I used to use nylon-wound bass strings back in the day (in the 1960s, on a Vox Phantom IV) and I loved them, even though the wrapping took a beating when I played with a pick (probably wasn't that wise to use coins as picks, but . . . ). These Fender nylon-wrapped strings feel more tightly wound and better made than those first gen strings.
These add a deep, thumpy tone reminiscent of an upright bass (perfect for R&B and jazz or those '60s rock sounds of the early Stones). But they're also quite versatile. I put them on my Fender Geddy Lee Jazz Bass and these transformed the sound. I couldn't be happier (and the black wrapping goes so nicely with the Geddy's black-and-white color scheme.
The steel core gives them a slight latent ring. The nylon wrapping is a bit slick, so they're also fast. Not for everyone, but if you're looking to break away from the bright, edgy sound characteristic of roundwound strings, then give these a try. I'll have to see how long they last.
The Fender strings cost less than half the price of similar La Bellas.

These are unique. They're exceptional for jazz, fair / good for slap bass, and compatible with whatever else.
Thanks!
I bought these strings because I wanted something smoother / faster. Also, I felt like they'd motivate me to focus more on jazz music (as it takes up a large portion of my music education major).

I opened the box and to my suprise, they're solid black! I hadn't done my research!
All is well though, they're consistent with my Epiphone Les Paul bass' color scheme (cherry w/ black hardware).
These strings carry little to no restrictions. They're considerably smoother than roundwound strings, making walking bass less strenuous. As most people have said, the brightness of your tone may lessen, but that's sort of what I was going for. They also bend rather effortlessly, I feel like it's been much easier to express myself with these strings, and I believe that says it all
I see no flaws in the construction of these things, I'm curious to see how long they'll last. Regardless, I'll likely use them again.

I put tapewounds on all my basses. The Fenders are not the best but they're the best priced.
I like a good deep tone the way a bass should be.

        • If you want more feel from your bass

Comments about Fender 9120 Nylon Tapewound Bass Strings:

These are my first tapewounds. I wanted a more round, woody tone like Paul McCartney and other 60's 70's bass players. I had also been developing my technique and felt that the rounds weren't working for me anymore. I haven't compared them to other brands, but I am very happy with these strings. They are so comfortable and enable me to get the sounds from the bass I was looking for. I think they are good for anything really. They are more versatile than roundwounds.

        Negatives:

In my opinion they are not good for picking, so if you are a heavy picker you might not like these. I'm talking about heavy rock or something like metal where yo uare really working the strings with the pick to get that aggressive sound. These aren't made for that.

Buzz. This was an unexpected issue, but I have it figured out now. Basically when you touch regular strings you are grounding your electronics and eliminating buzz. With these you are touching nylon and will get whatever buzz your amp makes when you are not touching the strings. It's a minor issue, but I fixed it by wearing a grounding wrist strap for working on computers. I clip it to the bridge and no hum or buzz.

Comments about Fender 9120 Nylon Tapewound Bass Strings:

I wanted to try tapewounds as I was going for a McCartney-ish 60s-70s tone on my P-Bass. These are really nice. Smooth and easy on the fingers. Almost feels fretless. I would say they sound like a broken in set of roundwounds with a touch of flatwound tone. They also bend and slide nicely. It makes you want to play solos above the 12th fret.

My only complaint, and it's not a defect in the strings in any way, is that you are not grounded. It's something I didn't think about. When you play regular strings you are grounding the bass by touching them. On the tapewound you are insulated from the metal, so if your bass has any buzz when you arent touching the strings, that buzz will still be there when you play with tapewounds.
