Tone and power of active 7-string pickups without the battery hassle.

Recommended for bridge position.

Active humbuckers have a distinctive sound. They're powerful, clean, open sounding, with excellent harmonic overtones and very tight lows. This also fits the description of a great 7-string pickup, if the problems associated with active guitar pickups — sterile sound and limited headroom — could be eliminated. The DP720 D Activator 7 bridge model does just that. It has the same loud yet clean sound as the best active humbuckers, and killer harmonics. The low B string is all about attack, not mud. It responds instantly to hard or light picking. In a word, it rocks. No batteries required.

Tech Talk: Like the 6-string version, the bridge D Activator 7 has a very focused attack that hits the amp hard and makes it feel more powerful than it actually specs out to be. DiMarzio also wanted to avoid the limiting effect that can occur with active pickups when they are played hard. This bridge pickup is passive with a lot of headroom, and it responds quickly and accurately to changes in pick attack. A hard pick attack doesn't cause the signal to flatten out, and picking more softly or rolling the volume control down lets the sound clean up naturally. Like all passive pickups, DiMarzio's D Activators require controls with a minimum value of 250Kohms. 500K is the standard all around value, and our 1Megohm tone control is best for long cable runs.

Comments about DiMarzio DP720 D Activator 7-String Bridge Humbucker Pickup:

I was looking for a pickup to install in my Ibanez RG7321 to record with in the studio, and from all the pickups I looked into, this one seemed like the best deal. I've never been a fan of active pickups, but there were certain qualities about them I did like, things that passive pickups couldn't produce. The D Activator has a smooth even tone, and can really crunch with high gain tones. The cleans I was able to get out of this were also really surprising, they sounded clear and full. If you're on a budget, this is a good choice for a bridge pickup.

Comments about DiMarzio DP720 D Activator 7-String Bridge Humbucker Pickup:

I installed this into the bridge of a Dean VNXM 7. It needed a new pup as the stock ones werent very good. I am Highly pleased with it. It is high output yet produces stellar cleans as well. I use it with a peavey vypyr amp. It has a somewhat sterile yet still organic sound. The EQ is perfectly balanced. Great midrange, solid chunky low end, and crisp but not shrill high end. It is perfect for really heavy metal and metal core. It's probably good for rock and stuff too, but i don't really play much more than hardcore and metal. When i was picking out a new pick up I knew i wanted to go with dimarzio but I wans't sure which one. I made a good decision.

Comments about DiMarzio DP720 D Activator 7-String Bridge Humbucker Pickup:

I bought this pickup for my RG7321 after replacing the Blaze pickups because they seemed to appeal to my taste in music (metal) better. I didn't want to route out my pickup cavity for emgs (it's not really a reversable mod btw) and batteries didn't seem like an option after I discovered some of my favorite new bands use passive pickups (Periphery, Animals As Leaders, Whitechapel). So far I am very pleased with the tone I'm getting from my RG, the distorted tones track fast and when I tune down (a whole step from standard ADGCFAD) it doesn't sound muddy at all, the only thing i had to change was redrilling the mounting holes of the pickup to accommodate the holes in my RG7321 (direct mounting, no pickup rings). I would recommend this pickup to anyone looking for a tight passive pickup that's easy on the wallet and best of all, no batteries to worry about!

        this guy is wrong...

Comments about DiMarzio DP720 D Activator 7-String Bridge Humbucker Pickup:

so yeah. the guy saying that he gets no sustain is an idiot. that is obviously a problem with your guitar. if you have to push down so hard on the strings that your fingers hurt, then use a lesser guage string or lower your action. these pick ups have more sustain that anything i have used, and concidering that i have literally owned every seymour duncan on the market (humbuckers) that is saying something. as for lacking tonal charictoristics... that would be a problem with your stings. lower the guage. oh... your sustain will increase then.

Not as great as I hoped

        By MXR fan

        from NY,NY

Comments about DiMarzio DP720 D Activator 7-String Bridge Humbucker Pickup:

I was using this pickup in my Schecter 007 Elite(Mahogany/Maple/Rosewood) for about a year as a replacement for the stock duncan designed bridge pickup. I have another 7 string with EMG's in it so I was interested to see how they compared. At first I was really impressed by the amount of punch the D Activator has. The attack seems much more focused than the EMG's probably because the dynamics are less compressed on a passive humbucker. However, after using this pickup for a while I begain to notice that it really lacks character. Its tone is concentrated around a very powerful punch but the sustain dies away way too quickly and holding notes for a long time is hard. When playing clean I found myself pressing so hard on the strings just to get notes out that my hand hurt(I've been playing 14 years so it's not like this is a normal issue for me). I ended up switching this pickup for a Duncan JB and I get all the sustain and character that I was missing plus punch and harmonics that are just as good as the D Activator can produce. I would say that the D Activator could be a good pickup if all you play is stuff like Meshuggah or Norma Jean (stuff that doesn't really require much more than speed and lots of gain). If you're comparing these to EMG's, I think EMG's have a better feel to them...way more sustain and versatility.
