OVERVIEW

Re-engineered to be stronger for enhanced output.

Gauges 9-11-16-24-32-42

D'Addario NYXL guitar strings will bend farther, sing louder, and stay in tune better than other strings. Envisioned, perfected, and manufactured by D'Addario in New York, this newly engineered, break-resistant high-carbon steel core and plain steel alloy delivers a whole new level of freedom, confidence, and power. NYXL's provide more strength and 131% more tuning stability by utilizing a completely reinvented wire drawing process and revolutionary corrosion-resistant tin coating application. The reformulated nickel-plated string windings have greater magnetic properties resulting in higher output and enhanced mid-range frequency response for more presence and crunch. The NYXL0942 set is designed for maximum flexibility.

FEATURES
  • Features D'Addario's exclusive revolutionary high carbon steel alloy
  • Offers more strength, break-resistance, and improved tuning stability compared to traditional nickel wound strings
  • Wound strings contain enhanced mid-range frequency response in the 1-3.5kHz range - boosting presence and crunch
  • Environmentally friendly, corrosion-resistant packaging for strings that are always fresh

D-Addario has taken a leap forward with the introduction of its NYXL strings. I use the Super Lights and could not be more impressed with their strength and ability to bend while staying in tune. It's also a string with the ability to sound delicate, but by no means is it a delicate string. Bravo, D-Addario!

Before purchasing, I read reviews here and at other sources. With all the hype surrounding the NYXL's, I would read how some people would have the high E break on them. I would think that maybe they had a burr on their bridge and didn't realize it. Since I keep my guitar in top performance condition at all times, I figured I wouldn't have this problem. After visiting D'Addarios NYXL site, I figured I would spend the extra cash and give them a try.
I had used D'Addarios for almost 20 years constantly. The past few years I noticed the EXL's seemed to tarnish very quickly and go dead in short order. I figured maybe it was an issue with whoever supplied them with their wire stock. So I switched to Dunlops and have been VERY happy with their tone, feel and longevity. So I started to string up my axe with the new NYXL's and what's the first thing that happens? SNAP!! The high E string breaks right at my Floyd bridge. I thought, "Well, here we go!" So much for the claim that they are "stronger". I had plenty of winds on the post to pull it down and restring it. After restringing my guitar, I noticed NO difference in stretch in time. In fact, the Dunlops I use stretch in and settle into tune much quicker. So that claim is bogus in my opinion. Now they did feel great at first. But no better than the Dunlops. The NYXL's tone was just a touch more pronounced in the high end, but that died rather quickly. Long lasting tone? Nope. After only 1 day of playing them, I noticed that very familiar tarnished metal smell that I got before with the regular EXL's. Another day later, after playing, black tarnish on my fingers. Very disappointing.
I really wanted to like these strings since I used to be such a longtime user of D'Addarios. But unfortunately, these have the same problem with tarnishing and losing tone quickly. So back to Dunlops it is for me. They feel great. Hold their tone and tuning better. Bend easily and last MUCH longer than the NYXL's.

They're kind of expensive especially when you have to change weekly. If you're outside or under hot stage light, they don't last much longer than slinkies.

These just had a tone I didn't like. Some may like it, but I prefer the traditional tone I am used to. They have a mid range punch that you have to like. I didn't. Plain old EXL120's just sound right to me. That being said, there was nothing wrong with the quality of the strings. They also felt like they had more tension than the EXL120's even though they spec out at the same string tension. So being old school, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. There's a reason the EXL120's sound good.

Comments about D'Addario NYXL0942 Super Light Electric Guitar Strings:

I am admittedly a heavy-handed country player. I had heard that these strings were excellent for benders like myself, and I was looking to try some different strings. I was sorely disappointed from the minute I put them on. I couldn't get them into tune initially, and they felt super flimsy. I was afraid to strum as hard as I usually do, so I played differently and didn't really enjoy the gig. I think these might be better for Gibson or PRS players; a Fender (Strat & Tele) just doesn't seem like a good fit. Never again.

These strings are so good I just had to help promote them to others so they will remain in production and continue to be available. They are clearer, seem to hold intonation better, and are more elastic than standard D'Adarrio strings, yet they have no less warmth, or fatness, of tone. More costly for now, but I won't go back to EXL110s, even though I have almost twenty sets of them I thought I would be using. They are great strings, too, but these are obviously better to me.
