OVERVIEW

Designed with live gigs in mind, but make great recording pickups too.

The DiMarzio Steve Vai Evolution Humbucker Set contains 3 well-designed pickups: the Evolution Neck F-spaced (neck), the Evolution V2 Middle (middle), and the Evolution Bridge F-spaced (bridge). Easy to install, they'll bring a collection of Steve's favorite tones to your guitar while reducing noise.

The Evolution Neck and Bridge humbuckers are the result of two years of research to come up with the right sound for a very demanding player: Steve Vai and his Ibanez Jems. Both pickups are designed for maximum impact and power. The neck pickup is fat, punchy and loud. The bridge pickup is tight, aggressive and louder. Both pickups have our patented dual-resonance configuration to reproduce more harmonic overtones than conventional humbuckers. Evolution pickups are not polite-sounding, and they're not for the inexperienced, but - if you've got the chops and a hot amp - your sound will burn. The Evolution pickups were originally designed with live gigs in mind, but they have so much presence and definition that they're great recording pickups, too; they slice right through even the densest mix.

Evolution Neck (neck)
Recommended For: The Evolution neck model will work in almost all solid-bodies and most semi-hollow bodies as well.

Tech Talk: Obviously, the Evolution was designed for Steve's Ibanez Jems, but it can add a lot of punch and definition to Les Pauls and similar set-neck guitars - even the lowest bass notes really jump out of the amp, and feedback occurs easily with a wide range of harmonic overtones.

Evolution V2 Middle (middle)
The DiMarzio ISCV2 single-coil pickup is specifically designed for use with DiMarzio Evolution Neck and Bridge models in a wiring configuration made popular by Steve Vai. When the 5-way switch is in the 1 or 5 position, you hear the neck or bridge humbucker. When played in the 2 or 4 position, the middle single-coil combines in parallel with one coil of either humbucker and produces a distinctive tone with hum cancellation. The middle (3) position gives a true single coil sound which is not hum canceling. A schematic of this wiring configuration is included with the ISCV2.

Evolution Bridge (bridge)
Recommended For: Bridge position in solid body guitars.

The Evolution bridge pickup works best for soloing where the sound must cut through. Low notes are very tight, and the highs have a lot of presence, enabling the pickup to be heard in almost any situation. Obviously, the Evolution was designed for Steve's Ibanez Jems, but it can add a lot of punch and definition to Les Pauls and similar set-neck guitars - even the lowest bass notes really jump out of the amp, and feedback occurs easily with a wide range of harmonic overtones.

Comments about DiMarzio Steve Vai Evolution Humbucker Set:

By 'Historically Important Pickups' I mean that Steve Vai and Dimarzio created a set of pickups that changed the face (sound) of shredding forever. I don't know of another pickup that's had such a huge impact on the type of music Vai and others play. It does beg the question though; what was Vai using before the Evos came along?

I installed my Evolution Set in an Ibanez S570, along with new pots, output jack, caps, wiring, shielding and a custom 5-way switch. They are set up so that in position 2, the neck rear coil and the middle pickup are in the loop. In position 4, the middle pickup and the front half of the bridge pickup are in the loop. I guess that's pretty standard for these pickups though. I used the Ibanez wiring diagram for a Steve Vai Jem, which I guess comes with the Evolution pickups.

The difference in volume (output) between the three pickups is pretty noticeable, but not necessarily a bad thing. The middle pickups is very clean sounding, which when you need clean, you got it. I'm not sure why, but I prefer the sound of the neck pickup over the bridge pickup, although the bottom end on the bridge is a bit fuller. The neck pickup distorts noticeably to hard playing/picking, which is something I'm still getting used to. When the gain is turned up high though, it all kind of blends together into that "For the Love of God" characteristic sound. Amazing.

I've only had these pickups installed for about two weeks now, and I learn something new about them almost daily. Tweaking the gain on my Fender amp, the tone controls (both amp and guitar) and picking technique have a significant impact on the tone these pickups produce. Sustain is remarkable and getting harmonics ALL OVER THE NECK is just amazing. I'm finding harmonics I never knew existed.

The build quality of these pickups is superb. I've been playing electric guitar since the mid 60s (yeah, I'm an old fart) and compared to everything else I've owned, Dimarzio truly has their QA down to a science. These pickups are worth WAY more than what I paid for them (got a 15% discount), which was a steal.

The Evolution pickups have inspired me to reinvent my playing. They really do demand a precise and articulate playing technique, just like Vai himself plays. When you play sloppy, the pickups throw it right back in your face. I find that to be a plus, because I ALWAYS try and improve my technique. These pickups made it EASY to identify where your playing needs improvement, and that's a plus to me.

If you have no desire to become a better guitar player, look elsewhere. If you WANT your playing to improve, if you want tone, harmonics and sustain just like the big kids, and IF you can stand having your messy playing technique pointed out to you (in spades), these are the pickups for you.

If you're like me, you'll look forward to tomorrow, because tomorrow is another day and you MIGHT just get a little better.

HIGHLY Recommended!

excellent sounding pickups

Comments about DiMarzio Steve Vai Evolution Humbucker Set:

I replaced a Seymour Duncan Jazz neck, an SD Alnico Pro II in the middle, and an Anderson H2+ in the bridge with this set and I'm very happy with the tone I have now. The bridge pickup has just the right EQ. It's very pleasant sounding. The neck pickup is just what I was looking for in a neck pickup. It has just the right amount of brightness and warmth and is very pleasant sounding. I split the humbuckers also and the split tones sound way better than what I was expecting. The 4 and 2 positions one the pickup switch sound good also. This a very good sounding humbucker set.

Comments about DiMarzio Steve Vai Evolution Humbucker Set:

I replaced the stock pickups on my Ibanez RG870 with the Evolution set, No regrets yet. Love the power and clarity with harmonics and pitches and it can really rock with the bridge pickup. Worth the investment. Can't wait to discover what else they can do.

Comments about DiMarzio Steve Vai Evolution Humbucker Set:

great pickups..but so are the IBZ''s
Bought these with the 10% discount about 153 all-in. I have played with these only 1 day and I can definitely hear an improvement over the v7 v8 s1 combination.. somewhat of an imbrovement over the dimarzio / ibz set.. seems a bit more balanced and fuller from low-e to high-e.. now to be honest if you have ibzs in your ibanez,, leave it alone.. unless you are in search of the perfect tone (these wont get you there.. unfortunately,,close..maybe) Except for a real lift in output over the ibz and slightly.. I am emphasizing this. There just isnt a real justification to swap em out .. however If you have the v7 v8 s1 setup... your world is gonna change with the evolutions in..totally different sound. Rate these an 8 only because ive had at least as good (better is subjective) sounding pickups at about 1/2 to 2/3rds the price. at the sale price these are still a good deal on some very nice pickups
and at least you dont have to go hunting.... by the way all the pickups I have mentioned were in a Ibanez prestige rg1570.
all dimarzio pickups are always first rate
name brand pickups are always way overpriced when compared the the chinese clones, copies, "modeled after" etc

Comments about DiMarzio Steve Vai Evolution Humbucker Set:

As with every guitar that I have ever owned (except one) I replace the stock pickups with better quality pickups immediately. These went in my Ibanez 30th Anniversary S-series guitar. The stock pickups were muddy and lacked focus. The Evolution set completely changed that. Not only do I have increased output but more clarity and punch.
As others have mentioned, the bridge pickup has more output than the other two in the set, but with that in mind it is not a problem. Found the 2 and 4 position on the selector to be least in output, but not a problem by any means...sound in those positions is still full and thick.
Rich, textural, and complex. Harmonics scream when they are pushed hard.
Just a little bit more noisy than I anticipated, but only under high-gain instances...which is where these pickups excel.
Others have mentioned that rolling the volume knob back doesn't allow the guitar to clean up...they must be using some serious gain. Did not find that to be a problem with these pickups.
Wondering if the Evolution 2 bridge pickup would be a better match for the neck and single-coil in this set?
Installed them myself in a matter of minutes.
Extremely happy with what these have done for the sound of my new guitar!

Comments about DiMarzio Steve Vai Evolution Humbucker Set:

The whole set is great, but the neck pickup is amazing! Loud an clear, not too treble-y but very balanced.

I bought this to install in a new RG 450 i recently acquired and they make it sound like the guitar version of a swiss army knife, so versatile...

Top choice for lead styles

Comments about DiMarzio Steve Vai Evolution Humbucker Set:

If you are looking for a hot, articulate, trebly pickup with the complex (vocal) Dimarzio tone, this is it. Most hot pickups start to sound compressed, but the Evos avoid that fate, can drive your amp hard and have a very complex sound.

The Evolution is the benchmark shredder's pickup, with strong mids and treble with tight bass. If you are into heavy styles and looking for huge wall of sound, this is not your pickup.

The Evolution Neck is the more remarkable pickup, IMO. For a 22 fret mahogonay body guitar, most neck pickups end up dark and bassy, but the Evo neck finds the sweet spot, with enough treble to really communicate, and just hot enough to solo well but also pull off more moderate styles.

The evo pickup set includes a reverse polarity single coil that lets you combine it in (noise-free) configuration with one of the coils from the neck or bridge humbucker. This gives a jangly, slashing rythym sound with is perfect for clean playing.

Its important to note that the reverse coil single coil is kinda a marketing gimmick. You can get no-noise 2 and 4 positions with a regular polarity sc, but you will have to activate the other coil (or flip the HB pickups in the cavity if you are getting noise) . The steve vai middle just lets you use the "other" coil.

The single coil itself cuts, and can solo, but I had to put it really close to the strings to balance with the other buckers. The neck bucker is farther away from the strings.

All around a great set for advanced players who like the Dimarzio tone.

Replaced the stock V series with thes in my RG-1570 however I find there isnt any real way to match correctly the bridge and neck pickup.. the bridge lust seems louder no matter how much height adjustment you alter... the single coil does sound like a strat however it is so underpowered compared the the neck and bridge you have to do a volume adjustment anytime you want to use it.. Not an workable option if your wireless and 40 ft away.

Being a huge vai fan, I've heard rumors that these pickups are amazing. I had heard audio clips, watched videos, even played a few jems to hear these bad boys. I got an ibanez rg and needed to get a new set of pickups. I took my rg450ex and these pickups. Wow. Absolutely amazing set of pickups. I played the opening melody to for the love of god and it sounded exactly like the song. If you get these you won't regret it. You can get steve's tone and even your own.

Comments about DiMarzio Steve Vai Evolution Humbucker Set:

These things do pack a punch. I was thinking about changing my strings, but I decided to go a few more weeks with these three-month old strings just because the new pickups make them sound new again. I can't wait to hear the difference when I muster the motivation to change my strings.

On a side note, installing them yourself is not that difficult. I find that wiring all the grounds together through a separate wire makes installing pickups so much easier and cosmetically appealing. I almost spent a hefty amount to have them installed at a local store, then watched a video and did it myself. Piece of cake if you have a soldering iron.

The pickups actually have more advanced electronics and wiring than the stock Ibanez/DiMarzio pickups included in many prestige guitars. It's one of those things where you can buy them once, and never worry about upgrading ever again. I think I'm going to settle on these for this guitar for life.
