I used to use nylon-wound bass strings back in the day (in the 1960s, on a Vox Phantom IV) and I loved them, even though the wrapping took a beating when I played with a pick (probably wasn't that wise to use coins as picks, but . . . ). These Fender nylon-wrapped strings feel more tightly wound and better made than those first gen strings.
These add a deep, thumpy tone reminiscent of an upright bass (perfect for R&B and jazz or those '60s rock sounds of the early Stones). But they're also quite versatile. I put them on my Fender Geddy Lee Jazz Bass and these transformed the sound. I couldn't be happier (and the black wrapping goes so nicely with the Geddy's black-and-white color scheme.
The steel core gives them a slight latent ring. The nylon wrapping is a bit slick, so they're also fast. Not for everyone, but if you're looking to break away from the bright, edgy sound characteristic of roundwound strings, then give these a try. I'll have to see how long they last.
The Fender strings cost less than half the price of similar La Bellas.

These are unique. They're exceptional for jazz, fair / good for slap bass, and compatible with whatever else.
Thanks!
I bought these strings because I wanted something smoother / faster. Also, I felt like they'd motivate me to focus more on jazz music (as it takes up a large portion of my music education major).

I opened the box and to my suprise, they're solid black! I hadn't done my research!
All is well though, they're consistent with my Epiphone Les Paul bass' color scheme (cherry w/ black hardware).
These strings carry little to no restrictions. They're considerably smoother than roundwound strings, making walking bass less strenuous. As most people have said, the brightness of your tone may lessen, but that's sort of what I was going for. They also bend rather effortlessly, I feel like it's been much easier to express myself with these strings, and I believe that says it all
I see no flaws in the construction of these things, I'm curious to see how long they'll last. Regardless, I'll likely use them again.

Smooth, jazzy, comfortable and still good for rock too.

Comments about Fender 9120 Nylon Tapewound Bass Strings:

I wanted to try tapewounds as I was going for a McCartney-ish 60s-70s tone on my P-Bass. These are really nice. Smooth and easy on the fingers. Almost feels fretless. I would say they sound like a broken in set of roundwounds with a touch of flatwound tone. They also bend and slide nicely. It makes you want to play solos above the 12th fret.

My only complaint, and it's not a defect in the strings in any way, is that you are not grounded. It's something I didn't think about. When you play regular strings you are grounding the bass by touching them. On the tapewound you are insulated from the metal, so if your bass has any buzz when you arent touching the strings, that buzz will still be there when you play with tapewounds.

I have played bass for 47 years and have used everything from rounds to flats and everything in between. I have never played on strings such as these. The tone and feel are wonderful.I havent tried any other tapewounds than Fender, but if they are all like these, I'll be changing the strings on all 6 of my basses soon!
