I have had this tuner for about 20 years. That's a lot of 9V batteries, but I never had issue with the tuner. I never figured out why the guitar/bass selector is there. I use the chromatic setting and tune all over what ever instrument I am using. I use it on guitars/bass/saxophones (with a Peterson pickup) and have always been happy with the results. It will hesitate on a string with a lot of harmonics until the string settles down, and the mic is on the bottom if you set on a stand to tune acoustics. It seems to hear the tone anyway. You can plug through to an amp, but the switch is hard to get to.

I bought my Tu-12 in Okinawa in 1990. 21 years later, it works as well as the first day I got it. I am pleased to see that they have held their value. I haven't needed another tuner at all. The plastic joints on the folding cover wore out pretty quick, but the case was saved with duct tape and still works to protect the unit just fine.

This is a great tuner, it will last you forever and is precise enough for setting the intonation on your guitar. It is more accurate and precise than the TU-2 stompbox tuner, but is a bit harder to read if you're on a blacked out stage. I also wouldn't run this in your effects chain, it will suck some tone. I have it plugged into the dry out of my Digitech Whammy so my signal guitar's signal doesn't pass through it on the way to my amp. All in all it will serve you well for many years, and the price is pretty reasonable.
Had mine for over 15 years. Needle is awesome, I prefer it over other indicators. Internal mic still works great for acoustic.
I got this tuner in the mail recently and it works very well, except on 5 string basses. It doesn't even register a low B. It worked great with my 4 string, but when i went to my 5 string, it just couldn't tune the low B. I had to play an E on the B sting and it still had trouble picking it up.So, if you only have a 4 string bass or you are a guitarist, this tuner will be GREAT for you! But if you are getting it for a 5 string bass, you should probably go with the TU-15.
As best as can remember my TU-12 has been with me since 1985. This is the Strat, Tele, Les Paul, of tuners. IT JUST WORKS.
Yes, I have owned this little beast for over twenty eight years and it is still flawless except if you are using a battery, which I do not. The battery compartment is a little too tight for the battery. At least in the one I bought decades ago.
I've had this tuner for longer than I can remember--and I've been playing for almost 40 years. By far--effects have come and gone--and guitars have come and gone--but they all get tuned with this tuner. If you want a tuner that will out last and preform when you need it to--buy this tuner! There may be more expenisve one and there may be less expensive one--but this tuner is the Boss!
Perfect for either a Pedal Board or to carry in your Gig bag. Nice simple features. I have this for my practice rig and I bought the TU-2 for my Pedal Board. Boss did a good job with both of these. I hear some guys complaining about the price, but hell you get what you pay for. I highly recommend for anyone.
Well, I felt compelled to write this review because my trusted companion, the TU-12, just turned 26 years old. I just bought a brand new 2006 Tele and used the TU-12 to set the intonation. It is sheer perfection! I have used many, many other tuners over 26 years, but I keep going back to this one. When my band gets together, they all wait patiently for the TU-12, even though they all have their own tuners, either stand-alone or built into pedals. Buy it and keep it for life! It really is The Boss!
I have been gigging longer than many of you reading this have been breathing. For that matter, my Boss TU-12 tuner has been working perfectly longer than many of you have been breathing! I bought this item in 1984 at the recommendation of another musician and it has been absolutely relentless in providing me great service. It even got rained on at an outdoor July 4th gig in Dallas (2006) and is still going! I would insist you buy this unit if you want perfection and ease of use.
