I love this valve condenser mic. I bought this mic to add to my small collection of mics from SM58's to a Neumann TLM 103. I cannot stop using this thing on my own voice. It sounds very classy, open and wide. I love the proximity effect. It's definitely a warm sounding mic, with a smoothness to it. Never felt any harshness like some cheap Chinese mics. Before I purchased this valve mic, I tried the SE Z5600a (it was too bright and sibilant), Studio Projects T3 (again a little bright and thin), MXL v69 (nice but over sibilant). To be honest sibilance is not my main concern, but the K2 doesn't have that problem like many other mics. On some Sss'es you get a little bit emphasised, but a little eq shelf or a nice software de'esser (like Waves or even Logic Pros own plug in) solves any slight problems with sibilant singers. Overall this tube based mic is the best sounding and has the most convincing vintage character in the mid market price range. Compared to my TLM 103, the K2 offers me a slighlty different colour in sound as well as flexibilty from singer to singer. If you have ever heard the Neumann M147 Tube mic, or a decent souding U67, the K2 comes pretty close indeed. This mic is destined to be a studio classic in this modern day.

I don't get it. I've used other Rode microphones with great results, but not this one. First of all, it doesn't even sound like a tube mic. Having used the Rode NTK on several occasions, I was hoping for something similar but with adjustable patterns. No such luck, the NTK and the K2 don't even sound related. There is no warmth at all. There's not much low end. The only thing I could hear were the upper mids. As a matter of fact, this is the worst vocal microphone I have ever sang through. In the microphone's defense, it sounded very good on acoustic guitars, but I have several less expensive mics that sound just a good. I had another singer test the mic out who had better results with a stylized 90's alternative type vocal. I'm more of traditional singer and it didn't work for me at all. In conclusion, if you're looking for a classic sounding tube mic with characteristics similar to recordings from the 60's and 70's, this isn't the one. Buy the Rode NTK instead.

Comments about Rode Microphones K2 Variable-Pattern Tube Microphone:

I recorded my CD Ten Tales To Be Told and YouTube single "He Will Come" with this mic, but I did use a $2000 preamp and DBX160a compressor and $1500 reverb...but clarity I thought was terrific. Currently recording Christmas single with it. Mike is as good as one's vocals because it will expose weaknesses as well as capture the great lines. And very durable. I've had it for 10 years running and I don't see any need for any Neumann etc at this point. This is my vocal and acoustic guitar mic of choice.

Comments about Rode Microphones K2 Variable-Pattern Tube Microphone:

I was a little apprehensive to purchase another microphone under a grand, but the RODE K2 was a very smart purchase. So far, sonically it beats out my AKG 414, and my Neumann BCM 104 for male vocals. It is similar in character to my AT4033/CL, but much more detailed and richer. For a valve microphone in this price range, nothing I've heard comes close, {especially the Studio Projects T3.} Until I can afford a U87, this will be my first string vocal mic.

This is the third time I've purchased this mic (once each in two previous jobs). Very happy with it as a vocal mic for female voices in particular. Teamed with a Rupert Neve 511 and I think it sounds great.

Comments about Rode Microphones K2 Variable-Pattern Tube Microphone:

Everything about this microphone demands praise. For four times the price you cannot find a finer transducer. Forget Neumann. I first noticed the clarity and transparency of the images the K2 produces. Awesome vocal mic (use a pop filter). INCREDIBLE drum overhead mic - captures both transients and low amplitude colors with headroom to spare. Acoustic instruments sound as they should through the K natural, warm and vibrant. There is nothing this thing can't capture.

Comments about Rode Microphones K2 Variable-Pattern Tube Microphone:

I got this mic about 8 or 9 months ago, and from the first recording I did with it I knew it was one of the best mics I've ever heard. Ever now and then I get the chance to record in very nice studios, and when I do I am adamant about using this mic for all male vocals, acoustic guitars, and drum overhead. A lot of engineers think I'm crazy at first, but I tell them to grab their best mic and put them back to back and see which one sounds best... its mine. I really wanna venture into the world of stereo mic'ing with good large diaphragms so I'm getting another one. I will have this mic for the rest of my life, and I'll leave it in my will for a grandson or something.

      Heavy Hitter, Great Value

      By Riffster

      from Cleveland, OH

Comments about Rode Microphones K2 Variable-Pattern Tube Microphone:

It was a toss at the last moment to get the NT2A & a nice preamp or the K2, since I couldn't make up my mind about the preamp I decided to put the cash into the mic. I am glad I did, because this is truly an excellent microphone. Built like a tank, great shock mount & top notch power supply with fully variable polar pattern. Sensitivity is off the wall, I had to build some gobos because this mic was picking up the spiders farting. Tube characteristics all the way with subtle tones produced from just working the mic closer. Excellent value considering you truly are getting a professional tube multi-pattern mic in all aspects for only 7 beans and some real heavy hitters out there have very good things to say about this unit. Mount this mic on the good mic stand.

Comments about Rode Microphones K2 Variable-Pattern Tube Microphone:

First of all...you need to have a really good preamp to make any mic sound good. I have a UA 6176 pre/compressor...and wow! Together with my K2...my music went from obvious home studio to...hey that sounds pro! Great for vocals and acoustic instruments! Pay the extra couple of hundred dollars to upgrade to this mic...sounds as good as some $2,000 mics.

      Outstanding Vocal Mic

Comments about Rode Microphones K2 Variable-Pattern Tube Microphone:

Overall its a great "Studio Vocal Mic", brings out your voice, makes it stronger, smoother, richer, etc. Now keep in mind you must have a great sound card & preamp to hear/feel the mics full advantage. The mic alone has great Quality, but quality comes from the sound card the most. If you want the best sound try having these 3 things, (Digital PCI soundcard or better, Great Preamp, then the Rode K2). I own the RME PCI Sound Card, the quality is great overall. - K Bri

Comments about Rode Microphones K2 Variable-Pattern Tube Microphone:

I've owned this mic for two years now and it is wonderful. You do have to follow your chain with good equipment for great results, have some recording know-how and what you feed your mic has to have quality in order to hear quality at the end. If that sounds like something you can do then this is a mic for you. Yes it will enhance your recordings. This is a quality piece of gear. Buy it and enjoy.

One of the most detailed and yet pretty and warm microphones available at any price. It's difficult to believe the price. I'm beginning to be afriad that Rode will start charging what these microphones are really worth. I own the NT1-A and it's also excellent. The K2 is superb in every way.

Comments about Rode Microphones K2 Variable-Pattern Tube Microphone:

Bought this mic 3 yrs ago and have been using it for my current project. Took it into my producer's studio and insisted on using it, along with the UA 6176 that I brought in. He has now fallen in love with the combo...to the point that he refuses to give them up!!! But I've told him from the beginning, that these were not available for 'time in the studio' trade. That's how good the combo is!
