I paid much more for this unit a couple years back. I then picked up the 32 track version of this unit. The same just more tracks. I used the computer when I had to because most musicians do some tracks and they want to use them and I got stuck many times attempting to rescue and finalize their mixes. And yes recording to a computer is very tedious and requires an enormous amount of computer savvy to do good recording. I give the computer thumbs up for one reason only and that is to create and write. The computer is so unstable that I do not remember one song that did not give me computer problems, like constant crashing, plug ins that interfered with timing, etc etc. And experienced musicians will tell you of their sad stories of how the band broke up over crashing full album meltdowns. The problem is really all the adware that gets loaded in automatically when loading the computer with installations of software Even major recording studios software is set to back at regular short intervals. But the major studios have outboard gear that costs a fortune. The nice thing about this unit is it has a physical feel of quality and substance. Like a gun collector holding a gun You get a feeling of power when operating it. IT HAS NEVER CRASHED OR GLITCHED EVEN ONCE for me. I do use the computer cause I have to but I can usually talk musicians and producers to let me bounce the tracks they already have to the Tascam where Users can really take advantage of its capability. The tracks can be loaded as wav files right into your computer after editing and ready to go if you need it in the computer and this of course is wonderful if you are looking for a record deal. The legendary band Boston had all their tracks cut before they had a deal and the tracks were mixed in a major studio. Cannot be touched for live recording 8 tracks at once with 32 track input capability. Lots of subbing. And don't forget 250 virtual tracks for several takes

This is not a toy. This machine is more than I expected. Is built like a tank and it has lots of features. The sound is very clear. Now, because it has so many features it may take a while to learn how to use it, but don't get discourage. I think I made an excellent choice and investment. Tascam is top of the line equipment.

Comments about Tascam DP-24SD 24-Track Digital Portastudio:

I had used a Korg D-16 for about fifteen years until it finally stopped working. I'd been eyeing this for a long time and grabbed it when it was the Deal of the Day. I was surprised at the substantialness of it—size (about 20" side to side) and the solidness of its construction. As it was a difficult procedure to get files from the old Korg to my computer, this makes it easy either via USB cable or SD card. I wind up recording on the device, in the comfort of my "studio," and then bringing tracks to the computer for the final mix. I've only had it for a little while, but so far, this is a dream. The sound is great—very pure. The dials and sliders have a very nice feel to them. I did skim through the manual before using but, if you have experience with this type of deck, it's a small learning curve. This is a great piece of equipment!

Comments about Tascam DP-24SD 24-Track Digital Portastudio:

I have a lot of old recordings on various media going back to the mid 1950's and need to put them on CDs. I also do recording of bands and myself making music. This unit is an up to date and improved version of my Roland 2480 digital recorder studio. Most of the operations are close to the same. Amazing sound quality with very low noise due to great S/N. Instruction manual is printed on thin paper and not easy to read...my only complaint is I'll probably have to make a copy of the pages I need from the Tascam site to get easy to read and more durable instructions. Musician's Friend is the perfect name for this company.

Got mine 2 weeks ago - I resisted the urge to tear it open and start recording right away, because there are a lot of features and settings you'll want to read up on before you even start. (compression, noise suppression, etc) It was worth it because now the little bit I've recorded so far sounds much better then if I had jumped the gun. Study the manual & with a little patience you'll have some high quality tracks in no time!

Comments about Tascam DP-24SD 24-Track Digital Portastudio:

I've owned this unit for a while. I got it for three hundred and thirty monetary units as one of the 'Stupid Deals'. This is a great unit and with bouncing you have unlimited tracks and a number of studio quality effects. The guitar effects aren't that hot but the vocal and ambient effects, echo, reverb, exciter, etc. do exactly what they're supposed to. I use my analog pedals for my guitar, anyway. I've never had to bounce tracks yet but if you have to you can. It records 8 inputs simultaneously so that's enough to record an entire rhythm section in one take. It's also great for live recording. You can use it in conjunction with your computer DAW for adding effects or final production, etc. as long as you follow the instructions on file transfer. I love this thing and didn't see the need to go to the DP-32 since it has most of the features you use every recording session and plenty of tracks.

Comments about Tascam DP-24SD 24-Track Digital Portastudio:

The more I use it, the more I like it. I use it to record raw tracks. The unit connects easily to my computer for exporting tracks to Sonar for post-production. I do draft mixes, then import the stereo draft mix into the unit for adding additional tracks. But there is enough power, enough features and tracks to do complete finished mixes inside the unit if one chose to do so. The screen is small, but quite sufficient for monitoring levels and navigation. The recording quality is excellent. For the price, it's a no-brainer. The Tascam DP24 is an extremely effective tool.

Comments about Tascam DP-24SD 24-Track Digital Portastudio:

It's very adaptable and compatible with other equipment I use. When I use live drums and horns, I use another mixer that enables me to record more instruments still only using the eight simultaneous tracks to record. That allows the other tracks for production.

Comments about Tascam DP-24SD 24-Track Digital Portastudio:

I've played in bands for quite some time and rarely one with the cash for studio time. I've borrowed a lot of equipment, but now that I'm older I could finally buy my own. I considered zoom products, but I've used many Rascal units over the years and figured I'd stay with the known quantity.

I'm happy with the choice I made. It's easy enough that my daughters, almost teenagers, have started recording themselves. I haven't had it long, but for what it cost, I feel it was a good buy.

I don't know that it will travel much...more like a computer that a piece of road equipment. But I don't really consider that a con. Got my drums mic'd, added some strings and now I have music. Awesome.
