Premium-quality Sound
Everything about the DR-05 is designed to get the best quality recordings of your music. A new pair of built-in microphones withstands up to 125dB SPL ”the volume of a jet plane from 200 feet away”yet still have the sensitivity to capture every detail of a performance. You can add your own microphone or line-level source through the 1/8" stereo input, including plug-in power for microphones that need it.
Internally, the DR-05's digital and analog circuit boards are built separately to improve noise performance, with a low-impedance design to further decrease hiss. A separate power supply is sent to the A/D and D/A converter for even better audio performance. The result is clean sound quality ”over 92dB signal-to-noise ratio; under 0.05% total harmonic distortionl and 20Hz to 40kHz response (-1/+3dB) at 24-bit/96kHz resolution.
Simple to Operate
The layout of the DR-05 has been revamped to be quick and easy to work with one thumb. Operations like recording, adjusting levels, deleting bad takes and adding markers are just a button-press away. Dig deeper to find features like limiting, low-cut filtering, a built-in chromatic tuner, and more.
One new feature that makes the DR-05 easy to operate is the new Peak Reduction feature. This setting automatically sets your recording level by listening to the input and adjusting for the best level. Unlike Auto Gain settings, this one only goes down to prevent accidental distortion after a period of low level like a break. Peak Recording works in rehearsal mode or in record, so if the performance is louder than the soundcheck you're still safe. Used with the built-in limiter, it's unlikely you'll distort your career-making live recording.
Other classic TASCAM features are included, like Variable Speed Audition to loop and slow down music without changing the pitch”perfect for transcribing or learning new music. A Level Align function can be switched on for playback to smooth out any sudden volume jumps, and a built-in speaker is also provided. The two AA batteries are enough to power the recorder for 17 1/2 hours, even while recording at CD quality.

This recorder has such good Low middle and high reproduction you can't tell the difference from the music coming live off the stage and what's coming off the recorder during playback on a good sound system, it picks up the lowest note you play on the bass, to the highest tick of the cymbal's and everything in between just as clear as it came off the stage at 24 feet with the settings set at 24 bit on the unit.

Battery life is great and storage on the mini-card is wonderful. You can download great quantities of mp3 music and the sound is great through earbuds or external speakers. But that's where the positive ends. You can get that same quality sound with your smartphone in a smaller device.
While recording, there is too much control over the minimal amount of functions, then the recording quality is poor. The built in speaker is worthless. You can barely hear the distorted sound. The twin microphones only work within a few feet and the recording sounds like it's recording from another room. The only way I've found to edit the actual recording is to copy it into Audacity or another program in your laptop where you can use their features. But it's still an amateaurish sounding recording. I intend to exchange this device for another before I completely give up on it. But, I don't have high hopes for satisfaction with this recorder.

Comments about TASCAM Special Edition Vintage Gold DR-05 Linear PCM Recorder:
This is a great recording device for the beginner and the pro. For rehearsing and getting a glimpse of live performances, it is a great asset that is easy to position, adjust, record, and retrieve.
For professional recordings, I would not use it for overall mixes, but it is handy if you want to record select field sources, such as natures sounds (a forest full of birds, the ocean on the sand, wind through the trees, etc.) or general environmental sounds (city traffic, a chainsaw, a crowded train station); anything that would be added to a professional recording as a single or stereo track.
Easy to use. I do recommend increasing the storage capacity if you want to get the most of the unit.
Battery life is moderate, but good enough that I won't complain; but I will bring extras with me as a backup.

Comments about TASCAM Special Edition Vintage Gold DR-05 Linear PCM Recorder:
This recorder works very well for recording practice sessions, which is what I purchased it for. I play with a great band every week at church, but the worship leader loves to change things from how they're written, including the key. It was hard to practice and write notes and remember everything, so now I can record our Tuesday night practice session and practice with it, which has the added bonus of practicing with the whole band as well as hearing myself, which helps me know if I'm doing something wrong. The only downside to this unit is that the controls are not very intuitive, you're going to want to keep that manual handy (the manual is twice the size of the recorder if that gives you a hint).

Comments about TASCAM Special Edition Vintage Gold DR-05 Linear PCM Recorder:
Bought this to record band rehearsals and not expecting much in the way of quality. However, tried it for the first time at an outside gig this weekend and it worked very well. Sound quality was much better than expected given how small the onboard mics are, and the fact I had it taped to a fence! Worked great, and will even be able to pull some material for demos.

Comments about TASCAM Special Edition Vintage Gold DR-05 Linear PCM Recorder:
I sing and play guitar along with my laptop for backround music. I placed the recorder next to my laptop and it worked great. I was able to start and stop every song easily. I was really happy with the sound I got from it. I did buy a 32G memory card so I could record 4 hrs. at the best speed.
