A responsive active pickup that achieves exceptionally smooth, soulful tones in a variety of beautiful finishes.
The 85 is one of EMG's first pickups and is the slightly more sophisticated and well rounded half of its famous twin, the 81. Featuring close aperture coils loaded with Alnico V magnets, the 85 is a powerful pickup with exceptional organic tone and versatility. Most often used in the rhythm position, the alnico magnets of this model provide a muscular growl and smooth lead tones to enable you to play the muddiest of blues to the most extreme metal. Try it in the bridge position for exceptional smoothness and soul. This pickup pairs well with just about every other humbucker in EMG's line.

Comments about MetalWorks EMG-85 Humbucking Active Pickup:
I bought a pair of these to replace the 81/60 that came in my ESP LTD FX 360. I'd played around with the 81/61 combo a bit, and even tried the 60 in the bridge for a bit. I decided I wanted to go with the 85 based on a couple of forum posts about using a pair of them rather than the traditional 81/85 or 81/60 combinations. I chose the metalworks because I wanted to match the metal finish that ESP but onto their hardware, and the matching finish looks excellent.
My only problem with this pickup (which is the same problem I have had with the SD Invader and with the 81/60) is how much output it has. I play a lot of metal tunes, and really like the output for that purpose, but there really isn't much versatility to this pickup in the bridge position. It will rip yhour face off, and that's really its only trick. Nothing wrong with that, but I think I'll have to look into another rig with something cooler to jam out to ZZ Top and Cream.
At the end of the day, excellent pickups that look excellent and do their job. Love em.
