Although the EMG-85 Humbucker has more measurable output than the 81, its frequency response and string interface are different. The 85 uses 2 Alnico magnet-loaded coils with a wide aperture to maintain a beefy low end and a fatter top end. Because of a more natural tone, it works great as a rhythm and blues pickup because it has loads of output but isn't muddy. It's a perfect choice as a rhythm pickup in combination with an 81 in the bridge.

The midrange has great definition and doesn't get foggy or muddy in the rhythm position. The EMG-85 guitar pickup works best if you like the natural distortion that comes from overdriving the front end of your amp. Under any condition, it responds accurately to your technique.

Better than the 81 for rhythm

Comments about EMG-85 Humbucking Active Guitar Pickup:

I gave almost the same review for the 81.I have a Les Paul Studio with an 81 in the bridge and an 85 in the neck. The 85 is everything I could possibly want in a pickup; low, crunchy, dark and HUGE!!! The 81 on the other hand is a pickup for the lead guitarist. It's trebly and thin sounding compared to the 85. I plan to switch positions on the two considering I'm a rhythm player and see how that works out.

the standard for active pick ups

Comments about EMG-85 Humbucking Active Guitar Pickup:

This pick up is the standard in metal but not reserved for metal alone. Great full tone, a ton of crunch and great harmonics. This pick up was championed but kerry king, james/kirk metallica, over-kill, exodus and countless others. This pick up is mainly for the neck/rhythym but works amazing in bridge too. Excellent tone and clarity but yet a bulldozer for crunch.

EMG 85

Comments about EMG-85 Humbucking Active Guitar Pickup:

I recently put a pair of EMG 85's in a guitar; the results could not have been better. In the neck it sounds great as most people know, but it sounds very good in the bridge as well. It provides a very accurate sound with very little muddiness to it and gives a guitarist a tone distinguishable from the EMG 81 in everyone else's guitars. I strongly recommend this pickup for both bridge and neck purposes.

Awesome neck pickup

Comments about EMG-85 Humbucking Active Guitar Pickup:

This pickup is so perfect. I stuck it in the neck of my Epi Les Paul standard, and I'm here to tell you that I don't need another guitar now. It sounds so great. It makes even notes on the high strings sound fat, and full. I feel like the sound surrounds me whenever I solo. And you can get awesome cleans with it! I was a little skeptical at first, but it is my favorite pickup, along with the 81. Get it, you won't be sorry.

Great sounding pickup!

Comments about EMG-85 Humbucking Active Guitar Pickup:

I own 2 Les Paul USA Customs and installed a pair of EMG 85's in the neck and bridge position. They produce a very warm sound with rich harmonics. I play with my les pauls using a JCM 800 and sounds incredible. Overall, a very versatile pickup!

Comments about EMG-85 Humbucking Active Guitar Pickup:

I have an Ibanez RG421EXFM and and Ibanez RG2EX1. In the RG421, I'm running an EMG 81 in the Bridge and an 85 in the neck. I wanna say that the 85 is now my first choice for neck pickups! It's as clean as the 81 and the harmonics are a cinch! It's perfect for the guy who wants to play fast but clean.

Comments about EMG-85 Humbucking Active Guitar Pickup:

I really like this pickup in the bridge position. I was using an 81 at the bridge for awhile but it just didn't have the low end that I liked. So I decided to switch them around and now I'm really happy with my sound. Plus it's more natural sounding that the 81. I have a peavey 5150. That in combonation with the emg 85 and tube screamer is one powerful sound. So give this pickup a try. I'm glad I did:)

Comments about EMG-85 Humbucking Active Guitar Pickup:

There is a reason that the best players choose EMG's, they sound amazing. I have had various models now for years. This is simply the best money you will ever spend on your guitar and guitar rig, because they are more than just pickups, they are a tonal change that will seriously wake up your guitar rig. I have given them the best rating, because they deserve it.

GREAT PICKUP

By Power Mullet

Comments about EMG-85 Humbucking Active Guitar Pickup:

This pickup is great. I have a Dunlop Crybaby Wah, but it was more of a volume pedal than a wah. So I had to turn on some distortion right from the amp to cover up the low end, but once I turned the wah pedal off the amp distortion with another distortion pedal sounds bad. This pickup solved all my problems. The only trouble was that you cannot use one EMG and a stock pickup with the B.C. Rich Bronze Warlock guitar, because the pickup was not designed for the type of switch the guitar has. So this way it only uses the EMG, but it still sounds great without the stock pickup.

Awesome Pickup Overall

By ChernobylGuitarist

from Tannersville, PA

Comments about EMG-85 Humbucking Active Guitar Pickup:

I use this pickup in the bridge of my old Aria. I run just one humbucker. I use this pickup in my metal band and in the school jazz band. I must say in the metal band it performs above and beyond the call of duty. An awesome pickup. It also performs nice through clean in a jazz setting. The treble response is great, the only con is that soloing through clean sounds a little tinny, but that's just because it's in the bridge. I plan on getting S or SA pickups to fix it. Overall, this a fantastic pickup. Just expensive.

Comments about EMG-85 Humbucking Active Guitar Pickup:

Buy this. Completely worth the money. Sweet sound when used with a little chorus, or without...PLENTY of output. The only downside is tryin to get the battery to fit in the control cavity. Unless you have a seperate battery pod.

Comments about EMG-85 Humbucking Active Guitar Pickup:

I have the 85/81 in my Epi Paul Standard. I put the 85 in the bridge and the 81 in the neck its a little reversed. I really dig it that way theres so much chunk. With them installed that way it really lets the paul and Mesa Rect tone shine.

Comments about EMG-85 Humbucking Active Guitar Pickup:

Got these babies in my Schecter - excellent for distortion. You don't even need a pedal if you're happy with mid-level distortion (it doesn't get crunchy enough for heavy metal on its own) and loud as hell. Downside- tapping is near impossible, 'cause it picks up all the tiny vibrations in the strings you aren't playing.

Best pickup EMG makes for bridge position

Comments about EMG-85 Humbucking Active Guitar Pickup:

This pickup is sick for Metal playing. It has great definition and tightness but at the same time great thickness and harmonic richness. The thing has plenty of output but isn't as stiff in its sound as the 81 (better clean tone too). For the neck position I prefer the 60 but the 85 kicks a in that position too. If you are going to buy EMGs the 85/60 combo is head and shoulders better than the others. I am extremely happy with my tone when I have this pickup in the bridge positon. Buy this pickup if you play metal. Period.

Comments about EMG-85 Humbucking Active Guitar Pickup:

I got the usual 81/85 like most people in my epi les paul... i really dont like this pick,,, harmonics are so bad,, muddy sounding actually. like if i do a pinch harm. on the 81 and switch to the 85 while still holding out,,, you can see its horbile!! If you try to bust out in any solos it just seems like it cant "keep up". It does have a warm thick sound to it with slow not changes... Lets get to rythem,,,, its OK but it seems like a reg old pick up that might come in a 300 dollar guitar!! again when just playing bar chords it seems like it just cant keep up.... this is though a more of a rythem pickup,,, but i think im going to swap this one out for the emg-60... when you get a set of emg one is a rythem one is a lead.. this pick tried to warp them together and it didnt turn out so good... so what i recommend is get the 81 for lead because it is the best pickup ever,,, then get the emg-60 then you will have it done up right...put emg-60 in neckput emg-81 in bridge
