Excellent choice for blues or rock players with a wound and plain G string.

Made of nickel-plated steel, Dean Markley HELIX HD electric guitar strings are a little heavier with a wound and a plain G string so you can get deeper into the low-end grooves. It took over a year and many trials for the Dean Markley team to find the precise elliptical shape for the winding wire that makes up the patent-pending, Hyper-Elliptical Winding process of the Helix HD. This shape then had to be paired with the correct winding process that would produce these stupendous results—the maximum mass for the string's diameter that still maintained the string's vibrancy.

The Hyper-Elliptical Winding process results in an increased number of wraps along the length of the string. This increases the mass of your electric guitar string, without changing its diameter or material.

More mass makes a fuller tone; more windings give a smoother feel as well as a brighter, more resonant tone. This provides a smoothness and performance unrivaled by conventional electric guitar strings.

When you press and strum a normal wrap wire, your fingers experience resistance as they go down into each depression between the wraps. With the Dean Markley HELIX HD guitar strings you'll experience smoothness. These less coarse wrappings let your fingers glide more easily and smoothly along the surface of the wrap wire.

Comments about Dean Markley HELIX HD Electric Guitar Strings (MED):

I just stated using Dean Markley Helix strings and I'm amazed at the difference on my Strat andn SG. I was using D'Adarrio and these are much brighter, push more signal through my pickups and last WAY longer. I've noticed increased low end on my acoustic guitar too, which is awesome. What an easy way to get better tone!

Comments about Dean Markley HELIX HD Electric Guitar Strings (MED):

These are the best strings I have ever played. I bought a pack a month ago and they still sound awesome! I just went back and bought 10 more sets. I read some other reviews and it sounds like your guitars are not intonated properly. These strings are strong, do not break and have tone and sustain for days. I use to play Elixir and now I can tell my tone was muted. Thank you Dean Markley! I play country, Blue Grass, Rock and Blues.

unstable, not nearly as good as the description sounds

Comments about Dean Markley HELIX HD Electric Guitar Strings (MED):

sound is ok, not as "bright" or "resonant" as Markley's description implies (but then I like D'Addario XL's a lot). The package advertises both a wound and plain "G" string, but when I opened the pack I only had the wound string, no plain string. Both of these issues would be tolerable if not for the "big one": they WILL NOT stay in tune for more than a few minutes, definitely not through a whole song. They're installed correctly (tuned down a whole-step to "D" tuning), stretched adequately, intonated properly, everything - but no luck on tuning stability. Besides watching open notes fluctuate on my tuner, i can pick a low open string and HEAR IT WARBLE up and down slightly - i have NEVER seen or heard this from any other type of string, including other Dean Markleys. They've only been on the guitar for maybe a week, but I'm already at the point of changing them out; it's way too frustrating to not be able to stay in tune for 5 minutes at a time. At least they weren't super-expensive.

      Good, but not for me

Comments about Dean Markley HELIX HD Electric Guitar Strings (MED):

I probably won't get these again, because I like to bend my notes. With the extra winds, the strings are much harder to bend. For metal, these would be OK, but they are not the string for me. For the price, I would recommend you get a set and see if they are for you, though.
The description says that these strings have more windings, and this is true. There are barely more than a normal set of strings. You do notice a difference in the looks, but that's about it.
My strings arrived with a few oxidation spots on the B string. This is why I gave a low rating here.
Fair price. They are pretty much the same price as anything else out there.

      New Set of Strings

Comments about Dean Markley HELIX HD Electric Guitar Strings (MED):

I'd been using Blue Steel strings and decided to give Helix a shot. Put them on last night and they felt lot different--greater mass, like DM says. The mass is only greater on the three wound strings, though, so it makes the guitar neck feel a little unbalanced. They feel kind of hard too.

The ad said, "greater mass, better tone," and I was trying to figure out what that meant.

I was playing clean chords and felt like strings were too "hard." Felt the same way when I was playing some blues solos/licks. Couldn't get the bend and snap like I usually enjoy.

But when I threw it on distortion...watch out! I finally found the advantage of these strings. You play power chords and they sound powerful! These strings are for punk rockers!

I guess I should record my rock songs while I've got the Helix's on, and then I will probably go back to Blue Steel for open chord folk and blues.
