OVERVIEW

18-in, 20-out USB audio interface with eight Scarlett mic preamps.

The second generation Scarlett range is packed full of upgrades. Scarlett generation 2 features super-low latency that will bring confidence to your performance, letting you record and monitor with software effects in real time. Its metal volume controls and a sleeker red metal chassis underscore its improved industrial design, built to go anywhere. Scarlett USB audio interfaces also now operate at sample rates all the way up to 192kHz, and the input channels have evolved too. The latest Scarlett mic preamp features a more even gain structure, so you can accurately set your levels, and the instrument input has also been completely redesigned so it can handle seriously hot pickups for recording electric guitar.

The latest generation Scarlett 18i20 is an 18-in, 20-out USB audio interface that can handle just about anything your band or studio can throw at it. Beautiful and rack mountable, it gives you loads of I/O, pristine sound quality, separate stereo headphone mixes, extensive expansion options and round-trip latency as low as 2.74ms, all in a 1U rackspace.

Focusrite interfaces are the perfect partner for Pro Tools, so Scarlett 18i20 comes with Pro Tools | First recording software, as well as Ableton Live Lite and a suite of software and samples so you can start recording straight away. As you’d expect, it works flawlessly with all major DAWs on Mac and PC.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface:

I got this to use with Pro Tools 12 native on my MacBook Pro. I needed something that would work with PT, give me at least 8 analog ins and one S/PDIF in, have low latency, and not cost a fortune. My previous interface, which cost about one and half times as much, was abandoned by its manufacturer, and stopped working permanently in Sierra.
The Focusrite bolted right up to all my I/O, works and sounds great, and has all the I/O I needed. I have an extensive setup of external preamps and compressor/limiters, so I wasn't so much interested in the preamps in the Scarlett as the balanced I/O, but these do sound great. I've experimented with the onboard preamps compared to my pricier preamps, and they compare very favorably. The switchable levels on the first couple of channels, and the flexible routing through the control app make the 18i20 very versatile.
My only small gripe is that the 1-2 inputs are only accessible from the front. I run a snake from my preamp patch bay to the first 8 channels, and like to be able to have those patched, but be able to patch in from the front with a keyboard or something if needed. In order to make that work with this unit, I needed to run the 1-2 to another patch bay by the 18i20, and pitch cables to the front 1-2 inputs. Not a big hassle, but a hassle nonetheless.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface:

This review is of the First Generation unit. Same model. Don't buy. Owned unit for little over a year when it stopped working due to a Focusrite mandatory software update. Worked fine within first year but then when turned on unfit and opened software it instructed me to download latest software or otherwise won't work. After doing so, unit shut down and crashed my iMac. Had to have computer restored and after dealing with Focusrite, their claiming no responsibility and instead continued to tell me that their software won't instrusct a download. That is flat out false. Instead they offer me to pay tonhabe it fixes when it's apparently a defect In their design. That is why they offer a second generation of same unit. This back and forth exchange, which the tech was being helpful, was a few months and no positive results. So, I would instruct any of you not to buy a faulty product from a not so reputable company.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface:

Works great! I use it with the Focusrite Octopre. Pretty easy to set up for different sound setups, you just have to utilize the Focusrite Control, which is what allows you to setup the different settings for the interface. It saves the last setting you use in the Focusrite Control to the interface, so you can even set it up for analog use and use it with a multiple keyboard setup at a show if you wanted. If you aren't a dumbo and actually read the instruction for it then it's all pretty simple, otherwise you'll just be under-utilizing it and just gonna be sending it to an early grave like you've probably done with the other gear you've failed to follow instruction on lol.

Comments about Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface:

This has a very good sound, not too bright, solid low end.
The input/output options are great, very flexible routing.
The only thing to get used to is the software, which could be better, but it's not bad,
it gives you lots of routing options.
