I am a finger-style player who books something like 100 entertainment events and 60 church services annually. I practice and compose something like 20 hours a week. I need the extra punch that steel strings give, and the problem with that is that all the playing and practicing I do raises the risk of broken nails. And when a nail breaks, the fingertips can blister. Vicious cycle. I tried conventional metal finger picks, but I could not get them to stay on without adjusting them so tight that they cut off circulation and caused pain. Since conventional picks bend in just the opposite way of the nails, they don't produce the right feel for players who learned in the classical tradition. Kinda by accident, I discovered Alaska Picks. They might not work for everybody, but for me they are perfect, and they have altered my entire approach to playing. I combine Alaska Picks with Jim Dunlop ULTEX thumb picks, and they allow me to play with more clarity than I can with my bare right hand. I should add that I am not a genuine classical guitarist; I am a folk-styled picker who incorporates some classical techniques. So, a serious classical guitarist probably wouldn't be interested in Alaska Picks. But for me they are perfect, and I feel fortunate to have discovered them.

It would have helped to have a measurement scale or such. Since they were inexpensive, it wasn't worth returning, unfortunately.

These are easy to use and make my guitar sound great! You can learn to use them in no time. They are long and can be made shorter per your taste by filing or sanding. Go to the Mfg. web site for sizing chart.

          Can't live without them

          By William Burgan

          from Southern California

Comments about Alaska Pik Finger Guitar Pick:

I've tried a lot things to keep from tearing nails when I play and the only alternative to Alaska picks I've found that permits my playing style is false nails (that destroy my already thin nails). I don't perform without them.

While touring In the mid-60s, substituted a flat pick for a thumb pick to to go back and forth between straight rhythm and finger picking patterns found the flexibility liberating. I eventually began using dental plastic as a false nail on my 3rd, 4th, and 5th fingernails so I could play harder. I stopped using the false nails when I quit touring but found that my nails (which were always thin) would tear if I played with any force. I read about the Alaska picks in a magazine interview with a well known finger picker and after a tough search found a folk music center that carried them. It took a few days of practice to get familiar with the slight technique and feel differences, but after a few weeks, it was remarkably like using false nails. I seldom play guitar now without wearing them.

I also play 5-string banjo and discovered that the Alaska picks work just as well as my finger picks so I stopped using the metal picks (though I do use a thumb pick). A benefit here is that I can now go back and forth between frailing and finger picking in mid-song.

I keep two Alaska picks with every one of my instruments and wouldn't do a live show without them. JB

They last quite a long time, and the only negative I've found is the plastic is not always consistent from pick to pick, so on occasion I get one that will not stay in place. I've also found that they can get flattened if pressed against something in the case, but the plastic has a memory and returns to it's original shape when put into very hot water.
They are a bargain even at full list price

Comments about Alaska Pik Finger Guitar Pick:

Unlike the adjusted picking technique required for standard metal finger picks, the way the "nail" portion of these fits under your own fingernail, it plays just like your own nail. Anyone who has left their picking nails long for the purpose knows how your technique has to vary, depending on how long they are, since they keep chipping and breaking and have to be trimmed and filed. That is all cured with these unique finger picks. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the sizes. I measured the diameters of my fingers per the product chart and found that I should need one medium and one small (I do hybrid picking, flat picking between thumb and index and finger picking with middle and ring). Just to make sure, I covered the range, buying four medium, two small, and two large. My hands and fingers are average-male size, and yet I had to take a pair of needle-nose pliers and bend the two large ones out bigger (even the one on the "small"-charted ring finger). It is as though these picks were sized for skinny children. Anyway, I'm going to order a few spares in "large" and hang onto the rest for emergency resizing - I don't expect these will ever wear out, but I do have a tendency to lose small objects.

These picks need fingernails long enough to go over the pick.(3/16"at least). If I had long enough fingernails, I wouldn't need these picks.

Comments about Alaska Pik Finger Guitar Pick:

I've been using Alaska Piks for about 4 years. I was playing with just my finger tips, but couldn't produce a loud enough sound. I don't do any trimming on them. I wear them and let them wear naturally with my picking style. When they break, I just replace the broken one and start over. Make sure to have a few extras on hand. This is a great product for those of us who don't keep their fingernails very long for finger picking.

                Break too easily

                By Logman

                from Pittsburgh

Comments about Alaska Pik Finger Guitar Pick:

It is a good product idea and I enjoy playing with them, but they break too easily. I keep hoping that they will make them out of a better quality material. There are plenty of incredibly strong ,flexible and sensitive plastics out there. I would buy more of them if the didn't break so easily. Often one rasgueado strum and the thin, downstroke side of the Alaska-Pik breaks through. If they don't soon improve the material quality, I may soon start experimenting myself (with a band saw and various types of plastic tubing).
