OVERVIEW

A vintage Tele cover with no sacrifice in sound quality or power.

DiMarzio believes the Area '58 and Area '61 are a major step forward in the performance of hum cancelling Strat replacement pickups. The technology that went into the DP417 models has allowed them to make a similar advance with Telecaster guitar pickups. The Area T neck model has the combination of clarity and warmth that Telecaster players have always sought.

The DP417 pickup is recommended for the neck.

Tech Talk: The contrast between a warm neck pickup tone and a biting bridge pickup sound is a Tele hallmark, but it's hard to achieve if the neck pickup is muddy. The Area T neck model has a very smooth tone, but its ability to remain clear even with heavy overdrive is an essential quality of Area design. The Area T pickup was designed to work with 250K controls, but treble response and output can be increased by using 500K volume and tone controls or tweaked further with a 250K volume and the EP1202 1 Megohm tone control.

I've been working with this pickup for a few months now. At first I was disappointed because I thought it's output was way too high for a Tele pickup. I've learned that there were 2 things I needed to adjust to really make this pickup shine: 1. Adjust the pickup's height. I was originally using the same pickup height as I was using with the stock pickup. Don't be affraid to adjust it higher or lower to find the sweet spot. 2. I needed to adjust my amp, EQ, and overdrive pedal settings to provide less gain and less bass. After that, I got that Alnico II sound I've been dying for! I will never give any pickup a 5 out of 5, but this one has really pleased me now that I've learned how to make it shine.

I installed the DiMarzio DP417 and DP413 pickups in my 2005 Fender MIM (made in mexico) Tele. (Ash body, Maple neck). I liked the sound of the tele prior to this modification with 2 exceptions: The standard bridge pickup was a little to bright, and the guitar had to much HUM!!! The hum was the reason for the supposed "upgrade". I could compensate for the bright sound of the bridge pickup with tone adjustments, but the hum was terrible, especially playing alone at home, or when recording. Granted, the room I play in is loaded with computers, TV's, monitors and other electronics that annoy the single coils. I'll take the hum over the sound of the new DiMrzios. The guitar is now very nondescript. The tele twang is gone. It doesn't even sound like a tele anymore. If I was blindfolded, I wouldn't even know I was playing a tele in the neck or middle position. The bridge pickup alone sounds vaguely like a tele. Vaguely. I did do the install myself, and I am not a Luthier, but I don't think my work is the problem. I will be calling Dimarzio tomorrow to see what they have to say, and I will re-post with the outcome of that conversation. I've played the guitar through a Fender Deville and a Blues Junior. I am a mediocre intermediate guitarist who has been playing for 40 years. I wish I could better put into words how the pickups do sound. All I know is the Tele sound is gone.

Comments about DiMarzio DP417 Area T Tele Neck Pickup:

Let me start off by saying that this pickup has very good sound quality, and sounds like a tele neck pickup. If you're looking to use it with the regular Area T pickup, you probably can't go wrong - it sounds just as good to me as any noiseless pickup from a boutique manufacturer for twice the price.

On the downside, I purchased this pickup to use in a three pickup tele, which has an Area T Hot in the bridge and an Area 58 in the middle position. The bridge pickup is obviously "hot" compared to a regular tele pickup. But, the Area 58 meshes well with it in terms of output. On the other hand, the Area T Neck is too quiet even compared to the Area 58 (yes, you can push the 58 and the ATH all the way down, and the ATN all the way up, but it ruins the quality of the sound, especially with the 58). I'm surprised that DiMarzio sells the Area T Neck and Hot as a set. They just don't work well together. I would love to see DiMarzio put out a hotter Area T Neck pickup to go with the Area T Hot or 615.

Comments about DiMarzio DP417 Area T Tele Neck Pickup:

Installed this together with a bridge Chopper T. Am so happy i decided to take a leap and replace the stock tele pickups of a Tokai guitar. Night and day in terms of quietness since it is a hum cancelling pickup. but more than that, i am very happy to say that the tone really improved (got a little bigger and less ice picky). the vintage tone is still there to be honest but as i've said it's a small notch /less twangy. but it's still there if i need it, just a matter of adjusting volume and tones...

overall for my taste, it was a great upgrade to install Area T (neck)!

Comments about DiMarzio DP417 Area T Tele Neck Pickup:

This is a great sounding Tele neck pickup! The fact that it is hum-cancelling is icing on the cake. Output is a little more than a traditional Tele neck pickup. The tone is warm and a bit scooped with some sparkly high end - never muddy and somewhat Strat-like which is OK with me. Still sounds great for jazz tones with the treble rolled off on the guitar. Very happy with it. I would only suggest to DiMarzio that they use a little heavier gauge wire for the hot, ground, and bridge cover hookup. Those wires seem a bit fragile, but function fine. Overall, very happy with this pickup, especially for a hum-cancelling design.

Comments about DiMarzio DP417 Area T Tele Neck Pickup:

Works just like it says. Super easy installation (love DiMarzio for that), sounds just like a REALLY nice tele pickup, just without the noise. I think it's got slightly less mids than a regular tele pickup, but it sounds cleaner and better overall. Very happy with it ^_^

Comments about DiMarzio DP417 Area T Tele Neck Pickup:

I purchased an Area Hot T bridge pup to replace a broadcaster style pickup in a 2013 american tele. I got this to match even though I liked the twisted tele neck pickup tone just fine. Not too difficult to install except that the screws that fasten this Area T neck pickup to the pick guard are too long. The mounting screws bottom out in the pickup cavity. I tried using the screws off the twisted tele pickup but they were a different diameter (smaller). So i just screwed these down until I took up the slack to the spring between the pickup and the pick guard and chopped off the excess screw end, about 3-4mm. Not difficult to chop, I just used the side cutters on a pair of large needle nose pliers. It sounds good, but I kind of raised an eyebrow at the tiny gauge wiring off both pickups (like hair thin).

                    • It Does It All Well

Comments about DiMarzio DP417 Area T Tele Neck Pickup:

After installing an Area 61 on one of my Strats, I was sold on the Area technology so I am replacing all my single-coil pups with them as I can afford it. I ordered these Tele pickups with confidence they would exceed my expectations. One of my requirements is quiet, hum-free sound for recording - even on high-gain settings, Tube Screamer, etc. Lots of pickups sound great but few can match the silence of these pups.

I prefer DiMarzio as a brand because they are clean and easy to work with. I have a lot of guitars and enjoy switching things around just for variety, and I dislike the wax mess with some Duncans. (Hot Rail excluded, love that pup)

They are also more consistent with the wiring from one pup/model to the next, if you're into the Frankenstrat/tele thing that helps keeping them all straight.

You can't go wrong with any of these Area series pups, they retain the original sound of the instrument and you won't hear any hum. Crystal clean, great for DAW recording work. I also like that the poles do not accentuate the unwound strings, DiMarzio 'gets it' on that. I dislike pups with one real high pole on any string for that matter.

Last but not least, tip of the hat to Musicians Friend, this has become my go-to place for most of my music supplies. Good prices, stock, service, shipping, and you get my order right every time. That's all I ask for but it's not that easy to find.

This pickup works for me. Not as twangy, a little warmer and no hum. It has its own voice which I liked. When I installed it the supplied springs did not work and it was loose in the aftermarket pickguard. I used 4 of the fender pick up tubing and that worked well.
