One year warranty

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man 4980 Hardshell Case for StingRay 4 or 5-String Bass:

Should last more than a year.
After the one year warranty ran out the ends of the case bowed upwards removing any airtight seal to protect the instrument. SKB manufactures this case and provides a lifetime warranty, however, their cases sold through Ernie Ball-Musicman are only warranteed one year. So good luck with that.
Should last more than a year.

I Like it for my Sterling 34ca

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man 4980 Hardshell Case for StingRay 4 or 5-String Bass:

This is the only case that fit my Sterling by musicman. It has a couple different cut outs incorporated into one. I really wish musicman would just say this bass fits this this case and be done with it. But, I'm feeling lucky that I only had one return before I got this one. And hats off to MF for the sympathetic price match and return shipping.

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man 4980 Hardshell Case for StingRay 4 or 5-String Bass:

First of all, everything fits and the metal latches are good and strong. It's a nice looking case, too... it says "Music Man" in big letters on the outside. The interior is nice and there's no spilled glue or funny smells.

The exterior is a different story. There's two "ridges" that run along the perimeter; the case is meant to rest on these two ridges when you set it down on it's edge. Other cases might have feet, or some other design. The problem is, the ridges on this case are spaced too closely together... it makes it very "rickety," and prone to tipping over. The empty case felt like it would fall down if you blew on it. After putting a bass guitar inside, it adds some weight and the problem isn't as noticeable. But it's still there to some extent.

The ABS plastic case that came with my Fender Stratocaster has the same ridge design, but they're spaced further apart and the case is heavier, so it doesn't have this problem. This Music Man case is light, and the plastic is pretty thin But it's good for storage, and that's what I'm using it for. I wouldn't recommend it for gigging or heavy road use. For the price, it's not a bad deal.

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man 4980 Hardshell Case for StingRay 4 or 5-String Bass:

Not a terrible case but not great either.
My biggest concern is that the hinges seem pretty flimsy. I'll be being very very careful when closing the lid on this and latching the latches because the weak hinges have enough play in them that it seems the lid could eventually get off center and end up like one of those old Ovation cases that have a "sprung" lid, no longer able to close fully or correctly.

There's also not nearly as much storage space as in an original pre EB Hard shell case but that's obvious from the pictures. I suspect there might be better protection from the form fitting design, so that is a plus.

If I were still gigging I'd have gone for the best SKB case available but since this is now just for home storage I couldn't justify the extra cost for a case that I suspect is way way better.

I did see an other review that mentioned the misalignment or the aluminum seam where the lid and bottom meet. I can see how this could easily happen with only normal usasage in a short period of time.

If you buy it be careful when closing the lid and make sure it is in the correct closed position before latching the latches.

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man 4980 Hardshell Case for StingRay 4 or 5-String Bass:

This is the current standard bass case provided for Stingray basses by Ernie Ball Music Man, and fits 4- and 5-string Stingrays, both left- and right-handed. It is about 3 inches longer than the cases originally supplied with 4-string Stingrays in the 90s, probably in order to accommodate the 5-stringers, and is also 3 inches longer than my Rickenbacker 4003 and Carvin LB75 cases. The handle is well-positioned to balance the case when being carried. The internal compartment holds the bass snugly, and has nylon fabric reinforcement for the four external metal hinges (which is where my previous case failed). The internal accessory compartments are shorter than the older cases by at least an inch, so thick/inflexible leather straps (like mine) may not fit the way they used to in an older-style case. However, it's a high quality case, sturdy enough for daily use if you're not throwing the case around with no regard for instrument safety, and with appropriate care should last long enough for you not to need the top-of-the-line SKB 3i-series case.
