This "Modern Classic" features tonal characteristics similar to the '57 Classic with a slight increase in the upper mids, for a more contemporary humbucking sound. The special Alnico II magnet gives this beauty a singing quality that delivers on demand. The 490R (See recommended accessories box on this page), with its neck-spaced pole pieces, is calibrated to match the bridge-spaced 490T for a perfect match. Available with chrome, gold, or nickel covers, or with open coils, the 490R and 490T come with 4-conductor shielded wiring for series/parallel/split coil variations. NOTE: Factory-installed 490R and 490T pickups have 2-conductor wiring.

As with all reviews - do your research so you can separate the facts from the BS. These are NOT Alnico 5 - these are Alnico II. I own a '87 Les Paul Standard with the original 490R and 490T factory installed. The 490 is THE pickup that the Seymour Duncan Slash pickup attempts to emulate. They are not TOO hot, but hot enough to drive a tube amp nicely while retaining good tone and harmonics. The 490 pickups sound very close to the original PAFs that Gibson is famous for. Great picking dynamics - not squashed and compressed sounding like active EMGs. Bite into the string and it bites back! Another thing to keep in mind is the type of wood these are installed in. Gibson's primary tone wood is Mahogany - which is deep and full sounding with lots of sustain. So a bright pickup is needed to even out the tone. This pickup won't sound the same in an Alder bodied Fender as it will in a Mahogany bodied Gibson. Ash and Alder both have a brighter sound than Mahogany. Do your homework before choosing - and avoid an expensive mistake ........

When I first got my SG Standard, I was blown away by this guitar pickup. That was about 7 years ago. Now that I'm a seasoned player, my ears have grown tired of this pickup. I feel that it lacks clarity overall, and that there is too much bite, rolling off the tone knob just decreases the clarity and leaves you with a giant pile of lower midrange boom. I rarely go for my SG these days, as I don't feel like I am playing a legendary instrument. I ordered a different set of pickups from Gibson's line that was recommended from a very well respected friend. I look forward to breathing some life into my SG. I love the guitar, but with this pickup in the bridge, I just don't ever have a use for it's tonal characteristics.

                In a Lucille

Comments about Gibson 490T Original Humbucker:

I have this pickup in a Lucille in the treble position and play a wide range of music. I also own the 498T in a Paul and the 57 Classic. In all of these comments, no one mentions their rig setup. For example, if you use a British style speaker in your amp with aggressive high mids, you sound can be really gritty and harsh on distortion. I had this problem and replaced with a cleaner speaker with a fairly deep high mid notch and...like magic the tone became smooth and rich with still enough bite - really surprising. My point is you can't describe the tone of a pickup in isolation without considering your rig. That said, this pickup is terrific.

I bought a Les Paul Studio that came stock with this P.U. in the bridge position. It sounds okay, but not great (sometimes not even that good. It is not very warm and I get horrible feed back (shrill not warm and full). I just bought a classic 57 plus and hope it will warm up this guitar.

                Good for Bridge position!

Comments about Gibson 490T Original Humbucker:

Like I said in my other review for the 490R, it is a bad neck pickup, but a good treble (bridge) pickup. It is very bright and glassy, good for bridge position. I swapped my neck with a '57 Classic but left this in the Bridge because it's bridge tone cuts through my distortion and gives an incredible treble tone for rhythm and solos. I would still prefer a Burstbucker or '57 Classic Plus in the bridge but will accept this as my bridge pickup since it does what it needs to do and sounds like it should. It is a nice contrats to the '57 Classic I put in the neck.

This is an Alnico-5 magnet pickup, so if you want clarity and note definition for brilliant soloing, ala 80s metal--this is GREAT! I have it in a Scorpions Gibson FlyingV--perfect. Same for smooth, crisp rhythm playing. If you are looking for drop-tuning, or a Metallica 'black album' sound, pick a ceramic (hotter) magnet pickup like the 500T or go with EMG-81s.

I bought a Gibson SG Special Faded Worn Cherry and the guitar is great I haven't had any problems with it. Except the pick-ups are not that great. Anywhere I plug it I get massive hum and horriblesound quality. For the price you can save a little more and get something a lot better.

I've just bought a brand new Gibson SG Special Faded Worn Cherry and the 490T came with it... The guitar is awsome but the 490T sounds really bad. It just doesn't have the agressive sound I like when I play palm mute. Even my old 150$ Epiphone sounds better then my gibson! So I Think someting's wrong...
