I paid much more for this unit a couple years back. I then picked up the 32 track version of this unit. The same just more tracks. I used the computer when I had to because most musicians do some tracks and they want to use them and I got stuck many times attempting to rescue and finalize their mixes. And yes recording to a computer is very tedious and requires an enormous amount of computer savvy to do good recording. I give the computer thumbs up for one reason only and that is to create and write. The computer is so unstable that I do not remember one song that did not give me computer problems, like constant crashing, plug ins that interfered with timing, etc etc. And experienced musicians will tell you of their sad stories of how the band broke up over crashing full album meltdowns. The problem is really all the adware that gets loaded in automatically when loading the computer with installations of software Even major recording studios software is set to back at regular short intervals. But the major studios have outboard gear that costs a fortune. The nice thing about this unit is it has a physical feel of quality and substance. Like a gun collector holding a gun You get a feeling of power when operating it. IT HAS NEVER CRASHED OR GLITCHED EVEN ONCE for me. I do use the computer cause I have to but I can usually talk musicians and producers to let me bounce the tracks they already have to the Tascam where Users can really take advantage of its capability. The tracks can be loaded as wav files right into your computer after editing and ready to go if you need it in the computer and this of course is wonderful if you are looking for a record deal. The legendary band Boston had all their tracks cut before they had a deal and the tracks were mixed in a major studio. Cannot be touched for live recording 8 tracks at once with 32 track input capability. Lots of subbing. And don't forget 250 virtual tracks for several takes

As Rocker103 mentioned in his review, there are tons of features missing in this unit. I have been working on the 2488 and 2488neo and I could not go back to something with less features to what I currently have. I will stick around with my old gear.

Comments about Tascam DP-24SD 24-Track Digital Portastudio:

I had used a Korg D-16 for about fifteen years until it finally stopped working. I'd been eyeing this for a long time and grabbed it when it was the Deal of the Day. I was surprised at the substantialness of it—size (about 20" side to side) and the solidness of its construction. As it was a difficult procedure to get files from the old Korg to my computer, this makes it easy either via USB cable or SD card. I wind up recording on the device, in the comfort of my "studio," and then bringing tracks to the computer for the final mix. I've only had it for a little while, but so far, this is a dream. The sound is great—very pure. The dials and sliders have a very nice feel to them. I did skim through the manual before using but, if you have experience with this type of deck, it's a small learning curve. This is a great piece of equipment!

Comments about Tascam DP-24SD 24-Track Digital Portastudio:

I've had bad luck at PC based DAW programs and getting the associated peripherals to work well. The DP-24SD 24-Track Digital Portastudio has been a god send. Very easy to use and I'm getting professional results - immediately. There's so much more it can do. I'll be learning more as I use it. I'm extremely happy with this unit.

Comments about Tascam DP-24SD 24-Track Digital Portastudio:

I've played in bands for quite some time and rarely one with the cash for studio time. I've borrowed a lot of equipment, but now that I'm older I could finally buy my own. I considered zoom products, but I've used many Rascal units over the years and figured I'd stay with the known quantity.

I'm happy with the choice I made. It's easy enough that my daughters, almost teenagers, have started recording themselves. I haven't had it long, but for what it cost, I feel it was a good buy.

I don't know that it will travel much...more like a computer that a piece of road equipment. But I don't really consider that a con. Got my drums mic'd, added some strings and now I have music. Awesome.

Comments about Tascam DP-24SD 24-Track Digital Portastudio:

This appears to be a well constructed unit for its intended purpose: home recording. The number of direct inputs, versatile pre- and post signal routing for internal and send effects make it an effective addition for the more serious home studio owner.

I personally use pro audio gear on the job and go back 3 decades using Tascam multitrack gear at home. I find DP-24SD a perfect next step for my uses, which are primarily demo production as a songwriter.

First use seemed to be fine. Although adding effects
Hasn't been done yet and is somewhat tricky.
The downfall is that the power source is completely
Dedicated and can only come from tascam.

Comments about Tascam DP-24SD 24-Track Digital Portastudio:

Without MIDI, this unit is useless if you use a drum machine and you want to separate out your snare and bass drum (or other percussion sounds) to different tracks. There is no way to synchronize recording with a drum machine (or any sequencer) so, unless you are recording live with a band, do not buy this product.

I have love this machine so far. This is the first recording machine that I have ever owned. I am a pastor and play in a gospel group. I wanted something that would record with good sound and this unit does just that. They say you can't teach a old dog new tricks. I am 65 years old and I found it to be very easy to operate so far. Our group made our first CD the second night we had it and it turned out great.
