MusiciansFriend had a great sale on these G&G cases and I was really excited when I received my order. However, the case turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. Don't get me wrong, it's still a beautiful, sturdy and protective case. But as a couple of other reviewers have noted, attention to detail - the hallmark of a great manufacturing company, American or otherwise - is just not there.

First, and immediately most noticeable, the case is bigger. I know this because I own an immaculate 2004 tweed G&G case. This new case, a brown tolex model, is almost a half inch thicker. Consequently, it is also slightly heavier.

Second, the lock and clasp fittings look like cheap imitations compared to the 2004 case. On closer inspection, the locks on the 2004 model have "Cheney England" marks inside. The new ones are unmarked. I've since found that Cheney Locks of England no longer exists.

Third, and most troubling, is the sloppy detail work. Mine is not as bad as a few reviewers here have described, but still does not bear close inspection. This is a sad development for an iconic American manufacturer much loved and a big part of Fender's history making legacy.

I would still recommend these G&G cases over the Vietnam made cases that Fender sells under its Pro Series line. But only at the sale prices that MusiciansFriend has made them available.

G&G Fender Cases - Ghosts of Quality Long Past

Maybe in its heyday these were THE cases to have. I bought one of their nice looking Fender branded tweed cases to protect a nice Strat I am lucky to own, and was shocked at the poor workmanship (studs not hammered in all the way, crooked name plates, pieces bent out of shape, etc.,).
I contacted G&G via email to let them know of my concerns regarding the poor quality. (I offered them an "out" thinking perhaps my case had been assebled poorly by Fender as a partner.) I heard nothing from them for weeks. When they finally responded, their correspondence was NOT very well written, in terms of professionalism, tone of customer service, or grammar; I felt like I was getting mobile texts from a teenage girl.I was basically asked to prove and provide photographic evidence. I did so gladly.Without any apology, G&G offered to replace my case, but they insisted that I pay for boxing it up and shipping it across the country to them. These are quite large and heavy pieces and it's not worth my time and money, as a mere average consumer, to ship it at a cost much higher than what a large company can afford to do. I suspect that they know this very well. It's a shame really that a USA company is taking this approach to "quality control" and customer satisfaction. Cheaper foreign imports are unfortunately improving their quality (and customer relations) to the point where it's hard to argue "Buy USA," especially if the quality of product and sevice is as poor as I've experienced. I recently bought some imported German guitar strings and the owner himself corresponded with me when I had a few break on me - sending me replacements for free all the way from Europe. This classic company may not last much longer if this is the trend. Very sad.

Comments about Fender Strat/Tele Hardshell Case:

Fender Strat/Tele Hardshell Case Black Orange Plush Interior

      EXTERIOR:
Tolex covering has a nice, dark satin sheen, and is applied flawlessly. The hardware is well placed and lines up well. Suitcase type latches at each end snap shut with authority, and open quickly with spring assist. Center latch snaps closed with a nice, moderate spring tension.

Three closed face, self limiting hinges keep everything lined up, and the metal feet, (4 small on the bottom case half, and 4 larger size on the hinge edge), look and feel solid.

There is a tiny nick, appx. 1/16", in one of the padded ends, near the bottom of the case, as carried. The ends appear to be leather and an examination with a loop, at the imperfection, seem to bear this out. Handle is leather covered, briefcase style, and appears quite sturdy.

      INTERIOR:
Inside is nice and plush, with a color not as bright as pictured. G & G web site calls it "Brick, Poodle Plush". (I like it, goes well with my Tri-color Sunburst.) Padding appears more than adequate.

Accessory compartment is large enough to carry most anything you'll need, with a cover that fits nicely and has leather pull tab and separate leather snap tab. (Also just nice to HAVE a cover, as many new cases do not.) Oval, metal G&G logo looks good and is secured with two rivets.

      FIT and FUNCTION:
Brought this case for a new Strat build with a short, 24.75" Gibson scale instead of the standard 25.5". As expected, the case is a little longer than needed, and the interior looks to be just about .75" longer than the guitar. I think a standard scale guitar might fit a little tightly, but I don't have one handy to try.

Carry is nearly level, with a slight lift towards the neck end. (Carry will, of course, vary depending on the weight distribution of your ax.) Although the handle is not uncomfortable, I hope to never have to carry this case over a long distance, as it is a little on the heavy side, with a shipping weight over 20 pounds.

      The UNEXPECTD, UNWANTED EXTRA:
Looking at MF's web page, I believed I was ordering a case with a small Fender logo attached beneath the handle, which is exactly what I wanted. This is not what was shipped. My case has the large, metal Fender logo on the lower, right side of the top of the case, as is shipped with a premium Fender instrument. A close look at the web page revealed that the picture was carefully altered to REMOVE the large logo! I don't understand why they would do this, as it is quite MISLEADING. I really didn't want a billboard that shouted, "EXPENSIVE GUITAR INSIDE!!!", but I suppose if was REALLY that concerned, I would not have bought a G&G case in the first place.

      CONCLUSION:
Nice case, good construction. Not quite as heavy duty as past iterations, but certainly not flimsy, and in many ways, reminiscent of old style Fender quality. Unexpected extra notwithstanding, I'm more than satisfied.

Comments about Fender Strat/Tele Hardshell Case:

Wanted a new case for a new Fender Statocaster. Looked at several different manufacturer's offerings. The Fender G&G Strat/Tele looked nicer and sturdier than all the others. When it arrived I was not disappointed at all. The tan tweed outside seems sturdy and has that classic vintage look. The red crushed velour interior is nothing short of luxurious plus it has a nice roomy storage pocket that snaps shut to secure straps, tremelo arms, and tuners. The handle is plastic but strong, and the locking hardware is made of quality materials. I wouldn't hesitate a second before buying another one of these if I purchased another nice strat down the road.

Comments about Fender Strat/Tele Hardshell Case:

I have been playing Fender guitars for over 50 years. I own a variety of different models, including Stratocasters, Telecasters, Jaguars, Jazzmasters, Precision Bass and Jazz Bass guitars. Even though, I have used other brands of guitar cases, I seem to come back to the G&G type of case, as it functions well for me. One of the features that I like the most is the secured, covered, storage compartment, which may or may not be included with other cases. It is the largest compartment in size, that I have found, and will hold most everything that one needs to travel with their guitar. Overall quality has been very good on every one of the cases that I have purchased from MF, over the past 15 or more years. I have probably written a review sometime in the past, but, consider this a more updated opinion. When on sale, it is difficult to find a better price for a fitted case.

Comments about Fender Strat/Tele Hardshell Case:

I have one of these cases that came with my Fender 1952 Reissue Telecaster. It's a great case: very well-made, stylish, great plush interior, holds the guitar securely, plenty of secure storage space, and of course the classic "Fender" logo on the outside. Just a great classic Fender case. Now for the unfortunate caveat: THIS CASE WILL NOT FIT THE NEW MICHAEL KELLY 1950s SERIES TELE GUITARS! The headstock on these guitars overhangs the edge of the case by at least a full inch. Too bad, since the body fits the case perfectly. You will need to buy a longer case, like one of the wooden, rectangular cases from Musician's Gear, etc. If you own one of the Michael Kelly Teles, measure its overall length (40 inches, which includes the butt strap pin), and speak to a representative BEFORE you order a case. And seriously, keep the Fender cases for the bona fide Fender axes...

I got the Black tolex/black plush. It's a really nice case for the money spent. I read these reviews and can not understand people complaining about the clasp is different, or it's a half inch thicker, or I don't like the color, whatever. I got mine on sale, it's great, I'm very happy.

Beautiful case, inside & out. Sturdy construction as one would expect from G&G (who manufactures Fender cases). Interior was actually a little brighter and closer to red than the pictures would have you believe, but it's still very pretty. Exterior of the case has the raised Fender chrome/plastic logo. That was a nice surprise.
