Good Mic - quite bright!

Comments about MXL V900D Dynamic Microphone in a Classic Style Body:

I bought this mic to use in my retro-swing style band. I've used it at 3 live performances & so far I'm quite pleased. It is quite a bit brighter than your standard SM58 so you front of house tech & monitor tech can bring the high mids & treble frequencies down on the channel this mic is in. As we all know - Treble & Hi-Mid reduction in a live setting results in less feedback - this is a GOOD thing.
The sound of the mic is good over-all & the look ....... well it can't be beat if you're in a rockabilly or swing band.

Comments about MXL V900D Dynamic Microphone in a Classic Style Body:

I bought this mic on sort of a whim. I have a thing for vintage looking mics. SM58s are great but they lack soul! Anyway, I read all the reviews and then bought it. It is larger than I expected and as everyone else said in reviews, it is heavy. That being said, I don't think that is a bad thing. Just make sure your mic stand is up to the task! The mic is beautiful! The finish is flawless. Looks great on stage and in the studio. Most importantly it sounds great! It filters pops as well as any mic I have used without a filter. Vocals are warm and clear. Very happy with it. I tend to rotate mics in and out for practice and shows. This one has easily earned it's place in the lineup!

Comments about MXL V900D Dynamic Microphone in a Classic Style Body:

I bought this mic on sale and added a bunch of BP points to get a Real Good Deal! Cons, this thing is REALLY BULKY & HEAVY!! 2nd, it has no volume or tone plugged in alone. Pros, it has a really cool retro look and if you run it through a pre amp and a processor you can get some decent tone and volume out of it. I tried numerous set ups and ended up running it through a ART Tube MP and a TC Helicon Voice Tone foot pedal with the compression / shape at 75% and the warmth button on. So as you can see I have it heavily compressed, but it sounds good. You're going to have to mess with it to achieve a sound you like so hang in there don't get discouraged!

Really terrible sounding and poorly built mic

      By Rob

      from MN

Comments about MXL V900D Dynamic Microphone in a Classic Style Body:

This is one of the worst sounding mics I've ever heard. Sounds nothing like a quality dynamic should. Has a very honky resonance somewhere in the upper mids. The one I got also had the threads for mounting on a stand too tight and it was impossible to mount it on a stand because of it. MXL should quit producing so many variations of these mics and instead concentrate on the best of their line and improve quality control.

I have used this mic for several things. If you need a retro looking mic and a brighter tone, it might work for you. It does sound better than I thought it would.

Comments about MXL V900D Dynamic Microphone in a Classic Style Body:

I sometimes provide vintage microphones to a few of the local theaters. I bought this as an RCA-44 look-alike for that purpose. I haven't used it on stage yet, but I think it looks good. Today, I was working on a recording and decided to try it on a trumpet part and on a vocal. It was great with the trumpet, giving it a bright, powerful sound. For the vocal, I don't think I'll make a habit of using it because it is a bit bright. Nevertheless, that quality worked well for the song I recorded today. The extra brightness helped the vocals to cut through a thick mix of brass, guitars, and organ.

Comments about MXL V900D Dynamic Microphone in a Classic Style Body:

I'm not going to get too technical about this mic because for me, it falls in a class nearly by itself. I love side-address microphones. I just do. They look cool and they're fun to sing into. And aside from the fact that in the dynamic world there's not a lot of competition, on those two criteria alone this one gets 10 out of 10 in both categories. Pristine? Transparent? Warm? Who cares. It's a blast, plus I got a great deal from Musician's Friend. Oh yeah, I've also got a Shure Super 55 and an MXL V400. They're all right. This one? I just dig it.

Comments about MXL V900D Dynamic Microphone in a Classic Style Body:

I was looking for a cool retro-style microphone for my wife. She is used to singing into my vintage RCA 77DX and wanted her own vintage looking microphone for live performances. The V900D fits the bill nicely and looks similar to an RCA 44A mic. It has a really clean sound through our PA which surprised me. It sounds somewhere in between my Shure SM57 and Audix OM5. It's a pretty accurate sounding live mic. It's also good for working the proximity effect when needed which is nice.

Fair warning, this mic is HUGE and kind of heavy. (I've attached a photo for size reference.)It's reassuring in that it feels solidly built. We are using it on straight stand and it's fine but you'll need a rather substantial counter balance if you are to use it with a boom stand. All in all I'm very satisfied with the V900D and plan on buying another one so we have matching live performance microphones.
