the same speed universally (either all immediate, all slow, or all somewhere in between). The PROGRAM CHANGE command was supposed to be able to change this, but...that never made it into the product.

Long story short, this is only the right choice for very few people who want something limited but foot-controlled. If I had to do it again, I would either do an Obey 70 with Logic Pro or DMXIS with Show Buddy.
