I own a 24Channel Yamaha MX, Mackie VLZ-pro and Peavey Mixers. I do LIVE PA enginnering and Studio Mix engineering for a living. I have Mixed on the vast majority of Semi pro and Budget Mixers out there. Some people said their vocals sounded robotic and the guitars sounded Wahwahish. Another said Their Vocals sounded muffled and the FX cause feedback? Well I don't know what they could be doing to cause that. There are a few knobs they possibly overlooked in the AUX matrix that could cause feedback, I suppose. I use this Mixer All the time in professional mobile sound environments and always get compliments on the sound. I would think that's due to the engineer not the the mixer, But this guy Beats Mackie VLZ-pro for me. I prefer the ONYX to this- but I know VLZ's and know Yamaha and I prefer the MG sound. It's clean and musical and the FX are fine for 99 percent of live situations. Only beef I have with the FX is that include a tap tempo doe delays, like the 24 and 32 channel Mg's. My other complaints Is I would prefer both AUX'S to be post fader. I also own a SPX990, and while Yamaha claims the MG mixer contains SPX algorithms, the reverb from the SPX is better and more realistic. I was skeptical of the 1 knob Comp at first as I'm a compressor Buff and like my controls, but I was happy with the way it reacts to vocals. of course using it too much can cause feedback. To end, I'd say people getting strange sound need to rethink their chain, or learn how to operate a mixer. I've been an Audio engineer for years and I KNOW this mixer Is among the best budget choices out there. Fexible yet compact, and always sounds perfect!

I used it for last weekend brand new out of the box, and had no issues setting it up with mics, DI's, mains and monitors.

The EQ's are not as accurate after the halfway mark with a faster rise than desired. BUT, that may just be me.

Clean sound with no decrease in signal-to-noise.

Have an outdoor event in two weeks that I'll be working with several bands during the course of the weekend, so it will be a good test to see how it works with various mixes and gains.

What a Great Suprise!

By Mandingo

Comments about Yamaha MG166CX 16-Channel Mixer With Compression and Effects:

I just purchased this mixer a week ago for use with my jrx125 dual 15 inch cabs, epx 3000 power amp, sure beta 58/58 mics in a rock band with 2 guitars. We have 3 vocalists, and I can honestly say that This mixer does it all! I couldn't be more pleased with the ease of use, sound quality, even the effects if used properly and of course with the right mic's are amazing! You can even run multiple monitor setups with ease thanks to the swift thinking of yamaha. I thought for being a cheaper yamaha it would sacrifice quality. This being said and 20 years of experience with yamaha pm, allen & heath, mackie, and soundcraft professional consoles, I will never go to another mixer unless it is an upgraded version of this. I'm even getting a second one even though it is not needed to use as a 10 channel monitor board. Way to go yamaha!

Comments about Yamaha MG166CX 16-Channel Mixer With Compression and Effects:

I bought this unit based on my experience with an older MG-10/2. The older unit had a metal chassis and a quality feel to the knobs. This unit has a plastic chassis, and the knobs and sliders don't have the same quality feel. I'd rather pay a little more and get something more durable.

Comments about Yamaha MG166CX 16-Channel Mixer With Compression and Effects:

I recently purchased one of these from a local distributor. I have over 25 years experience in sound systems, played semi pro for several years and mixed sound on a local level. I have used some really high dollar boards,(Allen and Heath,Mackie etc.) and some of the cheap stuff too. For the price range I believe this cannot be beat. This unit is by far one of the cleanest and easy to use I have ever encountered. Excellent sound quality! The effects are decent, not spectacular, but they get the job done. The compression on the first channels is a nice touch. Compact design for rack mounting is great for having a portable easy to set up system. I used this board for the first time for a local band and had the sound set within a few SECONDS! Seriously they werent even into the second line of the sound check! I got loads of compliments from the bar owner, the customers, and the guys in the band, they couldnt beleive the sound. If you know ANYTHING about setting sound this little guy will do the job. This is a very high quality item for the money. Highly Impressed. Great job Yamaha!

Comments about Yamaha MG166CX 16-Channel Mixer With Compression and Effects:

We just purchased this mixer and few weeks ago. I was amazed at how light weight it was. That sure makes a difference in the rack. The auxillary outs are very handy for monitors. The onboard effects sound great. The only con is that there is no overall gain on the last two channels where the RCA jacks are. Just remember to have your volumes down low when you start your CD. It takes a 12 Space rack, but if you'll get you a SKB Mighty GigRig, you're ready to go!

Been playing since the seventies,Started a band of my own seven years ago. This board is what I settled on and it was the right choice. Built a good road case for it and we have giged four to nine times a month for the last seven years with it. Every nob and fader still works perfectly. Inputs and outputs, solid as a rock. I use a 31 band EQ with it and the sound is perfect. I've run other. Get your gain structure right and this board is as good as anything out there.

This is a great mixer with some good sounding preamps. The compression knob isn't amazing, but it definitely helps compress the vocals. I tell everyone that yamaha mixers are the best mixers for the money, guaranteed. I'm actually going to buy some of the smaller versions of this mixer now too.

Comments about Yamaha MG166CX 16-Channel Mixer With Compression and Effects:

I'm using one in a small club for my band every weekend, it's convenient because I was able to sent 4 different outputs/monitors with their own levels, and 2 auxs outputs with own levels. For the price I think it's good. The eq was decent. The ONLY big problem is the effects. These Yamaha effects are very dry, produces feedbacks, and makes the vocals unclear. I am using an Alesis Nanoverb hooked up to a small Behringer mixer just for the vocals, and problem solved.

Comments about Yamaha MG166CX 16-Channel Mixer With Compression and Effects:

I bought this mixer to provide sound for my Bluegrass band. It has the phantom power to use the traditional single condenser mic setup AND enough inputs if we want to mic each singer and instrument. I love the way you can assign each channel to one of two separate buses. (This way you can assign instruments to one bus and vocals to another and mix as needed). It fits perfectly on top of our audio rack and has everything clearly marked. Even those without much sound mixer experience can simply read the knob labels and pretty much figure it out. All things considered, I'm pretty impressed with the mixer.

I'm a drummer who has recently ventured in to working the sound. I needed an inexpensive board that sounded good for a rock band. This board is easy enough for someone with my skill level to use and it sounds great. The effects are pretty usable (especially stage reverb). The single-nob compression is also a nice touch. With a little eq, vocals sound great in seconds. Good board for the money.

Comments about Yamaha MG166CX 16-Channel Mixer With Compression and Effects:

I own the MG 16 and 24 Channel boards with my PA. I purchased the 16 channel to use as a sub-mixer for my extensive drum kit. When we added a 5th singing member to our band - I started running out of channels on the MG24 mains board. I love the MG-series - I am a converted Allen&Heath guy when they started using different pre-amps on channel inputs and most of the gain headroom was lost. The MG24 and higher boards actually use the same pre-amps as the very expensive MC consoles (so I'm told). I love the on-board effects and rarely use my external effects anymore.
I also wish there was EQ and gain control on the RCA aux inputs for program sources. I also wish on the 24 channel board that the cross-over for the mono channel had a high-pass enable for the mains so I can use the mono for subs and L/R mains for mid/hi speakers. No biggie, but would really make for nice on-the-fly sound without external cross-overs or overloading passively crossed speakers. The sound is totally acceptable for live audio and I get compliments all the time on the board operations and overall sound quality when I am mixing for bands. I always bring my boards : )

Great mixer, lots of features and very flexible. It's an older model so it may not be available for long.
