I bought this for our church's sound system to record services directly from the board. I've been really happy with the unit's performance so far. Clear recording quality, much better than the portable recorder we'd been using, and its ability to record to USB sticks makes posting podcasts really simple. Someday we'll move to computer recording, but for now, this meets the need with very little sacrifice in quality!

Correction, I ownED it. If you care about the quality of your recordings, DO NOT BUY THIS. I bought this when it was $30 cheaper and it still wasn't worth it. If you're a musician, this simply will not cut it. I read some reviews of this being used for church services - I can see where it might pass there. I received this, and it had a very noticeable hiss/squeak in all the recordings, like the pulley sound mentioned by another reviewer. I thought it was the mic but I used several different microphones, and several different settings, no dice. I sent it to the manufacturer, they sent me a brand new one, SAME PROBLEM. After a little assertive-aggressiveness, MF agreed to exchange for a new product. Do yourself a favor and grab the Line 6 UX1 if you have a PC around you can use it with. It blows this thing clean out of the water, for $50 less! I'm surprised this junk has as high of a review as it does. Avoid the frustration and continue looking, this is not for you, or any musician.

The iKey RM-3 is clearly the lowest priced rackmount MP3 audio recorder as of this writing," and provides a solution for budget-limited users that appreciate rack ears.
Positives:Headphone jack with Volume knob - very handy for ""confidence""SD card may be removed while unit is powered onLarge time counter displayCompact - 1RUInexpensiveCaveats:Only 4 recording settings the lowest of which is 128kbpsUnit powers up in the uncompressed mode and must be reset to lower data ratesOnly one female XLR input", which is mic level and mono - however," there are 1/4"" phone and RCA inputsVU meter is slow", but functional

Answer To Prayer

By Gene Jordan

from Lafayette, La

All I needed for our church was an ID10T proof recorder that could make a editable/upload-able recording of our church sermons. The playback over our Sound System showed no discernible difference. You do not need to sync this to your computer, because you can just pull the SD card and plug it into most newer computers. We didn't detect any humming noise, but this will record feedback if it is in the room (most recorders will). We didn't need frills, but when iKey comes out with an affordable MP3/CD recorder, they have a customer.

A Little Room to Improve

By Audio Thing

The RM-3 is being used to record live services at our church. I have used both the included SD card and a thumb drive to record. Transfer to my PC was no hassle at all. The only drawback is the record and playback controls have rubberized buttons and respond a bit on the clunky side. You cannot use the SD and thumb drive at the same time because the thumb drive is dominant.

Squeaky and consumer-y cheap

By Chris

This is my backup recorder which I try to record "cooler" than my Alesis ML9600 during simultaneous recordings. On the first use I thought I heard a mechanical squeaking sound, like a pulley squeaking on a belt - thought it might be an air conditioner unit in the auditorium (though there was no such sound on my ML9600). Two jobs later I needed this backup, and sure enough the squeak is there. You an hear it in headphones during recording, but I thought it might be an artifact of a cranked headphone volume. Not so. It's embedded in the recording. It's also difficult to adjust the record levels because the clunky/choppy level meters are NOT fast and NOT in real-time. You can't get an accurate level. I have had PC file transfer issues that a previous reviewer cited. Also there is no fast-forward button for playback so you can't jump to any particular section of the recording. It only records in 3 mp3 compression rates, and only plays back in those rates - so if you insert an SD card with .mp3's you created elsewhere, and they're not 128, 256, or 320 compression, they won't play. Machine is being returned. GREAT IDEA for a low-cost rackmount backup solution, but this is not ready for prime time.

Not Ready for Prime Time

By drmda

from Indianapolis, NI

I have owned this device for 3 weeks. I use the RM3 to record sermons at my church. But, it is now on the way back to the vendor (not Musicians Friend). Unfortunately, I cannot transfer the mp3 files created to my computer. One is supposed to to be able to transfer via the included USB cable. My PC computer sees the RM3, but transfers of mp3s always result in a file transfer error. Taking the included SD card out of the RM3 and placing it in a media reader doesn't work either. Copying the file still results in a file transfer error. It appears that the file may be in an incorrect format.I was able to get a short .wav file to transfer, but this is not suitable in my application.Even though the device appears to create a badly formatted file, the RM3 is able to playback the mp3 files through the analog audio outputs and I was able to record to my pc. At least I have not lost my recordings.I have tried on 2 occasions to contact iKey tech support via their online e-mail app, but have not received a reply.I suspect these problems can be corrected by a software update, but with the inability to contact tech support I have no idea when this may be.

Functions with Compromises

By KC Utility Player

Ask me a question

This unit is the least expensive rackmounted MP3 recorder on the market. It functions, but has a few drawbacks that professionals will find annoying: 1. The VU meter functions more like a Peak LED. 2. The RM3 initializes to record in .WAV mode upon power-up. 3. The RM3 is not friendly to balanced line level via XLR. 4. Data rate choices are few.Yes, the device works fine within certain parameters. If you can work around all these hurdles, then the low cost will be a fair compromise.
