OVERVIEW

Excellent vintage tone with today's tech benefits.

The DiMarzio DP223 PAF bridge position humbucker pickup uses new technology to duplicate the qualities of vintage electric guitar pickups--without sacrificing the presence and open sound of the best vintage humbuckers. This 36th anniversary PAF bridge pickup, a hotter version of the PAF, isn't just for set-neck 24-3/4" scale guitars, but is also an excellent bridge pickup for tremolo-equipped bolt-on neck guitars.

There was no such thing as a neck or bridge humbucker in the 1950s, but there was a wide range of performance between individual pickups that made some better suited to one position. Some of the old pickups had a lot of wire on the coils, which created more power and a warmer tone.

Want to go totally retro? The DiMarzio DP223 PAF Bridge pickup in standard spacing is also available with authentic vintage bobbins in glossy black, glossy double cream or glossy black and cream zebra; vintage "Patent Applied For" long-legged nickel-silver base, 1-conductor cable and your choice of polished and plated or vintage worn cover.

The 36th anniversary DiMarzio DP223 pickup is recommended for: Bridge position, can also be used in neck position with hotter bridge models.

Tech Talk: The DiMarzio PAF bridge pickup has the best qualities of the Virtual PAF bridge and Virtual Hot PAF pickups and then some. It's as loud as the VHPAF but has as much low-end and midrange definition as the VPAF bridge model. The highs are actually bigger and smoother than either model. The 4-conductor version also splits very well. Single-coil mode is bright, but not at all sterile-sounding.

I've been playing for nearly 30 years, and admittedly I've been a "Dimarzio guy" for much of that time. My typical guitar was an ash/alder super-strat with a Tone Zone in the bridge position. I've tried a variety of other pickups, but I kept coming back to that sound.

Last year I built a custom Warmoth Explorer (all mahogany, maple neck, OFR tremolo) and decided to give the SD JB pickup a shot. I was worried such a thick slab of mahogany would sound undefined and muddy with my usual Tone Zone. The JB sounded pretty good for a while until I realized there was a noch in the mid-range and a spike in the upper mids that I just couldn't EQ out. Boy did I try to EQ it out, but it just wasn't happening. Live recordings revealed the JB sounded thin and sterile in that particular guitar. There was no way around it; multiple live recordings don't lie.

After some research I settled on the DP223 in the bridge and the DP103 in the neck. It is a vast, vast improvement. The last few gigs my tone has been thick, rich, warm, and loaded with harmonics, while still retaining the clarity I wanted. This pickup is responsive to variations in picking, and cleans up nicely by rolling off the volume knob. I play a variety of music from low to very high gain and this pickup does it all.

I also have both the DP223 and DP103 split and they sound awesome this way as well. Of course they don't quack like single coils in a strat, but they work really well for clean picked lines/chords, etc.

Overall I must say I'm extremely pleased with the feel and sound of my guitar now. These pickups were the final pieces of the puzzle for me. I have never in my years of playing been as satisfied with my tone as I have been since these were installed.

I recently purchased a PRS Single cut SE for playing live. Not the quality of my Gibson Les Paul Custom, but a less expensive quality guitar that could take the rigors of live performance and still sound good.

I decided to upgrade the stock pickups to get a better quality sound. I heard the Gibson 57' Classic's, Dimarzio and Seymour Duncan were all about the same. (NOT! Read on.)

I looked at the price of all 3 brands and decided on the Dimarzio DP103 and DP223. The Gibson's were twice price. I then had the best guitar work guy in the state install the new Dimarzio pickups.

I soon discovered why there was such a price difference between Gibson and Dimarzio. And it is NOT just the name brand thing. The Dimarzio DP 103 and DP 223 pickups are poor at best. And that's being way to kind.

The pickups are very thin sounding, no warmth, no bottom end, no roundness! They were so trebly and "twangy" sounding that the guitar sounded more like a really cheap single coil Stratocaster than a PRS with Humbucker's. Frankly, Dimarzio pickups do not rate one star.

But it gets worse. Read on.

One of the reasons I chose the Dimazio was they have an "exchange" program. Supposedly if you are unhappy with the product they will exchange for a different pickup. Yeah right!

So I called Dimarzio and spoke to their "tech support" guy. I politely explained the pickups were just not the sound I expected and would like to exchange them for one of their other pickup models. From the start, he was extremely rude. I was told there was nothing wrong with the pickups and there was no way Dimarzio would exchange them. Period!

I politely asked again, saying that I really needed to exchange them and was there someone in management that I could appeal to for an exchange. The Dimarzio "Tech Support" guy replied NO! "Not going to happen". Period! Without a doubt this was the rudest and worse support I have ever encountered in my musical career. (I suspect they only have one "Support Guy" too. I finally advised him, I would probably have to return them to the retailer then. He said "You do what you have to do", And then he hung up on me.

So that's just what I did. I returned them. Musician's Friend is awesome. I had no such problems with them. They happily exchanged them for the Gibson 57' Classic and Classic plus no problem. And WOW! What a Difference. Pay the extra amount for the Gibson 57' Classic's. They have an incredible sound that just keeps giving. Just go read the reviews on the Gibson's. They are all true.

Avoid Dimarzio products like the plague. Trust me. This is THE review to read for the Dimarzio pickups. Buyer beware.

Great Classic Rock Humbucker

Comments about DiMarzio DP223 PAF Bridge Humbucker 36th Anniversary Electric Guitar Pickup:

As good as advertised... Replaced a Dimarzio AirZone in the bridge of my Custom Fat Strat. Great [BEST I HAVE FOUND] for covering 60s - 80s rock grit. Nice mids very pronounced and detailed, nice bottom, nice top end. This pickup splits well - retains tonal qualities just sounds slightly thinner as you would expect. No regrets at all...

Comments about DiMarzio DP223 PAF Bridge Humbucker 36th Anniversary Electric Guitar Pickup:

I would like to state that I am not a fan of most Seymour Duncan pickups so if you love them my opinions may be non-useful. I have used the Dimarzio Air Classics for the last 10 years in all of my performing guitars and I REALLY love them. I got a 335 recently and thought I would give the 36th Aniversary pickups a shot. Unlike the Air Classics, the PAFs are a bit hot (even though the voltage ratings would suggest otherwise). This gives these a great drive and a monumental amount of dynamic range but while adjusting the volume control will obviously lower the gain, it does more to really lower the volume than the gain. These pickups are similar in their feel to a Duncan 59' with more mids but I still prefer the Air Classics. I would recomend them to a classic rocker but not a versatile union jobber.

TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING IS STILL A GOOD THING!!!!

Comments about DiMarzio DP223 PAF Bridge Humbucker 36th Anniversary Electric Guitar Pickup:

i recently purchased a mexican made strat with the humbucker and two single coil combination. My intention when I purchased the guitar was to upgrade the electronics right away. I found that it was a lot less money to upgrade the mexican strat than it was to go for the american standard right from the get go...i know this may sound crazy..but, over the years ive come to favor my modified mexican strats over my american standards. dont get me wrong, i love my american built strats, it just makes more sense to me to "bastardize" the cheaper ones for what im looking for than messing around with the more exspensive ones...therefore i play the modified ones more.
i had some dimarzio hjm dp217's left over from years ago for the kneck and middle position, and i have to say.. the DP223 PAF bridge pick up was the perfect choice to balance out the sound of that guitar..from strat to strat on steroids. the sound is so bright and clean...but at the same time very hot and massive when driven. the sound is incredible..it transformed my strat into a tone hog..i cant put it down...my other guitars must be getting jealous.

Great Vintage tone in the Neck...

Comments about DiMarzio DP223 PAF Bridge Humbucker 36th Anniversary Electric Guitar Pickup:

Have this in the neck with a Super Distortion in the bridge position. Great combo in a les paul copy i have. In the neck position, the best way i can describe it is if Stevie Ray Vaughn had played a LP instead of a Strat. Super nice warm vintage tone that responds well to pick attack with a bell like chiming quality to it. great for blues or Santana type tone leads, but not muddy. Can't believe how good my cheap guitar sounds with this PU and the DP 100 in the bridge.

Great pickup. I replaced the muddy EMGs in my ESP LTD Viper 301. The pickup opened up the guitar. Can't say enough good things about the sweet harmonics and note definition. Hit a power chord and each note rings out. The bottom end is tight, and the top end is sweet. If you're looking for a vintage PAF-style pickup that sounds awesome, look no further. I loved it so much, I replaced the harsh-sounding BurstBucker 3 in my LP with one.

Comments about DiMarzio DP223 PAF Bridge Humbucker 36th Anniversary Electric Guitar Pickup:

I replaced a pair of soapbar pickups on a Les Paul 54 re-issue. The soapbars were ok but excessively noisy. I also replaced the bridge with a DiMarzio DP 103. These pickups really respond to pick attack and deliver a sweet vintage tone unlike any humbucking pickup I have encountered. I would buy them again. They initially took some getting used to as the tone is unique.

Comments about DiMarzio DP223 PAF Bridge Humbucker 36th Anniversary Electric Guitar Pickup:

I was a little weary about purchasing a pickup with no reviews but I decided to go for it as a Christmas present and it was well worth it. I opted for the creme bridge model for my Les Paul, it sounds quite good. A total difference between it and the previous stock Epiphone pickups. I haven't tried any other kinds of pickups before though so my opinion may not be worth much, but its much better then stock, I don't have to be an expert to see that. The price is the best around, I'd say go for it if you have a lower priced guitar and are looking for a classic rock or heavy blues sound. Very good with my Throbak Stone Bender, quite Zeppelin-esque.

I purchased the DP223 for my HSS Mexican Strat. It improved the tone quality 10 fold. It has even lows, mids, and highs. Every note in a chord is well defined. It took out the midrange snarl and muddy lows of the Mexican stock PU. Also works well for lead work. However this PU is a titch more high gain so I plug into the low gain input of my amp. This gives me killer distortion, and warm clean tones. I can play without an EQ now. I will purchace more of these for my other guitars
