I bought one of these SM 58 microphones, even though I don?t think they sound near as good as an EV N/D767a, Audix OM5 or even a Shure Beta 58a. I bought the SM58 because I?m sick and tired of getting flack from sound guys at a gig when I tell them I want to use my own microphone. I don?t like putting my mouth on a microphone that may have been used by someone that was sick with a cold or something. Anyway, I think all these sound guys are really used to the SM58 and have become too lazy to re-adust the settings on their sound board. It would just be sooooooooo much more work for them if they had tweak a knob. Poor guys. Because they are lazy, I had to buy a SM58. A microphone that sounds like a blanket is over it. The SM58 is way overrated. I don?t care how legendary it is considered. It does not sound as good as other microphones. Take your best microphone and put a heavy beach towel over it, if you want it to sound like an SM58.

Still great after all these years

Comments about Shure SM58 Dynamic Handheld Vocal Microphone:

I have to respectfully disagree with my fellow Orlando, Fl. reviewer down from me. I too have used the SM58s and SM57s for almost 40 years for live work and I still love them. True that there are better mics today in terms or texture or sound but the SMs have been around for this long because they are pure, rugged, cheap and they just always work. I blow harmonica and sing lead with a 58 and have been for almost 40 years. I do use other mics for my harp (green bullet etc) and then I mic my harp amps (Fender bassman & Fender Blues DeVille) with SM57s,but always have a 58 on the stand waiting for the vocals. The SM58 & SM57 are an industry standard and we have somewhere around 30+ SM57s & SM58s in our rehersal studio and road cases. Young and upcomming bands, please grab the SMs when you can afford to and keep them. You'll come back to them time and time again I promise. Some of my mics have been with me since the 70s and 80s. I'll write them in a will for my kids LOL.

Comments about Shure SM58 Dynamic Handheld Vocal Microphone:

I replaced my old one (from the 70's) not because it failed, but only because it started smelling a little funny. Being on the road for that long might have something to do with it .. LOL
Can't go wrong with a 58. Best live vox mic on the market ...
I've never had one fail on me yet. Being a drummer, the mic sometimes gets in the way and takes a good shot once in awhile. Still performes as good as always ...
You can't find a better mic for the price ... trust me!

Great mic

By Perry Stotts

from Orem, UT

Comments about Shure SM58 Dynamic Handheld Vocal Microphone:

I've had this microphone for a couple of years now, and it is definitely a great microphone for its price. I record guitar and vocals, plus mandolin and some percussion (tambourine, shaker, etc.) with it in my makeshift studio at home and have been very pleased with it. If you would like to hear a sample of how it sounds, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eROfig4Spc.

Comments about Shure SM58 Dynamic Handheld Vocal Microphone:

I had a couple Peavey Mics for about 30 years and they performed well for me. When I bought two new mics, I got the Seinheiser 845 mics. They sounded good, but I had to keep my mouth on the mics for the sound to come through. Then, I got a couple Shure SM58 mics based on suggestions from others. The Shure SM58 mics sound good and have a larger pickup range. This makes my voice come through the mix without yelling. This is a very good mic.

Comments about Shure SM58 Dynamic Handheld Vocal Microphone:

Probably the most common mic on the market,(and by probably I mean most definitely.) It is great for live performances because you can drop kick it across the stage and your foot will be hurt more than the mic. Although, if you are serious about recording, condenser mics are the way to go. Try to get this mic in a combo pack if you can (with a stand and cable.) You will not be dissappointed! (unless of course you actually try to drop kick it across a stage. That was just a metaphor.)

Everyone will own one these great Mics

Comments about Shure SM58 Dynamic Handheld Vocal Microphone:

I have bought several other mics, many almost as expensive. I am comparing live sound - all over the stage - mics, not fixed stand or studio mics. Nady makes some decent sounding mics, from very cheap to about the same price, but they are usually fragile, and the cheaper you go, the worse the handling noise. AKG makes some very nice mics, but I felt that they were harder mic properly for live sound use. Too bright / hot up close, and too muted / dull as you move away. Behringer has a great return /repair policy, but I need my mics on stage, not in the mail. In the end, every mic I have used gets compared back to SM-58, and it simply is the right mic 90% of the time.
Very tough, and the handling noise is very low compared to 'cheap' mics.
These are built very well, and while you should not drop any mic, these seem to handle it pretty well.
There are Cheaper mics, but you get what you pay for. It seems most of the cheaper mics always get broken, have poor sound qualities, more handling noise, and usually much cheaper construction.

Comments about Shure SM58 Dynamic Handheld Vocal Microphone:

Overall, you cant go wrong with this mic as far as quality. Infact i dont think I have ever seen a dead one yet in over 20yrs of running sound and owning sm 58's. But the price verses like the Senhiser E series, is no where close. Its the total package. ANY E series mic will kill versus the sm58. They have better sound, built just as tough, and look nicer, and you can get 2 of almost any of them to the price of an sm58.

So, my final word is that shure is good. But that they are makeing us pay to much for the level these mics are now. They are quality, but basic mics.
What can I say. It's a dynamic mic. Not much to it. Everyones got one on the market modeled after this mic. It's the standard, because you dont change the standard thats been around for decades.
Perfect. Will almost never die. Throw it against a brick wall some time. You'll see more damage to the wall than the mic. And the mic will still work.
This is where I dont like these mics anymore. To expensievefor whats on the market right now. Behringer, AKG, Senhiser, Samson, ect. has an idenical mic, thats just as good for half the price. But there good mics that are the same as say the sure beta series, are the same as the standard sm 58. So your paying for a name.
